BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 73-68, tonight at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. With the loss, B-W fell to 5-14 overall and 3-10 in the OAC. With the win, the 'Berg improves to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in the OAC.
The Yellow Jackets were led by junior point guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark High School) with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Joining Carroll in double figures were freshman forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian) with 15 points, junior forward Craig Budziak (Mentor H.S.) with 12 and senior All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson H.S.) with 11. Senior three-time All-OAC guard Jason Schefft (Mentor H.S.), freshman post Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and McCormick each grabbed seven rebounds.
Heidelberg was led by the tandem of post Lucas Messer and point guard Rudy Wolf as each scored a game-high 22 points. Messer also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets built its lead to as many as six points at 17-11 with 10:40 left when Budziak made a layup. Heidelberg then battled back to take a 25-24 lead with 6:30 left. The 'Berg led by as many as three points on four occassions with the last time being their 37-34 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets and Heidelberg battled back and forth over the first 10 minutes of the second half with neither team leading by more than two points. Heidelberg post Ryan Niemic made a layup with 6:13 left to give Heidelberg a 62-60 lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
B-W will next play on Saturday, February 2 when it travels to face OAC rival Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to bounce back after losing to OAC rival Wimington when it hosts Heidelberg in Berea. This is a key game for both B-W and Heidelberg in terms of positioning for the 2002 OAC Tournament (February 18-23).
B-W enters this game with a 5-13 overall and 3-9 OAC record following its 84-83 loss to Wilmington on Saturday afternoon in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won two of their last six games, including a 72-65 victory last Saturday against Muskingum College in New Concord.
Heidelberg enters the game 7-12 overall and 3-9 in OAC action The 'Berg last played on Saturday when it defeated Marietta 80-74 at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Versus Heidelberg College All-Time Series Notes -- This is the 88th meeting between OAC rivals Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 52-35. Heidelberg won the last matchup, 82-81, in Berea on December 19, 2001.
Notes on the B-W Starters -- In the backcourt, 6'0" senior three-time All-OAC guard Jason Schefft (Mentor) starts along with 6'0" junior Jon Carroll (Berea/Midpark). The forwards are 6'4" senior two-time All-OAC performer Shawn McCormick (Massillon/Jackson) and 6'3" wing Craig Budziak (Mentor). In the post is 6'3" freshman Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian). McCormick tops all scorers with 17.8 points per game and is also tops with 6.8 rebounds an outing. He also has a team-leading 33 steals. Davis is second in scoring (15.9 ppg.) and rebounding (6.7 rpg.) and has the most blocked shots with 31. Schefft is third in scoring at 13.8 ppg. Carroll rounds out the double figure scorers at 11.6 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 70 and three-pointers with 42. Budziak, who missed three games with an injury, averages 8.9 ppg. and 4.0 rpg.
B-W's Top Reserves Off The Bench -- Off the bench, the top players are 5'11" sophomore Manzie Williams (Olmsted Falls) and freshman John Maddox (Tallmadge) at the wing and freshman Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore Eric Reminder (Brunswick) in the post. Williams, scores 2.0 ppg. in 14 games. Maddox scores 3.7ppg, including a career-high nine points last Wednesday against Otterbein. Coffey, who started when Budziak was injured, scores 2.3 ppg. and grabs 2.3 rpg. Reminder has seen limited action.
The Heidelberg College Probable Starters -- The starters are listed in the box to the right. Look for Head Coach John Hill to start freshman Kyle Tackett at the point gaurd position (7.8 ppg), and seniors Rudy Wolf (7.6 ppg) and Ryan Niemic (10.0ppg) at the wing and post positions. In the post, sophomore Lucas Messer (18.1 ppg and 6.9 rebounds) and sophomore Kevin Slates (3.5ppg) round out the starting five.
Off the Heidelberg Bench -- Look for Hill to also play senior Paul Meyer (4.5points in 19 games) at the post and sophomore Nick Filipic (4.4 points in 19 games) at the guard positions. Lorenzo Smith will also see action off the 'Berg bench.
In B-W's Last Game on January 26, 2002 in Berea: Wilmington -- 84, Baldwin-Wallace -- 83 -- The Yellow Jackets lost to OAC rival Wilmington College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gym on Saturday afternoon, 84-83, to fall to 5-13 overall and 3-9 in the OAC. Despite the loss, Jason Schefft led the way for the Jackets with 19 points, nine boards and eight assists. Shawn McCormick also chipped in with 18 points and seven rebounds. Thad Davis poured in 10 points and grabbed 11 boards and Craig Budziak rounded out the B-W scoring with 12 points. Pat Cary led the way for the Quakers with 23 points.
In Heidelberg's Last Game on January 26, 2002 in Marietta: Marietta -- 74, Heidelberg-- 80 -- The 'Berg improved to 7-12 overall and 3-9 in the OAC with a 80-74 win over Marietta College at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse. In the win, the 'Berg were led by Lucas Messer with 21 points and Ryan Neimic with 18 points and six rebounds.
Earlier This Season, On December 19 in Berea: Heidelberg-- 82, Baldwin-Wallace -- 81 -- The Yellow Jackets lost earlier this season, December 19, 2001, to Heidelberg at Ursprung Gymnasium, 82-81. In that game, Jason Schefft led B-W with a game-high 25 points. Shawn McCormick also chipped in with 18 points and grabbed a 6 rebounds as well. Ryan Niemic led Heidelberg with 21 points.

Jason Schefft Stands Eighth All-Time -- With his 19 points against Wilmington, Jason Schefft now has 1,480 career points and stands eighth on the B-W all-time scoring list. Next up is Terry Allerton (1964-68), who is seventh with 1,499 points.
Shawn McCormick Moves into 15th Place All-Time -- With his 18 points against Wilmington, Shawn McCormick is now 15th on the career scoring list with 1,203 points. Next up from McCormick is Bob Scelza (1981-84) who had 1,229 career points.
B-W Leads the Nation (ALL DIVISIONS) in Foul Shooting -- B-W leads Division III in free throw shooting at 80.2 percent on 268 of 334 attempts . In addition, the starting five of Shawn McCormick (61 of 63 for 96.8 percent), Jason Schefft (41 of 51 for 80.4 %), Thad Davis (77 of 99 for 77.8%), Jon Carroll (25 of 31 for 80.6%) and Craig Budziak (32 of 39 for 82.1%), have canned a combined 236 of 283 free throws for an amazing 83.3%.
More Foul Shots, More McCormick -- Shawn McCormick is 61 of 63 at the line this year and has made 79 of his last 81 foul shots dating back to last year for 97.5 percent . McCormick ended a streak of 43 consecutive makes from the charity stripe earlier this year in B-W's Dec. 8 win against Muskingum.
Steve Bankson Approaching 600 Wins -- Veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson is approaching the 600-win plateau. He is currently seven wins shy of that coveted mark and has 593 career wins. Bankson is the winningest coach in B-W basketball history with 312 victories.
