BEREA, OHIO -- Junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds tonight (Wednesday, February 27, 2008) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 67-59, in a first round Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament game in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington. With its win, B-W advances to play Heidelberg College, a 104-74 winner against John Carroll University, in an OAC semifinal game at Capital University in Columbus on Friday (Feb. 29) at 6:00 p.m.
With its win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 12-14 overall and won their season-high fourth straight game. With its loss, Wilmington ends its season at 16-10 overall. The winner of the OAC tourney receives an automatic berth in the 2008 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
With the win, Baldwin-Wallace Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 701st career game and is now 701-441 in 44 years overall, including 420 victories in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson is the third winningest men’s basketball coach in OAC history.
In the first half, B-W opened with an 11-5 run at the 15:37 on a jump shot by sophomore forward Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior). Wilmington answered with 10-2 run to take a 15-13 lead at the 13:01 mark when sophomore guard Tyler Ledford made a three-pointer. B-W then went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with 8:11 left when senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) made a three-pointer. Wilmington then went on a 5-0 run to cut B-W's lead to 22-20 with 7:19 left when sophomore guard R.J. Brown madec a layup. B-W then went on a 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the the half of eight points at 28-20 at the 5:04 mark on a Bene hook shot. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 36-32.
In the second half, B-W opened with a 9-6 run to take a 45-38 lead at the 9:58 mark when Bene made one of two foul shots. Wilmington then went on a 4-0 run to get to within 45-42 with 8:53 left when junior forward Justin Gaines made a layup. That was as close as the Quakers would get the rest of the game. B-W then steadily built its lead to a game-high of 11 points at 65-54 with 1:01 seconds left when Tumblin made two foul shots.
In addition to Bene for B-W, Tumblin scored 20 points and sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) had 16. For the Quakers, R.J. Brown led the way with 12 points and senior guard Zach Broerman had 10.
The OAC Final Four on Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1 at the site of the highest remaining seeded team. Game times on Friday are at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., respectively, and the 2008 OAC Championship Game is on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The sixth-seeded BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference foe and third-seeded Wilmington College on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in Fred Raizk Arena at 7:30 p.m. This is the first-round of the OAC Tournament and the third meeting this season between B-W and Wilmington. The winner advances to the Final Four on Friday, Feb. 29 and Saturday, March 1. Wilmington was led by 6'3" junior guard Justin Gaines with 18 points and eight rebounds. In addition, Brandon Rogers scored 17 points and had seven rebounds. For B-W, 6'4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored 12 points and 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 10 points and six rebounds. The key to the Wilmington win was its three-point accuracy as the Quakers made 10-of-15 attempts compared to just two-of-15 for B-W.

B-W was led offensively by Andrew Bene with a team high 17 points. Also in double figures for the Yellow Jackets were Dennis Santiago and Kyle Brown with 14 points each and Jake Cayton with 10. Paul Glass led the team with seven rebounds. One of the keys to the victory was B-W's bench outscoring Marietta's, 41-17. B-W never trailed in the game..
Wilmington Information and Probable Starters -- Wilmington scores 70.7 ppg. and allows 67.2 ppg. for a plus 3.5 ppg. differential. The Quakers shoot 45.5 percent (653-of-1434) from the field, including 37% (160-of-433) from threepoint range and 72.9 % (302-of-414) from the free throw line. Wilmington grabs 32.8 rebounds per game and allows 33.5 to its opponents for a minus 0.7 differential.
Look for first year Head Coach K.C. Hunt to start Brandon Rogers and 6'4" senior Scott Walters in the post, 5'10" senior Zach Broermann, Justin Gaines and 6'5" senior Fred Harrison in the backcourt. Rogers leads the team in scoring with 13.8 ppg and rebounding with 6.3 rpg. He also has 26 three-pointers, 33 blocked shots and 20 steals. Gaines is second in scoring with 9.8 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg. and has 46 assists and 13 three-pointers. Harrison scores 8.0 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg. and leads the team in steals with 45 and is tied for the lead in blocks with 33. Broermann averages 7.6 ppg., grabs 1.4 rpg. and leads the team in three-pointers with 31 and assists with 60. Walters scores 7.3 ppg. and grabs 5.5 rpg. He also has 10 three-pointers, 38 assists and 30 steals.
Off the bench, look for 5'9" sophomore guard Tyler Ledford, 6'4" sophomore guard R.J. Brown, 6'3" senior guard Nick Berter, 6'4" freshman forward Mark Holt, 6'1" junior guard Kerry Wilkinson, and 6'5" freshman forward Justin Tillman to all possibly see action for Hunt's team. Brown is the leading scorer off the bench as he tallies 8.0 ppg. and grabs 3.0 rpg. Ledford scores 5.6 ppg. and has 12 three-pointers, 60 assists and 24 steals. Wilkinson scores 4.0 ppg. and has 21 three-pointers.

Brendan Schuler 19th All-Time in Scoring -- In Saturday's 86-60 win at Marietta, Brendan Schuler scored five points to give him 1,146 career points to move from 20th to 19th place in B-W Men's Basketball scoring history. He passed Ken Hemmerich (1958-1961) for 19th all-time, Schuler needs seven points to pass Dick Selgo (1947-1950) for 18th place. In addition, Schuler also stands third in career assists with 476 and seventh in three pointers with 181.
Steve Bankson Wins His 700th Career Game -- 44-year veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 700th career game on Saturday (Feb. 23, 2008) when B-W beat Marietta. Bankson has a 700-441 career mark that includes 28 years at B-W, 12 at Lorain (Ohio) County Community College and four at the high school level. He is 419-327 at B-W, was 232-90 at LCCC and 49-24 at the high school level.
Bankson Also is Third All-Time in OAC History in Wins -- Steve Bankson's 419 at B-W wins also ranks him third on the all-time OAC Coaching Win List. He also is first all-time at B-W. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
Dennis Santiago is an Academic All-OAC Candidate -- A year ago, Dennis Santiago earned Academic All-OAC accolades for his efforts on the basketball court. The political science major who carries a 3.27 grade average is a candidate again this season.
