B-W Men Fall to Capital, 79-70, in Bexley

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior guard Geron Tate scored a team-high 16 points as Capital University defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 79-70, at the Capital Center in Bexley.

With the win, Capital improved to 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the OAC. With its loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.

In addition to Tate, senior guard Tony Ruberg had 14 points and both sophomore forward Jake Beck and junior guard Mark Denner each chipped in with 12. Senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson High School) led B-W with 20 points and was joined in double figures by sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria Open Door H.S.) with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

For McCormick, he now has 1,822 career points and is 19 points shy of passing Bob Walters (1957-60) for third place on the all-time scoring list. The double-double by Davis was his fourth straight.

In the first half, Capital led by as many as 10 points at 29-19 with 4:28 left before the intermission when junior forward Chuck Bihn scored on a jumper. The Crusaders also led at halftime, 34-30. In the second half, Capital extended its lead to as many as 18 points at 75-57 with 2:37 left in the game when junior guard Adam Stolly canned a pair of foul shots.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, February 19, when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in Berea at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Bexley to play the Crusaders of Capital University at the Capital Center.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-10 overall and 8-7 OAC record following their 83-74 loss at Ohio Northern University in Ada last Wednesday.

Capital enters this game with a 17-5 overall and 12-3 OAC record following its 72-66 loss at Mount Union on Wednesday in Alliance. The Crusaders have also won 13 of their last 15 games.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Capital All-Time Series --This is the 78th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and Capital University. The Crusaders lead the all-time series, 41-34, including four straight. The Crusaders beat B-W on January 11 of this season in Berea, 71-59. B-W's last win versus Capital came in Berea, 72-63, on February 10, 2001.

In the Last Meeting on January 11, 2003 in Berea -- Capital -- 71, Baldwin-Wallace -- 59 -- The Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets earlier this season on January 11, 2003 when they beat B-W at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, 71-59. Capital was led by Adam Stolly’s team-high 18 points as the Crusaders canned seven three-pointers and forced B-W into 15 turnovers. Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) with 21 points and sophomore forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) with 11 points and six rebounds.

In B-W's Last Game on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 versus Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio: Ohio Northern -- 83, Baldwin-Wallace -- 74 -- The Yellow Jackets dropped to 12-10 overall and 8-7 in the OAC with an 83-74 loss against Ohio Northern University last Wednesday in Ada, Ohio. It was a game in which B-W scored 47 first half points and played its most dominating half of basketball all season. But ONU outscored B-W 62-37 over the final 27 minutes and made a school-record 17 three-pointers, including eight by Bostelman to win. The Yellow Jackets made 14 of their first 15 shots of the game, 18 of 21 and 21 of 28 in the first half for 75 percent. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Thad Davis scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Also, Shawn McCormick scored 22 points and Jon Carroll added 14. Bostelman led ONU with a career-high 33 points.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 22 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 20.3 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 4.9 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 86.1 percent (68 of 79 attempts) and is first with 41 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.7 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 8.2 rpg and 35 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.7 ppg. and leads the team with 100 assists and is tied for the team-lead with McCormick with 41 treys. He is second with 40 steals. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.8 ppg. second in assists (98) and three-pointers (39) and third in steals (34). He also shoots 50 percent from three-point range (39 of 78). Eric Reminder is fifth in scoring at 7.7 ppg. and third in rebounding with 4.8 rpg. Keith Aufmuth is the top scorer off the bench and is averaging 3.6 ppg and is shooting 47.8 percent from "three-point land" (11 of 23).

On the inside, look for 6’6" junior forward Chuck Bihn and 6’7" sophomore forward Jake Beck and 6’6" Tyler Schleich to start. Off the bench, look for 6’4" junior wing Mark Denner, 6’6" junior forward Tyler Alexander, 6’6" junior Chuck Bihn and 6’1" senior guard Drew Davie to all see action.

In Capital's Last Game on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 versus Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio: Mount Union -- 72, Capital -- 66-- The Crusaders dropped to 17-5 overall and 12-3 in the OAC with a 72-66 loss at Mount Union College in Alliance at the Timken Physical Education Building. It was a game that saw Capital Head Coach Damon Goodwin ejected with 11 seconds remaining. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Jake Beck led four Crusader scorers in double figures with 15 points.

The Crusaders Statistical Leaders -- After 22 games, Capital is led in scoring by Jake Beck at 12.1 ppg. He is also third with 5.0 rpg. and cans a team-leading 56.5 percent of his field goals (109 of 193). Tony Ruberg is second in scoring at 11.6 ppg. and has a team-leading 35 three-pointers. Geron Tate is third with 10.8 ppg., tied for first with 5.4 rpg. and tops the team with 71 assists and 40 steals. He has also gone to the foul line 128 times and made 98 for 76.6 percent. Adam Stolly rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.1 ppg. Tyler Schleich is scoring 7.9 ppg. and grabbing 4.7 rpg. Chuck Bihn tallies 7.2 ppg. and is tied for the rebounding lead at 5.4 rpg. Mark Denner scores 6.0 ppg. and is second with 28 treys. Tyler Alexander scores 4.6 ppg. and Drew Davie scores 1.4 ppg.

McCormick is Fourth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 22 points in an 83-74 loss on Wednesday versus Ohio Northern and is still fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,802 points. The top three all-time leading scorers are Dean Martin (1969-73) with 2,062 points, Kevin Braaten (1993-97) with 1,867 points and Bob Walters (1959-63) with 1,840 points.

Carroll Joins the 1,000-Point Club -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) became the 27th player to join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club last Wednesday when he scored 21 points versus Heidelberg. He had 14 points at ONU and enters tonight’s game with 1,054 career points.
