BEREA, OHIO -- Senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon/ Jackson H.S.) scored a game-high 20 points today as Baldwin-Wallace College beat Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 60-46, in men's basketball at the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord.

With its win, B-W improved to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the OAC. With its loss, Muskingum dropped to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the OAC.

In addition to McCormick, sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door H.S.) also scored 15 and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. Senior guard Justin Clifford was the only Muskingum player in double figures with 12 points.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as seven points at 16-9 with 7:12 left before the intermission when McCormick canned a jumper. B-W also led at halftime, 23-21. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 14 points on two separate occassions with the last one being the final score with 52.3 seconds left in the game when sophomore guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name H.S.) canned a pair of foul shots.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, February 5, when it hosts OAC rival Heidelberg College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes # 19 vs. Muskingum

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus station WBWC, 88.3 FM. will broadcast all Yellow Jacket home and away games in 2002-2003. Today's pregame show from New Concord will begin at 2:45 p.m. Senior David Droes (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) will call the play-by-play.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to rebound from Wednesday’s loss at Mt. Union when it travels to New Concord to play Muskingum in the Muskingum HPER Center.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-8 overall and 6-5 OAC record following their 72-71 loss at Mt. Union at the Timken Physical Education Center in Alliance. The loss ended a three-game Yellow Jacket winning streak.

Muskingum enters this game with a 9-9 overall and 5-6 OAC record following its 75-71 loss at second place John Carroll University on Wednesday in the DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights. The loss snapped Muskingum’s two game winning streak.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Muskingum All-Time Series --This is the 80th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and Muskingum College. The Fighting Muskies lead the all-time series, 47-32, but B-W has won the last seven meetings, including a 78-64 win on January 18 of this season. The last Muskingum victory came on January 8, 2000 when the Fighting Muskies prevailed in New Concord, 77-65.

In the Last Meeting on January 18, 2003 in Berea -- Baldwin-Wallace -- 78, Muskingum -- 64 -- The Yellow Jackets defeated Muskingum, 78-64, on January 18 of this season. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) who had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. McCormick also went five for five from the free throw line. Also, sophomore Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 20 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had nine points and led the team in assists with 10. The Fighting Muskies were led by senior forward Eric Sheck who had 12 points. Also contributing for the Muskies was freshman guard Zack Ross with 11 points.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- Look for Head Coach Steve Bankson to start the 6’4" three-time All-OAC McCormick at forward, 6’0" senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark), Thad Davis, Tom Harrington and 6'3" junior forward Eric Reminder (Brunswick). Off the bench, look for veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson to play 6'3" sophomore forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian), 6'0" freshman guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn), 6'0" freshman guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" freshman forward Mike Brosovich (Rome/ Orwell Grand Valley).

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 18 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.2 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 86.4 percent (57 of 66 attempts) and with a team-high 35 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 15.9 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 6.9 rpg and 25 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg. and leads the team with 83 assists. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.4 ppg. second in assists (75 ) and second in steals (30). Eric Reminder is fifth in scoring at 8.1 ppg. and third in rebounding with 4.9 rpg. Keith Aufmuth is the top scorer off the bench and is averaging 3.4 ppg and is shooting a team-leading 52.9 percent from "three-point land" (nine of 17).

Scouting the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum College-- Look for Head Coach Jim Burson to start 6’0" senior guard Kent Keitch, 6’0" senior guard Justin Clifford, 6’3" senior forward Eric Sheck, 6’6" freshman forward/center Jason Trout, and 6’2" freshman guard Matt Dansby . Off the bench, look for 6’3" sophomore forward Cliff Sprang, 6’3" freshman guard/forward Zach Ross, 6’9" senior center Dan Frantz, and 6’6" freshman forward/center Devin Barnhouse all to see action.

In Muskingum's Last Game on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 versus John Carroll in University Heights, Ohio: John Carroll -- 75, Muskingum -- 71-- The Fighting Muskies had their two-game winning streak snapped and they dropped to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the OAC when they lost, 75-71, to second place John Carroll University at the DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights on Wednesday. Despite the loss, Muskingum had four players in double figures, led by Kent Keitch’s 16 markers. In addition, Justin Clifford and Eric Sheck each had 15 points and Jason Trout had 10.

McCormick is Fourth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick 5-(Massillon Jackson) scored 19 points in a 72-71loss on Wednesday at Mt. Union and is fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,703 points. The top three all-time leading scorers are Dean Martin (1969-73) with 2,062 points, Kevin Braaten (1993-97) with 1,867 points and Bob Walters (1959-63) with 1,840 points.

Carroll is this Week’s OAC Player of the Week; He is Moving Toward the 1,000-Point Club -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) is this week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. He earned the honor for his efforts in wins last week at Heidelberg (67-57) and at home against Wilmington (100-75). Carroll enters today’s game with Muskingum with 991career points and needs nine more points to become the 27th player to join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club.

Bankson and Burson -- B-W Head Coach Steve Bankson and Muskingum Head Coach Dr. Jim Burson are the winningest coaches in each school’s history and have combined for 116 wins. Bankson has 605 and Burson is at 511.
