BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Tom Luther scored a game-high 30 points and sophomore guard Chris Washington added 17, including three clutch free throws in the final 39.6 seconds as host Mt. St. Joseph College captured its own Franklin Savings Tournament title over Baldwin-Wallace College, 74-71.
B-W led in the second half by as many as 12 points at 61-49 with 8:02 remaining in the game before MSJ outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-7 to take its first lead of the half at 69-68 with 1:15 remaining when guard Phil Sweet scored on a layup. After a Luther layup extended the lead to 71-68, Washington canned his foul shots.
With the win, MSJ improved to 2-0 as B-W fell to 1-1. In addition to Luther and Washington, MSJ received 14 points from sophomore guard Mike Mahon, including four three-pointers.
Despite its loss, B-W was led by sophomore forward Thad Davis' (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) team-high 21 points. He was joined in double figures by senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson High School) with 16 points and senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark H.S.) with 12.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets stormed to a 17-4 lead in the first 5:33 of the game, including 10 points by sophomore forward Thad Davis. But then Mt. St. Joseph went on a 16-0 run, including three three-pointers by guard Mike Mahon, to lead 20-17 at the 11:18 mark. Then the Yellow Jackets outscored MSJ, 19-9, and led at halftime, 36-29.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next Saturday, November 30 when they travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania to play Thiel (Pa.) College at 7:00 p.m.
