John Carroll Men Defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 76-69, in Columbus to Advance to OAC Championship Game

BEREA, OHIO —Senior forward Terry Walsh scored 23 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds as the the second-seeded John Carroll University men’s basketball team defeated third-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College, 76-69, in the first of two Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Final Four/ semifinal games tonight (Friday, February 23, 2007) in the Capital Center at host Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. JCU will play the winner of top-seeded Capital and Otterbein College in the 2007 OAC Championship Game tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. That Capital versus Otterbein game begins at 8:00 p.m.

With its win, JCU is now 19-8 overall and ended a six-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets.  With its loss, B-W ends its season at 18-9 overall and with four straight seasons of 18 or more victories, including a school-record 25 when the Yellow Jackets won their second straight OAC Tournament title.

In addition to Walsh, junior guard John Curran had 15 points and senior guard Pete Moran and junior forward Brandon Mimes had 11 each. For B-W, senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Catholic) led the way with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brookpark/ Mid Park) with 14 points and junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 13.

In the first half, the Blue Streaks jumped out to a quick, 4-0 lead before B-W tied it at 4-4 when Davis scored off of an offensive rebound at the 16:26 mark. Following a tie at 6-6 and three lead changes, the Yellow Jackets gained control of the first stanza and had a lead as large as six points on two occassions with the last being 29-23 at the 1:46 mark when Schuler scored on a layup off of a fast break. B-W also led at halftime, 31-26

In the second half, JCU scored the first five points to tie the score at 31-31 with 18:25 left when Mimes scored on a layup, was fouled and made his foul shot. B-W then outscored the Blue Streaks 5-0 to build a 40-35 lead with 15:32 left before JCU outscored the Jackets; 7-2 to tie it again at 42-42 wth 13:30 left. It was tied at 46-46 with 10:34 left when JCU went on a 28-19 run and steadily built its biggest lead of nine points for the first time with 52 seconds left in the game when Walsh made one of two foul shots.

With his 15 points, Davis ends his career seventh on the all-time OAC scoring list with 2,232 points. Davis also had 950 career rebounds to rank fifth and is B-W’s all-time leading shot blocker with 242.

The winner of tomorrow's OAC Championship Game receives an automatic berth to the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins next week.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Final Four on Friday and Saturday, February 23-24 at top-seeded Capital University and in The Capital Center. On Friday, Feb. 23, B-W will play Cleveland cross-town rival and second-seeded John Carroll University in the first semifinal game at 6:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the OAC Championship game on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and face the winner of Capital University versus fifth-seed Otterbein College.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its sixth straight game this season, seventh consecutive against OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll and advance to the OAC Tournament Championship Game for the third straight season when it plays the rival Blue Streaks at 6:00 p.m. in the first of two OAC semifinal games in Columbus. Host Capital University plays fifth-seed Otterbein at 8:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets come into this game at 18-8 overall, have won five straight games and are seeded third. B-W advanced to the semifinals with an 95-82 victory against Heidelberg College on Wednesday (Feb. 21) in the first round in Berea.

JCU also is 18-8 overall, has won 10 of its last 12 games and is seeded second. The Blue Streaks reached the semifinals with a 102-88 win versus Wilmington College on Wednesday (Feb. 21) in University Heights.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and John Carroll-- This is the 99th time that JCU and B-W have met in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 55-43, including two wins this season and six straight overall. B-W beat JCU, 80-73, on January 3 in University Heights and defeated the Blue Streaks, 81-77, in Berea on February 15. The last JCU win against B-W came on January 12, 2005 in Berea by the score of 70-68.

The Second Meeting This Season on February 15, 2007 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 81, John Carroll-- 77-- In the second meeting this season between B-W and John Carroll, on February 15, 2007 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 81-77. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) with a game-high 32 points , 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Other key contributors to victory were 5'11" junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) and 6'0" junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry) with 13 points each, and 6'6" sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 10 points and seven rebounds. JCU was paced by senior 6'0" guard Pete Moran with 17 points, 6'5" freshman guard Rudy Kirbus had 16 and 6'4" senior forward Terry Walsh with 15 points.

