B-W Defeated by Cleveland Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 98-80, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore forward David Gibbons scored a game-high 20 points tonight as John Carroll University defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 98-80, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, JCU improves to 17-6 overall and 14-3 in the OAC remains in a first place tie with Capital University with one regular season game left.  Baldwin-Wallace lost for the third straight game and dropped to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the OAC and ends its regular season on Saturday at Otterbein College at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to Gibbons for JCU, guard Brian Ingelright had 13 points, including JCU's first 10 of the contest, and forward Andrew Salata added 11 markers.

The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door High School) with 19 points and senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson H.S.) had 18.  McCormick's 18 also gives him 1,840 in his career to tie Bob Walters (1959-63) for third on the all-time B-W scoring list and leaves him 27 shy of Kevin Braaten (1993-96) and second place.

JCU led by as many as 14 points in the first half at 53-39 when guard Matt Moran burried a three-pointer at the buzzer.  In the second half, JCU extended its lead to as many as 24 points at 95-71 with 1:30 remaining when Gibbons scored on a layup.

Following its game with Otterbein this Saturday, B-W will open OAC Tournament play next Wednesday as the number six seed and will play on the road against an opponent and at a site yet to be determined.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-11 overall and 8-8 OAC record following their 79-70 loss against first place Capital University last Saturday in Bexley. The loss was B-W’s second straight.

John Carroll enters this game tied for first place in the OAC with Capital and has a 16-6 overall and 13-3 OAC record following its 72-57 win at Ohio Northern University last Saturday in University Heights. JCU is 11-0 at home this year.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. John Carroll All-Time Series -- This is the 89th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 49-39, despite a 69-63 loss in the last game between the two schools on January 15, 2003 in University Heights. Overall, JCU has won four straight games versus the Yellow Jackets. B-W's last win versus JCU came in Berea, 72-71, on February 14, 2001.

Off the bench, look for veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson to play 6'3" sophomore forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian), 6'0" freshman guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn), 6'0" freshman guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" freshman forward Mark Belkofer (Millbury/ Genoa).

In B-W's Last Game on Saturday, February 15, 2003 versus Capital in Bexley Ohio: Capital-- 79, Baldwin-Wallace -- 70-- The Yellow Jackets dropped their second straight game and fell to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the OAC when it lost to first place Capital University, 79-70, in Bexley at the Capital Center. Despite the loss, B-W was led by Shawn McCormick’s 20 points and Thad Davis added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The 15-point and 11-rebound effort marked Davis’ fifth straight double-double performance.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 24 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 20.3 points per game and is tied for second on the team in rebounding at 4.8 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 84.9 percent (73of 86 attempts) and with 41 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.7 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 8.3 rpg and 37 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg. and leads the team with 102 assists.Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.7 ppg. and second in assists with 101 and third in steals with 34. Eric Reminder is fifth in scoring at 7.6 ppg. and is tied for second with 4.8 rebounds. He is shooting 54.0 percent from the field (67 of 124). Keith Aufmuth is the top scorer off the bench and is averaging 3.8 ppg.

Scouting the Blue Streaks-- Look for JCU Head Coach Mike Moran to play as many as 12 players and substitute five-at-a-time on occassion. Mrian will start 5’10" senior guard Jason Pecjak, 6’1" freshman guard Brian Ingleright and 6’5" sophomore guard Jerry Angel in the backcourt. Look for 6’5" junior forward Jon Franks and 6’7" junior Ryan Dolatowski to start in the front court. Off the bench, look for 6’4" junior guard David Gibbons, 6’1" junior guard Matt Moran, 6’7" sophomore forward Drew Salata, 6’2" sophomore guard Mike Grogan and 6’3" junior guard Anthony Hoehler all to see action.

In JCU's Last Game on Saturday, February 15, 2003 versus Ohio Northern in University Heights , Ohio: John Carroll -- 72, Ohio Northern-- 57-- The Blue Streaks inproved to 16-6 overall and 13-3 in the OAC with a 72-57 win against Ohio Northern University on Saturday in University Heights at the Don Shula Sports Center. In victory, JCU was led by Jason Pecjak with a game-high 17 points. He was joined in double figures by David Grogan with 14 points and Brian Ingleright with 11 points. The Polar Bears were led by Chad Bostleman with 15 points, including four three-pointers.

The Blue Streak Statistical Leaders -- After 22 games, John Carroll is led in scoring by David Gibbons with 12.1 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. He also tops the team with 43 steals and is third with 30 assists. Jerry Angel is second on the team in scoring at 9.5 ppg and leads the team with 28 three-pointers. Michael Grogan is third on the team in scoring at 8.4 ppg. He is second on the team with 43 assists and shoots a team-leading 85.5 percent from the free throw line (53 of 62). Jason Pecjak is fourth in scoring at 8.2 ppg. and tops the team with 73 assists. Brian Ingleright is fifth at 8.1 ppg. Matt Moran is tied for sixth in scoring and averages 6.7 ppg. and is third with 24 three-pointers. Ryan Dolatowski is tied with Moran, averaging 6.7 ppg., and is seond with 4.9 rpg. Andrew Salata scores 6.2 ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg. and shoots 57.6 percent (57 of 99) from the floor.

McCormick is Fourth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 20 points in a 79-70 loss on Saturday versus Capital and is still fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,822 points. The top three all-time leading scorers are Dean Martin (1969-73) with 2,062 points, Kevin Braaten (1993-97) with 1,867 points and Bob Walters (1959-63) with 1,840 points.

McCormick Was on TV-8 -- Last week, Shawn McCormick was featured on WJW TV-8 in an expose by veteran sportscaster Dan Coughlin. McCormick works a 40-hour-a-week job as a Loan Officer at Huntington Bank in downtown Berea, plays basketball for the Yellow Jackets and then is attends Master’s of Business Administration classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights. McCormick had a 3.75 grade average in his first MBA Semester.

Carroll is 25th Now -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) is now 25th on the all-time scoring list with 1,061 points. With his seven-point effort on Saturday at Capital, Carroll surpassed former teammates Kenn Kaminski (1987-91) and Joe Rinkes (1987-91) who had 1,059 and 1,057 career points, respectively.

Carroll is Featured on TV 19/43 -- Jon Carroll will be featured either on Tuesday or Wednesday Night on WOIO TV-19 and WUAB TV-43. Carroll, who currently serves as an intern with the Cleveland CAVS on game nights, was interviewed by David Rottman.

Davis’ Doubles -- In the past five games, sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) has recorded double figure scoring and rebounding games. During that span, Davis has scored 96 points for a 19.2 scoring average, grabbed 66 rebounds for 13.2 rpg. and blocked 12 shots for 2.4 bpg. Davis has canned 30 of 51 field goal attempts for 58.8 percent and 36 of 49 foul shots for 73.5 percent.

Looking to Begin a New Streak -- A win against JCU or Otterbein would secure a .500 or better season. Prior to its 7-19 record a year ago, B-W had 14 straight seasons with a .500 or better record.

Bankson at 607 -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson has 607 career wins and is B-W’s winningest all-time men’s basketball coach with 326 wins.
