BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore forward Brandon Rogers scored a team-high 16 points as the Wilmington College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College, 72-70, today (Saturday, December 15, 2007) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.
With its victory, the Quakers improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. B-W fell to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.
In the first half, the Yellow Jacket men jumped out to a 13-2 lead at the 16:07 mark when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) made his second of four triples. B-W built its largest lead at 15-3 at the 15:36 mark when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a layup.
Wilmington would then outscore B-W, 20-5, and take its first lead of the game at 23-20 at the 9:14 mark when sophomore forward Brandon Rogers made a three-pointer. The Quakers would lead by 10 points at 33-23 at the 6:17 mark off of another 10-3 run, capped by a layup and foul shot by senior forward Scott Walters.
Undaunted, B-W went on a 15-3 run to retake the lead at 38-36 with 56 seconds left before the intermission when Tumblin, who had 18 first half points, made his final of four triples. A Walters layup with 45 seconds left made the halftime score 38-38.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a five-point lead at 50-45 with 15:21 let when senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) made a jump shot. The Quakers then outscored B-W 13-4 to lead 58-54 with 8:58 left when senior guard Zach Broermann made a layup. B-W then returned the favor with 9-0 run to lead by four at 63-58 with 5:28 remaining when junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) made a layup. B-W had its final lead at 65-63 at the 3:12 mark when junior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Highland) made two foul shots.
The Quakers then took the lead at 66-65 with 3:01 left when senior guard Fred Harrison made a three-pointer. Wilmington increased its lead to four points on two separate occassions with the last being at 71-67 with 10 seconds left when Broermann made a pair of foul shots. A Schuler triple with four seconds left and a Rogers foul shot with one second left closed out the scoring.
In addition to Rogers, Broermann had 13 and Harrison had 10. Tumblin led the Yellow Jackets with a game and career-high 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Bene with 15 points and Schuler with 11 points and 11 assists.

Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it faces Wilmington College in its final game prior to the Christmas Holiday.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 3-4 overall and 1-1 OAC record following a 101-93 loss at OAC-rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, December 8 in Ada. B-W opened its 2007-2008 OAC schedule with a 65-63 victory against Mount Union College in Berea on Dec. 5. B-W also is 2-0 in the "friendly confines" of the Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Quakers enter this game with a 7-1 overall and 2-1 OAC record following a 72-41 thumping against Marietta College on Dec. 8 in Marietta. Wilmington's only loss is an 89-68 defeat to OAC preseason favorite Capital University in Columbus on Dec. 5. Wilmington began its season with six straight wins under first-year Head Coach K.C. Hunt.
The All-Time Series Between B-W and Wilmington-- This is the 21st all-time meeting between B-W and Wilmington in men's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 13-7, but the Quakers won both meetings a year ago. Wilmington won the first game, 95-88 in overtime, in Berea, and won the second game, 75-68, in Wilmington. The last B-W win came on Febuary 24, 2006 in the OAC Tournament semifinals when the Yellow Jackets beat the Quakers, 91-84.
In the Last Yellow Jacket Versus Quaker Matchup: Wilmington -- 75, Baldwin-Wallace -- 68 -- In the last game between B-W and Wilmington, on February 3, 2007, the Quakers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 75-68, in Wilmington to sweep the season series. Despite the loss, B-W was led by graduated senior Tori Davis with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Current 5'11" All-OAC senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 17 points. Wilmington was led by Justin Gaines who came off the bench to score 15 points.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 81.0 points per game and allows 82.9 ppg. for a minus 1.9 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 47.4 percent (197-of-416) from the field, including 41.9 percent (62-of-148) from three-point range, and 70.3% (111-of-158) from the free throw line.
Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) and 5' 9'' junior All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to join Brendan Schuler. Brown tops the team in scoring at 19.6 ppg. He also grabs 5.3 rpg. and tops the team with 19 three-pointers. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.7 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg., is second with 14 three-pointers and leads the team with 29 assists. Sekerak is scoring 11.1 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg., is second with 20 assists and leads the team with 22 steals. He also shoots 58.8 percent from the floor (30-of-51). Bene is scoring 10.9 ppg., grabs a team-leading 7.6 rpg. and tops the team with 12 blocked shots. Santiago is scoring 8.1 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and is shooting a team and OAC-best 93.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-15).
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6' 1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 5' 11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley), 6'2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6'5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman). Tumblin tops the players off the bench with 6.1 ppg.
In the B-W's Last Game on Dec. 8 versus Ohio Northern in Ada: Ohio Northern -- 101, B-W -- 93 -- In B-W's last game, a 101-93 loss at Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center in Ada, the Yellow Jackets were led by Kyle Brown with a team-high 20 points. He was supported in double figures by Brendan Schuler with 18 points and seven assists, Louis Tumblin with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench and Andrew Bene wit 10 points. Kyle Gehle led ONU with a game-high 25 points. A key to the loss was being outrebounded by ONU, 48-35.
Wilmington Information and Probable Starters -- Wilmington scores 73.5 ppg. and allows 62.6 ppg. for a + 10.9 ppg. differential. The Quakers shoot 47 percent (224-of-477) from the field, including 36.5% (94-of-116) from three-point range, and 81% (94-of-116) from the free throw line.
Look for Head Coach K.C. Hunt to start 5' 10" senior Zach Broermann, 6' 5" senior Fred Harrison and 6' 3" junior Justin Gaines in the backcourt. Up front, Hunt will start 6' 7" sophmore Brandon Rogers and 6' 4" senior forward Scott Walters. Rogers leads all scorers with 13.0 ppg. and is second in rebounds at 6.4 rpg. and blocked shots with 12. Gaines scores 10.8 ppg. and grabs 3.0 rpg. Broermann averages 9.4 ppg. with a team-high 23 assists and 12 three-pointers. Harrison scores 9.0 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg., is second with 19 assists and first with 13 steals and 16 blocked shots. Walters scores 9.6 ppg., grabs a team-leading 6.9 rpg. and shoots 58.5 percent from the floor (31-of-53).
Off the bench, look for Hunt to play 5' 9" sophomore guard Tyler Ledford, 6' 4" sophomore guard R.J. Brown, 6' 1" junior guard Kerry Wilkinson and 6' 4" freshman forward Mark Holt. Brown is the leading scorere off the bench with 8.5 ppg.
In the Quakers Last Game on Dec. 8 Versus Marietta in Marietta: Wilmington -- 72, Marietta-- 41 -- In Wilmington's last game, a 72-41 victory at Marietta in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, the Quakers were led by Brandon Rogers with a game-high 20 points. He also had nine rebounds and four three-pointers. Scott Walters chipped in 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and Justin Gaines had 10 points and four assists. Keys to the Quaker win were canning 10 three-pointers and forcing the Pioneers into making 18 turnovers.

Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs nine more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 411 victories and has a 411-317 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 692 career wins in 44 years overall and a 692-431 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
