B-W Men Defeat Heidelberg, 67-57, in Tiffin; McCormick Moves to Fourth on B-W Scoring List

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson High School) scored a game-high 20 points tonight as Baldwin-Wallace College beat Ohio Athletic Conferenc rival Heidelberg College, 67-57, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was B-W's second straight.

With the win, B-W improved to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the OAC. With its loss, Heidelberg dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the OAC. It was also Heidelberg's ninth straight loss, including seven consecutive in OAC action.

In addition to McCormick, senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark H.S.) and freshman backup guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn H.S.) also scored in double figures for B-W with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Junior forward Lucas Messer and sophomore guard Lorenzo Smith led Heidelberg with 16 points each.

With his 20 points, McCormick now has 1,666 points and moved into fourth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. He passed Ted Johnson (1965-69) with his seventh point of the contest.

In the first half, Heidelberg led by as many as nine points at 21-12 with 12:48 left before the intermission before B-W went on a 21-9 run to lead 33-30 at halftime. McCormick led the Yellow Jacket run with nine of his 14 first half points. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 14 points at 58-44 with 1:36 left in the game when McCormick scored on a layup. The closest Heidelberg got was 46-42 with 6:00 left in the game, but Aufmuth scored eight of his 11 points and gave B-W a 54-42 lead.

B-W returns to action on Saturday, January 25, when it hosts OAC rival Wilmington College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game as it hosts Heidelberg in the final game of the first half of the OAC regular season. The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 8-7 overall and 4-4 OAC record following their 78-64 win against Muskingum College last Saturday at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win snapped a five-game losing streak. Heidelberg enters this game with a 4-11 overall and 1-7 OAC record following its 80-55 loss at Capital University on Saturday in Bexley. The loss was Heidelberg's eighth straight, including sixth consecutive in OAC play.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Heidelberg All-Time Series -- This is the 89th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 52-36, but Heidelberg won both meetings last year, 82-81 in Berea on December 19, 2001 and 73-68 in Tiffin on January 30, 2002. The last Yellow Jacket victory came on January 31, 2001 in Berea when B-W prevailed, 81-74.

In the Last Meeting on January 30, 2002 in Tiffin -- Heidelberg -- 73, Baldwin-Wallace -- 68 in Tiffin -- The Student Princes completed the season sweep of the Yellow Jackets with a 73-68 win in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. Despite the loss, B-W was led by current 6'0" senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) who scored a team-high 20 points. Joining him in double figures were current 6'4" sophomore power forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 15 points and 6'4" senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) with 11 markers. In B-W's Last Game on Saturday, January 18, 2003 versus Muskingum in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace-- 78, Muskingum -- 64-- The Yellow Jackets snapped their five-game losing streak with a 78-64 victory against Muskingum at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Leading the way for B-W was Shawn McCormick with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Thad Davis also added 20 points and five rebounds. Jon Carroll chipped in with 14 points and six assists. Tom Harrington scored nine points and dished out a career-high 10 assists. The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 15 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 20.1 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 87 percent (53 of 61 attempts) and with 29 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.5 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 7.1 rpg and 22 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. and leads the team with 61 assists. Eric Reminder is fourth in scoring at 7.8 ppg. and third in rebounding with 4.8 rpg. In Heidelberg's Last Game on Saturday, January 18, 2003 versus Capital in Bexley, Ohio: Capital -- 80, Heidelberg -- 55 -- The Student Princes lost their eighth straight game as they were beaten by first place Capital in Bexley, 80-55. Despite the loss, Lorenzo Smith and Lucas Messer topped Heidelberg in scoring with 14 points each and Nick Flipic added 10 points. A key in the loss was the fact that Heidelberg shot just 34 percent from the floor on 18 of 53 shots, including four of 19 from three-point range.

The Student Prince Statistical Leaders -- After 15 games, Heidelberg is led in scoring and rebounding by Lucas Messer with an OAC-leading 21.3 ppg. and 8.5 rpg. He also shoots 51.9 percent from the floor and better than 80 percent from the charity stripe and tops the squad with 12 blocked shots. He is joined in double figures by Lorenzo Smith at 12.2 ppg. and Nick Flipic at 10.5 ppg. Smith also tops the Student Princes in steals with 28 and three-pointers with 24 and is second in assists with 34. Adam Barger scores 3.6 ppg. and tops the team with 36 assists. Rudy Wolf is fourth in scoring at 6.8 ppg. Phiol McLaughlin is fifth at 4.6 ppg. and Kyle Tackett is sixth at 4.3 ppg.

The Yellow Jacket Notebook McCormick is Sixth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 22 points in a 78-64 win on Saturday against Muskingum and moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,646 points. Next up for McCormick is Ted Johnson (1965-69) who scored 1,652 points. The top three all-time leading scorers are Dean Martin (1969-73) with 2,062 points, Kevin Braaten (1993-97) with 1,867 points and Bob Walters (1959-63) with 1,840points.

Carroll Moving Toward 1,000-Point Club -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) enters tonight's game with Muskingum with 942 career points. Carroll needs 58 more points to become the 27th player to join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club.

Mentor Versus Pupil -- This will mark the first time that Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson (603 wins in 38 years) will face former Yellow Jacket player and Academic All-OAC player Duane Sheldon. Sheldon, who took over the head coaching duties at Heidelberg this fall, is 4-11 in his first season. He played his high school basketball at Strongsville High School, was a four-year standout player and student at B-W and graduated in 1993 and was an outstanding high school coach at local Midpark H.S. before taking over the reigns in Tiffin.