The First Meeting This Season on January 3, 2007 in University Hieghts: Baldwin-Wallace -- 80, John Carroll - - 73-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and JCU, on January 3, 2007 in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 80-73. Leading the way for B-W was Brendon Schuler with a career-high 25 points as he connected on six-of-eight three-pointers, grabbed six rebounds and passed for three assists. In addition, Tori Davis made all seven of his shots from the floor and added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) scored 14 points. The Blue Streaks were led by Terry Walsh with 20 points, Pete Moran with 17 points, 6'5" senior forward Brandon Mimes with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Rudy Kirbus had 11 markers. The game featured 41 turnovers, 46 fouls and 52 foul shots.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 79.0 points per game and give up 73.5 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.5 ppg. B-W is grabbing 35.9 rebounds per contest, 3.8 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 49 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range and 76.4 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start Tori Davis and Andrew Bene at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak, Brendan Schuler and Dennis Santiago to start. Davis tops the team and OAC in scoring at 22.7 points per game, in rebounding with 8.8 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.3 percent on 203-of-311 attempts and with 57 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 13.0 ppg, grabs 3.6 rpg. and tops the team and OAC with 144 assists, shoots a team-leading 90.1 percent from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 55 three-pointers. Bene scores 6.8 ppg., is second with 5.3 rpg., shoots 49 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 10.7 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is second on the team with 41 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 7.1 ppg.,grabs 3.5 rpg., has 22 triples and is second with 58 assists and 21 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Clark leads the "Bench Bunch" with 6.8 ppg. and 2.5 rpg. and has 38 assists. Tumblin scores 5.8 ppg. and is tied for third with Sekerak with 22 threepointers.  Jesko scores 3.8 ppg. and has 21 triples. Glass averages 1.3 ppg. and is four-of-six from behind the three-point line. Mong scores 0.9 ppg. and grabs 1.0 rpg.

The John Carroll University Probable Starters and Information-- The Blue Streaks score an OAC-leading 81.2 points per game and give up and OAC-leading 75.6 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.6 ppg. JCU is grabbing 39.7 rebounds per contest, 2.7 more per game than its opponents. The Streaks' shoot 45.7 percent from the field, 33.7 percent from three-point range and 67 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Head Coach Mike Moran to play at least 11-to-12 players during the game. He will start his son and team-leader, Pete Moran, Rudy Kirbus and 6'1'' senior guard Chris Day in the backcourt. On the inside, look for Brandon Mimes and Terry Walsh to start. Mimes tops the team in scoring with 20.3 ppg. and 10.6 rpg. He also shoots 50.3 percent from the floor, has passed for 41 assists, made 41 steals and blocked 42 shots. Walsh is second in scoring with 15.7 ppg., grabs 5.8 rpg., has a team-leading 57 three-pointers and has 51 assists and 28 steals and shoots 81.5 percent from the foul line. Moran scores 11.0 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg., has a team-leading 126 assists and is second with 34 steals. Day scores 8.6 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg., is third with 32 steals, has 52 assists and has connected on 19 triples. Kirbus scores 6.1 ppg., grabs 2.0 rpg. and has 12 three-pointers.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" freshman guard Chris Zajac, 6'0" junior guard John Curran, 6'3" freshman guard Joe Haffey, 6'3'' senior forward Joe Kimener, 6'4'' freshman guard T.J. In B-W's OAC First Round Victory Versus Heidelberg College on Feb. 21 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 95, Heidelberg-- 82-- In B-W's last game, a 95-82 Yellow Jacket OAC Tournament first round victory versus Heidelberg College on Wednesday (Feb. 21) in Berea, the B-W was led by Tori Davis' game-highs of 30 points and 10 rebounds.  In addition, Brendan Schuler had 16 points, Andrew Bene 14, Tyler Sekerak 12 and Tom Jesko came off the bench to score 111, including three key first half three-pointers to bust open the Student Prince zone defense. The win was a season-high fifth straight for the Yellow Jackets.

In John Carroll's OAC First Round Win Versus Wilmington College on Feb. 21 in University Heights, Ohio: John Carroll-- 102, Wilmington --88-- In John Carroll's first round, 102-88 OAC Tournament win in University Heights, against Wilmington College on Wednesday (Feb. 21), the Blue Streaks placed six players in double figure scoring and were led by Brandon Mimes and Terry Walsh with 19 points each. In addition, Pete Curran came off the bench to score 16 points, Pete Moran 15, Chris Day 13 and Rudy Kirbus 10. Keys to the win were shooting 55.6 percent from the floor for the game, including making 10-of-22 three-pointers, and outrebounding the Quakers, 49-33.

OAC Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets have captured the past two OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Overall, B-W has won five OAC Tournament titles (1967, 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006).

Tori Davis Has 2,217 Career Points and is First at B-W and Seventh in OAC History -- Tori Davis is B-W's all-time leading scorer with 2,217 career points and stands seventh all-time in OAC history. In addition, Davis is fifth all-time at B-W in rebounding with 933 and is the school record-holder with 240 blocked shots.

When Sekerak Scores 13 or More -- Over the past two years B-W is 10-0 when their top defender Tyler Sekerak has scored 13 or more points.

Steve Bankson is Fourth All-Time in the OAC With 408 Coaching Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 408 victories and has a 408-312 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 689 career wins in 43 years overall and a 689-425 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
