In the Yellow Jackets' Last Game vs. Penn State Behrend -- Penn State Behrend -- 73, Baldwin-Wallace -- 68 -- In Baldwin-Wallace's last game, a 73-68 loss to host Penn State Behrend in the championship game of the Penn State Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania, the 20th-ranked Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by 6'4" junior transfer forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) with a game-high 21 points. In addition, 5'11" senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 19 points and 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 11. Bene also led the Yellow Jackets in rebounding with eight, Schuler had seven and Brown added six.
After trailing most of the game, B-W went on a 14-0 run to take the lead midway through the second half. Behrend regained the lead with a 22-10 run and B-W lost for the first time this winter. For the game, B-W made just 41 percent of its field goal attempts (25-of-61), including 10-of-26 three-pointers (38.5 percent).
For their efforts at Behrend, both Brown and Schuler were named to the all-tournament team.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College averages 81.0 ppg. and gives up 74.5 ppg. for a plus 6.5 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets shot 50.4 percent from the floor at Penn State Behrend, but it was the tale of two games. B-W shot 61.5 percent against Fredonia State (N.Y.) but just 41 percent against Behrend in the title game.
Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6'4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist senior Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), senior two-time All-OAC point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) and 6'1" sophmore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) to start. Brown is the leading scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game to go with 4.5 rpg. and a 51.7 field goal percentage (15-of-29) and 46.2 (six-of-13) from beyond the arc. Schuler is scoring with 15.0 ppg. with a team-leading 10 assists. Bene is third with 11.5 ppg. and a team-best 8.0 rpg. Sekerak scores 9.5 ppg., has a team-high five steals and nine assists. Tumblin is fifth on the team in scoring with 6.0 ppg.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 5'11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark), 6' 2" sophomore guard Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior), 6' 5"freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5 ' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) and 6'5" freshman forward Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman). Santiago is averaging 5.5 ppg., 3.5 rpg., and is perfect (six-of-six) from the foul line, Glass averages 2.5 ppg., Rockwell scores 5.0 ppg. and tallies 3.5 rpg. and Cayton averages 3.5 ppg.
The Ohio Wesleyan University Probable Starters and Information-- Ohio Wesleyan scores 54.5 ppg. and gives up 53.0 ppg for a plus 1.5 ppg. differential. The Battling Bishops shot just 30.8 percent from the floor last weekend at the University of Chicago and connected on just 33-of-107 shots, including just 18-of-60 (30 percent) from three-point range. OWU is a scrappy team that forced both Trinity (Texas) and Lake Forest (Ill.) into making 36 turovers.
Look for Head Coach Mike DeWitt to utilize all nine of his returnees, including a pair of starters. Look for DeWitt to rely on his two returning All-North Coast Athletic Conference post players in 6' 5" senior Dustin Rudegeair and 6' 5" senior Jesse Jean. Rudegeair leads the Battling Bishops with 12.5 ppg. and 7.5 rpg. Jean moved into the starting lineup part way through the 2007-2008 season and this season is averaging 4.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Running the show at point guard will be 6' 0" senior Casey Teeters, who averages 7.0 ppg. and is tied for the team lead with four assists. Look for DeWitt to turn to 6' 2" senior Brian Cafarella and 6' 3" junor Kyle Holliday to fill the wings spots. Cafarella is second on the team with 9.5 ppg. and has made a team-leading five three-pointers. Holliday is a versatile player averaging 8.5 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. and tops the team with six steals.
Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior Ryan Rozak, 6'7" senior Elliot Kaple to play important front line positions. Also look for 6'3" junior Kyle Miller to rotate in at the wing position. He averages 4.0 ppg. and has two triples. 5'11" sophomore Robby Gardiner will back up Teeters at the point. DeWitt also used 6' 8" sophomore Breant Pleiman at Chicago and he scored 4.0 ppg.
