Ohio Northern University Men's Basketball Team Defeats Baldwin-Wallace College, 101-93, in Ada

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard Kyle Gehle scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as the Ohio Northern University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 101-93, today (Saturday, December 8, 2007) in the ONU Sports Center in Ada.
 
With its victory, the Polar Bears improved to 5-3 overall, 2-1 in the OAC. B-W fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, ONU took an early 8-4 lead at the 18:19 mark when junior forward Jake Cannan scored on a layup. The Yellow Jackets then outscored ONU 28-16 and built their largest lead at eight points at 32-24 with 7:30 remaining when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made one of two foul shots. ONU outscored B-W 20-11 and took its final lead of the half at 44-43 with 32 seconds left before the intermission when Gehle made a pair of foul shots.  
 
In the second half, ONU led throughout and built a 10-point advantage at 74-64 with 9:36 left when freshman forward Sam Bastain scored on a jump shot. The closest B-W would get in the second stanza was four points at 77-73 with 6:55 left when freshman guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) made two foul shots. ONU then outscored B-W 22-15 and built its largest lead of the game at 99-88 with 41 seconds left when junior center Loudon Hammersmith dunked off a fast break.
 
In addition to Gehle, Cannan had 23 points, junior guard Mitch Anderson had 12 and Hammersmith added 11. Despite the loss for B-W, Brown led the way with 20 points, senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 18, sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) came off the bench to score 12 and junior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Senior) had 10. Brown also led B-W with nine rebounds.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday, December 8 in the ONU Sports Center at 3:00 p.m. This is B-W's second OAC regular season game.

Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will travel to Ada to face OAC rival Ohio Northern University in search of its third straight victory.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 3-3 overall and 1-0 OAC record following a thrilling 65-63 victory against Mount Union College on Wednesday in Berea. The game was the OAC-opener for B-W. The victory was B-W's second straight as the Yellow Jackets also beat Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 95-82, on November 29 in Berea.

The Polar Bears enter this game with a 4-3 overall and 1-1 OAC record following a 72-70 loss against Heidelberg College on Wednesday in Tiffin. The loss ended a two-game ONU winning streak.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Ohio Northern-- This is the 81st all-time meeting between B-W and ONU with the Polar Bears leading the all-time series, 51-29, including an 83-74 victory in the last meeting in Berea on January 27, 2007. B-W and ONU split the season series last year with B-W upsetting the then third-ranked Polar Bears, 94-77, in Ada, on December 9, 2006.

In the Last Yellow Jacket Versus Polar Bear Matchup: Ohio Northern -- 83, Baldwin-Wallace -- 74 -- In the last game between B-W and ONU, on January 27, 2007, the Polar Bears defeated the Yellow Jackets, 83-74, in Berea to split the season series. Despite the loss, B-W was led by two-time Division III All-American and OAC Player of the Year Tori Davis' 34-point and five-rebound performance. In addition, current 5'11" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairvierw) had 12 points and eight assists. ONU was led to victory by current 6'8" junior post Jake Cannan with 24 points. In addition, current 6'1" senior guard Kyle Gehle had 21 points and four three-pointers and current 6'2" junior guard Kurtis Brown had 14 points and four triples.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College averages 79.0 points per game and allows 79.8 ppg. for a -0.8 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 47.0 percent (165-of-351) from the field, 42.9 percent (54-of-126) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (90-of-126) from the free throw line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) and 5' 9'' junior All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to join Brendan Schuler. Brown is the leading in scorer, averaging 19.5 points per game. He also grabs 4.7 rebounds per game and has 18 three-pointers. Schuler is scoring 15.3 ppg., grabs 3.2 rpg. and tops the team with 30 assists and 12 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 11 ppg. and tops the squad with 8.3 rpg. and 11 blocked shots. Sekerak is scoring 11.8 ppg., grabs 3.3 rpg. and tops the team with 16 steals. Santiago is scoring 8.5 ppg., grabs 3.2 rpg. and is 14-of-15 from the charity stripe.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 5'11 freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5 ' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley). Tumblin tops the players off the bench with 5.2 ppg.

In the B-W's Last Game on Dec. 5 versus Mount Union in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 65, Mt. Union -- 63 -- In B-W's last game, a 65-63 victory against Mt. Union College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Brendan Schuler with a game-high 16 points, including a pair of game-clinching foul shots with 6.57 seconds remaining. In addition, Kyle Brown had 14 points and seven rebounds, Tyler Sekerak had 13 points and three steals and Louis Tumblin added 10 off the bench. Andrew Bene led B-W with 10 rebounds and was one point shy of his second straight double-double. B-W overcame a 15-point first half deficit to post its second straight win.

Ohio Northern University Information and Probable Starters -- Ohio Northern averages 69.6 points per game and allows 63.4 ppg. for a 6.2 ppg. differential. ONU shoots 43 percent (181-of-424) from the field, 34 percent (48-of-143) from three-point range, and 73 percent (77-of-105) from the free throw line.

Look for third-year Head Coach Jeff Coleman to start Kyle Gehle, 6'2" sophomore Erza Bradshaw and either Kurtis Brown or 6'3" junior Steve Young in the backcourt. Jake Cannan, the older brother of Yellow Jacket freshman forward Jeff Cannan, and 6'7" junior Loudan Hammersmith will play on the inside. Gehle leads all scorers with 13.7 ppg. and has 3.4 rpg., Bradshaw scores 4.1 ppg, and leads the team with 21 assists, Kuris Brown scres 6.6 ppg. and averages 3.6 rpg., Steve Young averages 4 ppg. and 2.0 rpg., Jack Cannon scores 10.1 ppg. and leads the team with 8.1 rpg. and nine blocks.

Off the bench, look for Coleman to also play 6'1" senior Mark Pratt, 6'2" junior Mitch Anderson, 6'5" freshman Sam Bastian, 6'5" sophomore Kyle Meyer and 6'5" freshman Sean Whitney. Meyer tops the "bench bunch" in scoring with 10.9 ppg.

In the Polar Bears Last Game on Dec. 5 at Heidelberg: Heidelberg -- 72, Ohio Northern -- 70 -- In ONU's last game, a 72-70 loss against Heidelberg College in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, the Polar Bears were led by Kyle Gehle with 23 points and six rebounds. In addition, Kyle Meyer and Kurtis Brown contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively off the bench. A key in the loss was ONU committing 19 turnovers and being outscored at the foul line, 16-11.

Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs eight more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 411 victories and has a 411-316 record in 27 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 692 career wins in 44 years overall and a 692-430 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
