Baldwin-Wallace Men Beat Ohio Northern, 82-69, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored a game-high 22 points and junior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Senior) added 20 points today (Saturday, February 2, 2008) as Bakldwin-Wallace College defeated Ohio Northern University, 82-69, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 7-12 overall and 4-8 in the OAC and won their second straight game. With its loss, ONU dropped to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-1 lead at the 17:07 mark when junior Bene made a layup. B-W extended its lead to 12 points at 16-4 at the 14:17 mark when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a layup. ONU then outscored B-W 16-9 to cut the lead to five points at the 25-20 mark with 6:58 left when sophomore guard Kyle Meyer scored following a missed Polar Bear shot. ONU got within one point at 31-30 with 3:25 left in the first stanza when junior forward Loudon Hammersmith made a jump shot. B-W led at halftime, 38-35.

In the second half, B-W rebuilt its lead back to nine points on three separate occasions with the last being at 48-39 with 15:19 left when senior guard Schuler made a layup. ONU went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to three points at 50-47 with 11:52 left when junior guard Mitch Anderson made a jumper. B-W then went on its own 9-2 run to lead by 10 points at 59-49 with 10:05 left when Bene made a jumper, was fouled and made the subsequent foul shot.

 B-W then went on a 13-7 run to take its largest lead of the game at 72-56 with 3:32 left when Schuler made a three-pointer. The closest ONU would get would be seven points at 74-67 with 1:31 remaining. A key for B-W was making 11 of its last 13 foul shots down the stretch and final 5:07 of the contest.

In addition to Schuler and Bene, sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) scored 16 points. For ONU, Anderson, junior guards Kyle Gehle and Kurtis Brown all scored 13 points each, junior center Jake Cannan had 11 and Meyer had 10.

B-W will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6 when it hosts OAC rival Heidelberg College at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #19 HOST Ohio Northern University

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday, February 2, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.  This is the 12th OAC regular season game and the second of two regular season meetings between B-W and ONU.

The Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game when the Yellow Jackets host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 6-12 overall and 3-8 OAC record following an 81-72 victory against OAC rival Mount Union College in Alliance on Wednesday, January 30. The win ended a season-high five-game losing streak and gave B-W a season-sweep of its arch-rival.

The Polar Bears enter the game with an 11-7 overall and 7-4 OAC record following their 89-72 victory against OAC arch-rival Heidelberg College in Ada on Jan. 30. ONU has won two straight contests.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Ohio Northern-- This is the 82nd all-time meeting between B-W and ONU in men's basketball with the Polar Bears leading the all-time series, 52-29, including two straight wins and a 101-93 victory in the first meeting this season in Ada on December 8, 2007. Last season, the teams split the season series as each team picked up a win "on the road". The last Yellow Jacket win versus ONU was a 94-77 triumph on December 9, 2006 in Ada.

In the Last B-W versus ONU Game on December 8, 2007 in Ada: Ohio Northern -- 101, Baldwin-Wallace -- 93 -- In the first meeting this season between B-W and ONU, on December 8, 2007, the Polar Bears defeated the Yellow Jackets, 101-93, in Ada. Despite the loss, 6'4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored a team-high 20 points to lead B-W. In addition, 5'11" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 18 points, 6'2" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had 12 and 6'6" junior post Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 10. ONU was led by 6'1" senior guard Kyle Gehle's game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Gehle was joined in double figure scoring by 6'8" junior center Jake Cannan with 23 points, 6'2" junior guard Mitch Anderson came off the bench to score 12 and 6'7" junior forward Loudan Hammersmith added 11 markers.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College averages 80.8 points per game and allows 83.8 ppg. for a minus 2.9 point-per-game differential. B-W shoots 46.7 percent (524-of-1,121) from the field, 38.5 percent (147-of-382) from three-point range, and 74.9 percent (260-of-347) from the free throw line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and Kyle Brown at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown is the leading scorer at 18.1 ppg. He also grabs 4.6 rebounds-per-game and leads the team with 45 threepointers. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.1 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg., leads the team with 103 assists and is second with 35 three-pointers and 25 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 13.4 ppg., leads the team with 7.3 rpg. and 33 blocked shots and shoots 52.3% from the floor. Tumblin scores 11.0 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg. and is third in three-pointers with 21 and assists with 34. Sekerak scores 7.8 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., has a team-high 44 steals and is second with 38 assists.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 5'11" junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), 5'11 freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5'7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley), 6'2" sophomore Paul Glass (Medina Senior) and 6'5" freshman Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman). Santiago scores 8.1 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and has 19 three-pointers. Glass scores 4.9 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game at Mount Union in Alliance on January 30, 2008: Baldwin-Wallace -- 81, Mount Union -- 72- - In B-W's last game, an 81-72 victory against Mt. Union College on January 30 in the Timken PE Building in Alliance, Kyle Brown scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. In addition, Andrew Bene had his fourth doubledouble of the season with 19 points and a game-high-tying 10 rebounds and Dennis Santiago came off the bench to score 12 points. B-W rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to win. Keys to the victory included outrebounding the taller Purple Raiders, 38-36, forcing 18 Mt. Union turnovers and making 20-of-22 foul shots (90.9%), including all 14 in the second half and six-of-six in the final 46 seconds.

