Wilmington College Men Beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 70-60, in Wilmington

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Justin Gaines scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high-tying eight rebounds today (Saturday, February 9, 2008) as Wilmington College defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 70-60, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington..
 
With its win, the Quakers improved to 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 8-13 overall and 5-9 in the OAC and ended a three-game winning streak.
 
In the first half, Wilmington jumped out to an early 7-2 lead at the 15:25 mark when senior guard Fred Harrison connected on a jumper.  B-W took its only lead of the half at the 12:25 mark when junior post player Andrew Bene  (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) made one-of-two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets an 8-7 lead.  Wilmington then took over the half and extended its lead to as much as 16 points at with 16 seconds left when sophomore forward Brandon Rogers made a jumper.  Wilmington led at halftime advantage, 41-27.
 
In the second half, Gaines connected on a three-pointer at the 19:30 mark to extend the Quakers' lead to a game-high 17 points at 44-27 at the  19:23 mark.  The Yellow Jackets quickly answered back with a 8-3 run to cut the defecit to 47-37 at the 15:21 mark. The closest B-W would get the rest of the game was eight points on two seperate occasions, including a jumper by sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) at the 3:09 mark to make the score 61-53.      
 
In addition to Gaines for Wilmington, Rogers had 17 points andseven rebounds. For B-W, Brown led the way with 12 points and Bene had  10 points and six rebounds.
 
B-W will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio and play OAC rival Otterbein College in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #21 at Wilmington College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Wilmington, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College on Saturday, February 9, 2008 on the Hermann Court in the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m. This is the 14th OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the second of two regular season meetings versus the Quakers.                               

       

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. The games also can be heard via the WBWC's Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show begins 15 minutes prior to tipoff. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways and capture its fourth straight victory when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers in an Ohio Athletic Conference game.

B-W comes into this game with an 8-12 overall and 5-8 OAC record following an exciting, 87-84 win against Heidelberg College on Wednesday, February 6 in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won a season-high three straight games, including wins at Mount Union College (81-72) on January 30 and at home last Saturday versus Ohio Northern University (82-69).

Wilmington enters the game with a 12-8 overall and 7-6 OAC record following its 72-49 loss versus Muskingum College on Feb. 6 in New Concord. Despite the loss to the Fighting Muskies, the Quakers have won two of their last three games.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Wilmington-- This is the 22nd all-time meeting between B-W and Wilmington in men's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 13-8, but the Quakers have won the past three meetings, including a 72-70 win earlier this season on December 15, 2007 in Berea. Wilmington also won both meetings a year ago. The Quakers won the first game, 95-88 in overtime, in Berea, and won the second game, 75-68, in Wilmington.  The last B-W win came on Febuary 24, 2006 in the OAC Tournament semifinals when the Yellow Jackets beat the Quakers, 91-84.

In Last Year's First B-W versus Wilmington Game in Wilmington on December 15, 2007: Wilmington -- 72, B-W-- 70-- In the first of two regular season games between B-W and Wilmington, on December 15, 2007 in Berea at the Ursprung Gymnasium, the Quakers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 72-70. Leading the way for Wilmington was 6'7" sophomore forward Brandon Rogers with 16 points and seven rebounds. B-W was led by 6'2" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with a then career-high 25 points and seven rebounds.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 81.2 points per game and allows 83.1 ppg. for a minus 1.8 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 47.0 percent (586-of-1246) from the field, including 38.8 percent (162-of-417) from three-point range, and 75.3 percent (290-of-385) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 33.4 rpg. and give up 37.7 rpg. for a minus 4.2 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" junior Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6'4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale (Mich.) College)at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Louis Tumblin and 6'0" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg., is second with 4.3 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 47. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.3 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., leads the team in assists with 118 and is second with 40 threepointers and 29 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 13.7 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.3 rpg. and in blocked shots with 36. Tumblin is fourth with 12.1ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg., and is third with 25 three-pointers and 36 assists. Sekerak averages 7.9 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., is second on the team with 43 assists and leads the team with 46 steals. If Glass starts his second straight game in place of Brown, he will take in season totals of 4.8 ppg. and 2.1 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Dennis Santiago, 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/Sandy Valley), 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6' 5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/Coffman). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 8.0 ppg. and has 21 three-pointers.

In the B-W's Last Game on Feb. 6 versus Heidelberg College : B-W -- 87 --, Heidelberg-- 84-- In B-W's last game, an 87-84 win versus Heidelberg College on Wednesday, February 6 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Louis Tumblin with a career-high 27 points and five rebounds. In addition, Schuler and Bene had 12 points each and Sekerak had 10. B-W overcame a 10-point first half deficit and an eight-point second half deficit to go on to win its season-high third straight game.

Wilmington Information and Probable Starters -- Wilmington scores 69.8 ppg. and allows 65.9 ppg. for a plus 3.9 ppg. differential. The Quakers shoot 45.3 percent (527-of-1164) from the field, including 35.8% (124-of-346) from three-point range, and 72.1% (217-of-301) from the free throw line.

Look for Head Coach K.C. Hunt to start 5' 10" senior Zach Broermann, 6' 5" senior Fred Harrison and 6' 3" junior Justin Gaines in the backcourt. Up front, Hunt will start 6' 7" sophmore Brandon Rogers and 6' 4" senior forward Scott Walters. Rodgers leads all scorers with 12.9 ppg. and is first in rebounds at 6.0 rpg. He also shoots 53% from the field, has 18 three-pointers and is second with 24 blocked shots. Gaines is second in scoring at 9.3 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and has 43 assists. Harrison scores 8.5 ppg., grabs 3.2 rpg., has passed for 42 assists, made 39 steals and leads the team with 27 blocked shots. Walters scores 7.4 ppg., grabs 5.4 rpg. and has 26 assists and 24 steals. Broermann scores 7.2 ppg., leads the team with 25 three-pointers and has 40 assists.

Off the bench, look for Hunt to play at least six people. Look for 5' 9" sophomore guard Tyler Ledford, 6' 4" sophomore guard R.J. Brown, 6' 1" junior guard Kerry Wilkinson, 6' 4" freshman forward Mark Holt, 6'5" freshman forward Justin Tillman and 6'3" senior guard Nick Berter. Brown is the leading scorers off the bench with 7.8 ppg., Ledford scores 5.9 ppg. and Wilkinson 3.9 ppg.

In the Quakers Last Game on Feb. 6 versus Muskingum in New Concord: Muskingum-- 72, Wilmington -- 49 -- In Wilmington's last game, a 72-49 loss at Muskingum College in New Concord, the Quakers were led by Brandon Rogers with 11 points. He was the only Quaker to score in double figures. The loss ended a two-game win streak.

Brendan Schuler 24th All-Time in Scoring -- In Wednesday's 87-84 win versus Heidelberg, Brendan Schuler scored 12 points to give him 1,106 career points and surpassed Joe Mackey (1991-95) and Jon Carroll (1999-2003) to move into 24th place on the all-time scoring list. He needs three points to surpass Wilbur Wilson (1978-82) for 23rd place, six points to pass Jerry Suess (1952-55) for 22nd place and 11 to pass Dick Scott (1964-68) for 21st place. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 456 and eighth in three pointers with 178.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W. Bankson needs three more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 416-325 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 697 career wins in 44 years overall as a head coach and a 697-439 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
