BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) scored a game-high-tying 21 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated Otterbein College, 93-87 in overtime, tonight (Wednesday, January 9. 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
In addition to Tumblin, Yellow Jacket senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) hit a key three-pointer with one second left on the shot clock and 27.4 seconds left in the game to give B-W a 92-87 lead and then added a foul shot for his 1,000th career point with 15.61 seconds left.
With its victory, B-W improved to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the. With its loss, Otterbein falls to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the OAC and lost for the second straight game.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the 18:12 mark when Tumblin made a three-pointer. The Cardinals then outscored B-W 28-10 to take a 28-14 lead at the 9:17 mark when sophomore guard Brian Pollock scored on a layup. The Jackets then outscored Otterbein 18-9 to close to within five points at 33-28 with 4:08 left when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) canned a three-pointer. A 15-8 Cardinal run in the final four minutes gave Otterbein a 48-36 halftime lead.
In the second half, Otterbein built its largest lead at 15 points at 53-38 with 18:42 left when sophomore forward Cory Ratai made a jumper. B-W then outscored the Cardinals 33-19 to close to within one point at 72-71 with 7:38 remaining when junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) made a layup. After Otterbein regained a four-point lead at 77-73 on a pair of foul shots by senior guard Ross Banaszak. B-W outscored the Cardinals 8-4 to tie the game at 81-81 when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a pair of foul shots with 23 seconds left. A Banaszak jumper at the regulation buzzer missed and sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime, Otterbein scored first on a layup by sophomore point guard Rocco Fortuna with 3:26 left to take an 83-81 lead. B-W then scored the next six points to take an 87-83 lead when Tumblin made a pair of foul shots with 1:51 left. The Cardinals then cut B-W’s lead to two points twice, with the last being at 89-87 when Banaszak made two more foul shots with 1:03 left. That setup Schuler’s end of the game shot-making.
In addition to Tumblin’s 21 points, B-W also had Schuler with 16, Sekerak, junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and Santiago each had 12 points and Brown had 11. Bene also had a game-high 10 rebounds as B-W outrebounded Otterbein, 49-38.
Banaszak led Otterbein with 21 points and was joined in double figures by freshman guard Ray Welch with 16, Pollock with with 16, freshman forward Alan Kavanaugh with 12 and Ratai had 11.
B-W will next play on Saturday, January 12 when it travels to New Concord to play Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. The next Yellow Jacket home game is on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College in an OAC game on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. in Berea. This is the fifth OAC game of the regular season and the first of two games between the two schools during the regular season.

Otterbien started the season by losing its first five games, but has since rebounded to win three of its next seven contests.

In addition, Louis Tumblin had 15 points and both Kyle Brown and Brendan Schuler each added 13 markers. B-W trailed 49-40 at halftime. In the second half, Capital outrebounded B-W, 35-16, to build its lead and earn the win.
Otterbein Information and Probable Starters -- Otterbein scores 80.2 ppg. and allows 84.9 ppg. for a plus 4.7 ppg. differential. The Cardinals shoot 46.2% (351-of-760) from the field, including 38.2% (110-of-288) from three-point range, and 74.3% (150-of-202) from the free throw line.
Look for veteran Head Coach Dick Reynolds to start 6'5'' sophomore Cory Ratai and 6'6'' freshman Alan Kavanaugh in the post. In the backcourt, Ross Banaszak teams with Adam Wells and Brian Pollock. Banaszak is the leading scorer with 19.9 ppg. and leads the team with 58 assists and 25 steals and shoots a teamleading 86.1% (31-of-36) from the free throw line. He also is second with 26 three-pointers. Wells is second in scoring with 17.8 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg. and leads the team with 32 three-pointers. Ratai is scoring at 11.7 ppg., grabs a team-high 5.8 rpg. and shoots a team-leading 67.5% from the floor (54-of-80). Pollock scores 9.6 ppg. and is third in rebounding with 4.5 caroms per game. Kavanaugh rounds out the starting five by scoring 4.4 ppg. and is second in both shooting percentage (52.0%) and free-throw percentage (84.6%).
Off the bench, look Reynolds to utilize 5'9" sophomore point guard Rocco Fortuna, 6'0'' sophomore guard Kyle Wells and a pair of 6'8'' junior posts in Frank Hall and Sean Cross. Fortuna leads this group with 6.0 ppg. and Cross leads with 4.2 rpg.

Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs seven more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is tied for third all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 412 victories and has a 412-320 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 693 career wins in 44 years overall and a 693-434 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
Brendan Schuler is 16 Points Shy of 1,000 in his Career -- Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) is 16 points shy of becoming the 35th player to join the 1,000-Point Club at B-W. Schuler also has 395 career assists to rank fifth all-time and 162 three-pointers to rank 10th all-time.
