B-W Upsets Otterbein 76-72, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door High School) scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds today as Baldwin-Wallace College upset Otterbein College, 76-72, in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the Rudolph Urspung Gymnasium in Berea.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets are now 13-12 overall and 9-9 in the OAC and clinched their 14th winning season in the last 15 years. With its loss, Otterbein ended a three-game winning streak and fell to 15-10 overall and 11-7 in the OAC.

In addition to Davis, B-W placed senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson H.S.) and senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/Midpark H.S.) in double figures with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Otterbein was led by junior forward Aaron Minister with a game and career-high 30 points. Freshman guard Joel Brockman also scored 11 points.

For McCormick, his 17 points now give him 1,857 in his career and move him into third place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. He is now 10 points shy of Kevin Braaten (1993-97) and second place.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 11 points at 16-5 with 14:12 left before the intermission when Davis canned a jumper. Otterbein then outscored B-W, 30-13, and led by six points at halftime, 35-29. In the second half, B-W regained the lead at 56-54 with 8:07 left when McCormick made a jumper. The Yellow Jackets then led by as many as nine points at 72-63 with 2:54 left when Davis made a foul shot.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, February 26, when it opens OAC Tournament play against Mount Union College in Alliance at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to rebound from its loss to John Carroll and get back on the winning track when they host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College on Saturday in Berea
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-12 record overall and 8-9 OAC record following their 98-80 loss against first place John Carroll University on Wednesday in Berea.  The loss was B-W’s third straight.
        Otterbein enters this game with a 15-9 overall and 11-6 OAC record following its 76-73 win at Wilmington College on Thursday.  The Cardinals have won three straight and four of their last five contests.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Otterbein All-Time Series -- This is the 79th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and Otterbein College.  The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 45-34, winning the last game in Westerville, 70-56, on December 7, 2002.  Overall, Otterbein has won four straight games versus the Yellow Jackets.  B-W's last win versus the Cardinals came in Berea, 80-75, on December 6, 2000.

In the Last Meeting on December 7th, 2002 in Westerville  --  Otterbein-- 70,  Baldwin-Wallace-- 56-- In the last meeting between the Yellow Jackets and the Cardinals on December 7, 2002, in Westerville, Otterbein defeated B-W, 70-56.  Despite the loss, B-W was led by sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door)with a game-high 15 points.  Davis also had eight rebounds.  Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Eric Reminder (Brunsiwck) chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. The Cardinals were led by sophomore forward Scott Hadley who had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Sophomore point guard Tony Borghese also had a great game with 17 points and seven assists.  Also contributing in the win was junior gaurd Kyle Walton with 10 points and four assists.

Off the bench, look for veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson to play 6'3" sophomore forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian), 6'0" freshman guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn), 6'0" freshman guard Greg Williams (Euclid), 6’5” sophomore post player Mike Brosovich (Rome/ Grand Valley) and 6'6" freshman forward Mark Belkofer (Millbury/ Genoa).

In B-W's Last Game on Saturday, February 19, 2003 versus John Carroll in Berea, Ohio:  John Carroll --  98,  Baldwin-Wallace --  80--  The Yellow Jackets dropped their third straight game and fell to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the OAC when it lost to John Carroll University, 98-80, in Berea at the Urspring Gymnasium.  Despite the loss, B-W was led by Thad Davis’ 19 points and Shawn McCormick added 18 points, including going eight-for-eight from the free throw line.  Leading the way for John Carroll was David Gibbons with 20 points.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders --  After 24 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 20.2 points per game and is third on the team in rebounding at 4.7 rebounds per game.  He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 86.2 percent (81of 94 attempts) and tied for first with 43 steals.  Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.8 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 rpg and 37 blocked shots.  Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. and is second on the team with 105 assists.Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.6 ppg. and leads the team with 106 assists and is third in steals with 34.  Eric Reminder is fifth in scoring at 7.7 ppg. and is second with 4.8 rpg.  He is shooting 54.7 percent from the field (70 of 128). Keith Aufmuth is the top scorer off the bench and is averaging 3.9 ppg.

Scouting the Cardinals--  Look for Otterbein Head Coach Dick Reynolds to play his usual starters.  Reynolds will probably start  5'11" sophomore guard Tony Borghese, 6'5" junior forward Aaron Minister, 6'7" junior  forward Phil Susi, 6'5" junior forward Mo Ross and 6'5" sophomore forward Scott Hadley.  Off the bench, look for Otterbein to play 6'2" junior guard Kyle Walton and 6'7" freshman center Tyler Ousley as well as a number of others.

In OC's Last Game on Thursday February 20th, 2003 versus Wilmington in Wilmington:  Otterbein --  76,   Wilmington -- 73--  The Cardinals inproved to 15-9 overall and 11-6 in the OAC with a 76-73 win against the Quakers of Wilmington College on Thursday in Wilmington at the Fred Raizk Arena.  In victory,Otterbein was led by Aaron Minster with a career-high 28 points and eight rebounds and Mo Ross scored 26 points, grabbed eight rebounds and canned five three-pointers.

The Cardinals Statistical Leaders --   After 29 games, Otterbein is led in scoring by Tony Borghese with 15.0 points per game and a team-leading 88 assists.  He is also second with 26 three-pointers and shoots 80 percent from the foul line.  Scott Hadley is second on the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg. and leads the team with 6.5 rpg.  He also has a team-leading 30 steals and has canned 16 treys.  Aaron Minister is third on the team in scoring at 12.6 ppg., grabs 6.0 rpg. and cans 56.9 percent of his field goals.  Mo Ross is fourth in scoring at 11.7 ppg., grabs 4.7 rpg. and has made a team-leading 33 treys.  Phil Susi is fifth at 9.0 ppg. and grabs 5.7 rpg.  Kyle Walton is the top scorer off the bench at 5.5 ppg. and Tyler Ousley scores 2.6 ppg. and grabs 2.9 rpg.

McCormick is Tied for Third All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 18 points in a 98-80 loss on Wednesday versus  John Carroll and is now tied for third on the all-time scoring list with 1,840 points.   The top three all-time leading scorers are Dean Martin (1969-73) with 2,062 points, Kevin Braaten (1993-97) with 1,867 points and Bob Walters (1959-63) with 1,840 points.

Carroll is 25th Now --  Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) is now 25th on the all-time scoring list with 1,069 points.  With his eight-point effort on Wednesday versus JCU.

Davis Coming Up Big--  During that last six game span, Davis has scored 115 points for a 19.2 scoring average, grabbed 70 rebounds for 11.7 rpg. and blocked 12 shots for 2.0 bpg.  Davis has canned 37 of 62 field goal attempts for 59.7 percent and 41 of 57 foul shots for 72.0 percent.  He had a five-game double-double streak snapped on Wednesday versus JCU.

Bankson at 607 -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson has 607 career wins and is B-W’s winningest all-time men’s basketball coach with 326 wins.
