The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to have it its 14th straight season with a .500 or better record in 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets open the campaign by facing a solid Moravian College of Pennsylvania in its opener. The Yellow Jackets return six lettermen and three starters from last year's team. Goals for the team this year include winning an Ohio Athletic Conference title and a return to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
At the annual OAC Media Day on November 8, B-W was picked to finish in sixth place by the media and fifth place by the conference's coaches. The Yellow Jackets finished 17-8 overall and tied for second place in the OAC with a 12-6 mark.
Moravian enters the season returning three starters and eight lettermen. The Greyhounds graduated two key starters last year, including their leading scorer David Jordan (16.1 points per game).
The Baldwin-Wallace College Versus Moravian All-Time Series Notes -- This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
A 13-Year Yellow Jacket Seasonal Streak -- For the last 13 years, the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team has finished with a .500 or better record every season, including 11 winning seasons in those 13 years. The streak is longest in school history. In the 13 years, B-W has won 207 games overall, the third most of any OAC school during that span and has made three NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances in the last eight years.
Notes on the B-W Starters -- In the backcourt, senior All-OAC point guard Jason Schefft (Mentor H.S.) returns to the point guard position after missing the entire season last year following knee surgery. Junior Jon Carroll (Berea/Midpark H.S.) will start at the other guard position. Carroll averaged 10.2 points per game and scored a career-high 25 points against Heidelberg last year. On the wing, All-OAC performer, Shawn McCormick (Massillon/Jackson H.S.) will help the Yellow Jackets back to another winning season. McCormick, the leading scorer for B-W the last two seasons, averaged 17.0 ppg. a year ago. Junior Craig Budziak (Mentor H.S.) will start at the other wing position. Budziak averaged 3.8 points per game coming off the bench, and had a game high 16 points against Wilmington last year. On the inside, John Telloni (Massilion/Jackson H.S.) will look to control the paint this year. Telloni only played in six games last year, only grabbing one rebound.
B-W's Top Reserves Off The Bench -- Off the bench, the top players are Manzie Williams (Olmsted Falls H.S.), who had nine three-pointers and 17 rebounds. Williams shot 85.7% behind the line last year. Eric Reminder (Brunswick H.S.), and Jeff Lombardo (Brookpark/Midpark H.S.). Mike Malloy (Erie/Cathedral Prep H.S.) and Will Pearson (Missouri City, Texas/John Foster Dulles H.S.) will also see action for B-W.
The Moravian Preview and Probable Starters -- Look for 22nd-year Head Coach Jim Walker to start sophomore guards Lucas Malischak (5.2 ppg. and 33 steals last season) and Steve Weiler (.450 3-pt% last season) along with junior swingman Kevin Hall (11.8 ppg and 40 3-pointers in 2000-2001) in the backcourt. Up front, 6'5" junior forward Ken Greb and 6'3" senior post Mike Frew will start.
Off the bench, expect significant minutes from the guard trio of senior Doug Spadt, junior Willie Reynolds, and sophomore Kevin Wyers.
YELLOW JACKET CHATTER
Ohio Athletic Conference Media Day -- The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish sixth by the media and fifth by the OAC coaches at the annual Ohio Athletic Conference Basketball Media Day in Columbus on November 8. The coaches did not cast a first place vote for B-W and picked the Yellow Jackets to finish behind Capital, John Carroll, Mount Union, and preseason favorite Ohio Northern. B-W did not receive any first place votes among the 28 cast by the media who said the Yellow Jackets would finish sixth in the same order as above, except with Otterbein in fifth place.
Schefft Returns in 2001 -- Senior point guard Jason Schefft (Mentor H.S.) returns to the B-W starting lineup after missing last year following knee surgery. Schefft, a three-time All-OAC selection and two-time Academic All-OAC player, has 1222 career points which stands 14th place all-time. He needs only eight more points to move into 13th place.
"Big Mac" Attack -- Senior Shawn McCormick (Massillon/ Jackson H.S.) has made a major impact in his first two years as a Yellow Jacket. He led B-W in scoring as a freshman with 17.6 points per game and was second last season with 17.0 ppg. In his first 51 varsity games, McCormick has scored in double figures in 49 of them. In just two years at B-W, McCormick has twice earned All-OAC honors, was a member of the d3hoops.com website All-Freshman team two years ago and has 885 career points.
B-W Looking to Keep the Streak Alive and Stretch it to 14 -- The B-W men's baskletball program has an on-going streak of 13 straight seasons with a .500 or better record. The streak is the longest in school history. During the 13-year streak, the Yellow Jackets have compiled a 207-139 record and a .598 winning percentage. In 11 of the 13 seasons, Baldwin-Wallace has had a winning record of 181-113 forv a .616 winning percentage. "The Streak" is the longest in B-W men's basketball history.
Steve Bankson Approaching 600 Wins -- Veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson is approaching the 600-win plateau and enters the 2001-2002 campaign just 12 shy of the coveted mark. Bankson is the winningest coach in B-W basketball history and reached the 300-win mark at B-W a year ago.
