Otterbein College Men Beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 94-84, in Westerville

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard Adam Wells and sophomore guard Brian Pollack scored 28 points each tonight (Wednesday, February 13, 2008) as the Otterbein College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 94-84, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rike Center in Westerville

With its win, the Cardinals improved to 6-16 overall and 5-10 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 8-14 overall and 5-10 in the OAC and lost its second straight.

In the first half, Otterbein jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 19:43 mark when Pollock made a jump shot.  After two ties, the Cardinals gained control and built their lead to 14 points at 45-31 with 35 seconds left when Wells made three-pointer.  Otterbein also led at halftime 45-33.

In the second half, B-W went on an 11-5 run to cut Otterbein's lead to six points at 50-44 with 17:33 left when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) hit a three pointer.  Then the Cardinals went on an 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the game of 15 points at 61-46 with 13:19 left when Wells hit another three-pointer.  Then B-W went on a 20-9 run to get within four points at 70-66 with 7:16 left when junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) made a three-pointer.

Otterbein went on a 14-5 run to build its lead back to 13 points 84-71 with 2:08 left when senior guard Ross Banaszak made two free throws.  The closest B-W would get after that point is 10 points on two seperate occassions.

In addition to Wells and Pollack, Banaszak had 21 points for the Cardinals.  B-W was led by sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) with 19 points, Tumblin scored 14, and Santiago and sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior) came off the bench to each score 13 points.

B-W will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they host OAC rival Muskingum College on Al Sirat Grotto Day in Berea at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds from that game will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy. Game Notes #22 at Otterbein College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Westerville, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m. This is the 15th OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the second of two regular season meetings versus the Cardinals.

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. The games also can be heard via the WBWC's Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show begins 15 minutes prior to tipoff. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track as it travels to Westerville, Ohio to play the Otterbein College Cardinals.

B-W comes into this game with an 8-13 overall and 5-9 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 70-60 lost against Wilmington College on Saturday, February 9 in Wilmington. The Yellow Jackets have won three of their last four games and are tied for seventh place in the OAC with a 5-9 record.

Otterbein enters the game with a 5-16 overall and 4-10 OAC record following its 76-71 loss versus Mount Union on Feb. 9 in Alliance. The Cardinals are in ninth place in the OAC with a 4-10 record and have lost two straight games.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Otterbein-- This is the 91st meeting between the B-W and Otterbein in men's basketball. Otterbein leads the all-time series, 50-40. In the first match-up, B-W defeated Otterbein, 93-87, in Berea. The last Otterbein win came last year when the Cardinals beat the Yellow Jackets, 83-74, in Berea.

In This Year's First B-W versus Otterbein Game in Berea on January 9, 2008: B-W -- 93, Otterbein -- 87 In Overtime-- In the first of two regular season games between B-W and Otterbein, on January 9, 2008 in Berea at the Ursprung Gymnasium, the Yellow Jackets beat the Cardinals, 93-87 in overtime. B-W placed a season-high six players in double figures and was led by 6'2" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with 21 points and six rebounds. In addition, 6'0" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored 16 points, , the trio of 6'0" senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) each scored 12 points and 6'4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) had 11. For the Cardinals, senior guard Ross Banaszak lead the way with 21 points. He was joined in double figures by 6'0" freshman guard Ray Welch who came off the bench to score 17 points and make five three-pointers, 6'2" junior guard Brian Pollock had 16 points, 6'6" freshman forward Alan Kavanaugh had 12 and 6'5" sophomore forward Cory Ratai added 11.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.2 points per game and allows 82.4 ppg. for a minus 2.2 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.9 percent (611-of-1302) from the field, including 38.0 percent (164-of-432) from three-point range, and 74.1 percent (298-of-402) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 33.3 rpg. and give up 37.5 rpg. for a minus 4.2 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and Kyle Brown at the post positions and Tyler Sekerak, Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler in the backcourt. Brown tops the team in scoring at 16.4 ppg., is third with 4.2 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 49. Schuler is second in scoring at 14.9 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., leads the team in assists with 120 and is second with 40 three-pointers and 30 steals.  Bene is third in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.2 rpg. and in blocked shots with 36. Tumblin is fourth with 11.9 ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg., and is third with 25 three-pointers and 36 assists. Sekerak averages 7.8 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., is second on the team with 47 assists and leads the team with 48 steals.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Dennis Santiago, 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) and 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.7 ppg. and has 21 three-pointers. Glass scores 5.0 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg.

In the B-W's Last Game on Feb. 9 versus Wilmington College in Wilmington: Wilmington-- 70, Baldwin-Wallace -- 60 -- In B-W's last game, a 70-60 loss to Wilmington College last Saturday, February 9 in Wilmington, the Yellow Jackets were led by Kyle Brown with 12 points and Andrew Bene with 10 points and six rebounds. The key to the loss was B-W shooting just 44.6% from the floor, including just two-of-15 from three-point range.

Otterbein Information and Probable Starters -- Otterbein scores 79.2 ppg. and allows 85.0 ppg. for a minus 5.8 ppg. differential.  The Cardinals shoot 46.2 percent (604-of-1307) from the field, including 37.4% (197-of-527) from three-point range, and 77.1% (259-of-336) from the free throw line.

Look for Head Coach Dick Reynolds to start Ross Banaszak, Brian Pollock and 6' 2" senior Adam Wells in the backcourt. Wells missed the first game between the two teams. On the inside, Reynolds will start Cory Ratai at forward and 6' 8" junior Sean Cross at center. Banaszak leads the team in scoring with 20.3 ppg., in assists with 104 and steals with 41. Wells scores 17.0 ppg. and has made a team-best 51 treys. Pollock is third in scoring as he averages 11.4 ppg., and third in rebounding at 4.1. Ratai scores 10.2 ppg., grabs a team-high 5.9 rpg. Cross scores 3.5 ppg., and adds 2.7 rpg. Off the bench, look for Reynolds to play Ray Welch, 6'8'' junior center Frank Hall, Alan Kavanaugh and 5'9'' sophomore point guard Rocco Fortuna. Fortuna scores 4.5 ppg.

In the Cardinals Last Game on Feb. 9 versus Mount Union in Alliance: Mount Union-- 76, Otterbein -- 71 -- In Otterbein's last game, a 76-71 loss at Mount Union College in the Timken Gymnasium in Alliance on Feb. 9, the Cardinals were led by Ross Banaszak with a team-high 18 points. Brian Pollock chipped in 17 points, Cory Ratai added 13 and a team-high eight rebounds and Aam Wells rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points. The Cards were hurt by making just 12-of-18 foul shots for 67% and committed five more turnovers than the Purple Raiders.

Brendan Schuler 22nd All-Time in Scoring -- In Saturday's 70-60 loss to Wilmington, Brendan Schuler scored six points to give him 1,112 career points and as he surpassed both Wilbur Wilson (1978-1982) for 23rd place and Jerry Seuss (1952-1955) for 22nd on the all-time scoring list. Schuler now needs five points to pass Dick Scott (1964-1968) to move into 21st place. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 458 and eighth in three pointers with 178.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson looks to win his 698th career game at B-W and in the OAC when the Jackets play at Otterbein. Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W. Bankson needs three more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 416-326 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 697 career wins in 44 years overall and a 697-440 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