Ohio Northern University Probable Starters and Information-- Ohio Northern averages 73.1 ppg. and gives up 67.4 ppg. for a plus 5.7 ppg. differential. The Polar Bears shoot 45.7% from the field (472-of-1,033), 35.5% from three-point range (115-of-324) and 73.0% from the foul line (257-of-352).

Look for third year Head Coach Jeff Coleman to start 6'2" sophomore Ezra Bradshaw at the point guard, 6'3" junior Steve Young and Kyle Gehle at the guard positions and Loudan Hammersmith and Jake Cannan on the inside. Gehle tops the team in scoring at 17.1 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and has the most three-pointers with 51. Cannan is second in scoring at 12.6 ppg., grabs a team-leading 8.6 rpg. and has blocked a team-leading 25 shots. Hammersmith scores 6.4 ppg., grabs 4.7 rpg. and has blocked 13 shots. Bradshaw scores 4.6 ppg., grabs 2.4 rpg. and has 45 assists. Young scores 3.6 ppg. and has 10 three-pointers.

Off the bench look for Coleman to play 6'2" junior wing Kurtis Brown, 6'5" sophomore wing Kyle Meyer, 6'2" junior wing Mitch Anderson, 6'5" freshman forward Sam Bastian and 6'1" senior guard Mark Pratt. Meyer leads the "bench bunch" with 11.2 ppg. and is second on the team with 5.3 rpg and also shoots a team leading 64.4 percent from the floor (85-of-132). Brown scores 6.9 ppg., leads the team with 51 assists and 18 steals and is second with 24 three-pointers.

In the Polar Bears Last Game vs. Heidelberg in Ada: Ohio Northern -- 89, Heidelberg -- 72-- In Ohio Northern's last game, an 89-72 victory against OAC arch-rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday January 30 in Ada, the Polar Bears were led in scoring by Kyle Gehle with 24 points, including four three-pointers. In addition, Jake Cannan had a doubledouble with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Kyle Meyer came off the bench to score 16 points, Loudon Hammersmith had 12 points and eight rebounds and Erza Bradshaw had 10 points. Keys to the win for ONU was shooting 57.6% from the floor compared to just 36.9% for Heidelberg, outrebounding the Student Princes, 44-34, and making 16-of-19 foul shots.

Better at Home, But Tough on the Road -- The Yellow Jackets are 3-3 at home this season, but 1-5 in OAC road games.

Brendan Schuler Enters The Top 30 in B-W All-Time Scoring -- In Saturday's 81-72 victory against Mount Union College, Brendan Schuler scored six points to give him 1,072 career points and tying Ryan Sooy (1993-97) for 28th place on the all-time scoring list. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 441and ninth in three pointers with 173.

Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs five more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. Bankson also has 695 career wins in 44 years overall and a 695-438 mark.  In addition, Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 414 victories. He has a 414-325 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W and in the OAC.

Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director, is a member of three halls-of-fame and received a national leadership award at last year's NABC National Convention.
