No.3 Seed Baldwin-Wallace Men Defeat No. 6 Heidelberg, 95-82, in Berea to Advance to OAC Final Four

BEREA, OHIO —Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) scored 30 points  and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds as the number three-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated sixth-seeded Heidelberg College, 95-82, in a first round Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament game tonight (Wednesday, February 21, 2007) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. B-W advances to play No.2-seed and cross-town rival John Carroll University in the OAC Final Four this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24 at second-seeded Capital University at 6:00 p.m.

With its win, B-W is now 18-8 overall and has won 18 or more games in each of the last four years.  With its loss, Heidelberg ends its season at 13-13.

In addition to Davis for the Yellow Jackets, junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) scored 16 points, sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckely/Medina Highland) had 14, junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa.) had 12 and freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/Senior) had 11. Junior forward Andrew Lemmon led the Heidelberg with 21 points. In addition, junior guard Shawn Shriver had 13 points, junior guard Greg Tyson had 11 and senior center Ron Higgins had 10 each.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 10-3 lead at the 16:51 mark when Bene scored on a layup. The Student Princes then outscored B-W 18-11 to get to within two points at 21-19 at the 9:34 mark when sophomore guard Chad Szalay made a jump shot. B-W then outscored Heidelberg 25-16 to build its largest lead of the stanza at 46-35 with 1:18 left when Schuler made two foul shots. B-W also led at halftime, 48-37.

In the second half, Heidelberg opened with a 9-2 run to get to within four points at 50-46 with 17:30 left when Lemmon made a jumper. B-W then outscored the Student Princes 25-10 to build its largest lead of the game at 19 points at 75-56 with 6:34 left when Bene scored on a layup. The closest Heidelberg would get after that point was 12 points with 2:50 left.

With his 30 points, Davis remains seventh on the all-time OAC scoring list with 2,217 points. Davis also has 933 career rebounds to rank fifth and is B-W’s all-time leading shot blocker with 240.

Friday's two semifinal winners meet in the 2007 OAC Championship Game is on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Capital plays No.5-seed Otterbein College at 8:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m. The winner of this game will advance to the OAC Final Four at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner will play the winner of the second-seeded John Carroll University versus Wilmington College game on Friday, Feb. 23 at 5:00 p.m. The OAC Championship game is on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its fifth straight game and advance to the Final Four of the OAC Tournament for the third straight year when it hosts Heidelberg College in a first round OAC Tournament game in Berea. The Yellow Jackets are seeking their third straight OAC Tournament title.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-8 overall record and ended the OAC regular season with a 12-6 mark following their 74-68 victory at Marietta College last Saturday (Feb. 17). B-W has won four straight games.

The Student Princes enter this game at 13-12 overall and ended the OAC regular season at 9-9 following their 78- 66 loss at Muskingum College last Saturday in New Concord. Heidelberg has lost four straight.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg-- This is the 99th all-time meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in men’s basketball. B-W leads the series between the two schools, 60-38, and split the season series this season with the home team winning each game. Heidelberg won the first game, on January 17 in Tiffin by the score of 75-72. B-W won the second game, on Jan. 31 in Berea by the score of 93-80.

The Second Meeting This Season on January 31, 2007 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 93, Heidelberg -- 80-- In thesecond meeting this season between B-W and Heidelberg, on January 31, 2007 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Student Princes, 93-80. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 6'3" senior All- American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) with a game-high 25 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. In addition, 5'11" junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 20 points and five assists, 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark) had 15 points and seven rebounds and 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) came off the bench to score 12 points. The duo of 6'0" junior guard Shawn Shriver and 6'5" junior forward Andrew Lemmon each had 23 points to lead Heidelberg.

The First Meeting This Season on January 17, 2007 in Tiffin: Heidelberg -- 75, Baldwin-Wallace -- 72-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Heidelberg, on January 17, 2007 in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, the Student Princes defeated the Yellow Jackets, 75-72. Leading the way for Heidelberg was Shawn Shriver with 23 points. In addition to Shriver, 6'0" sophomore guard Chad Szaley and 6'6" junior center Brian Schmidt each had 13 points. Szalay made a 17-foot jumper with 1.92 seconds remaining to win the game Tori Davis led B-W with a game-high 24 points.  In addition, Chad Clark came off the bench to score 14 points and Brendan Schuler had 11.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.4 points per game and give up 73.2 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.2 ppg. B-W is grabbing 35.8 rebounds per contest, 5.8 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 48.8 percent from the field, 38.7 percent from three-point range and 76.0 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start 6'3" All-American senior forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian) and 6'6" sophomore Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" junior wing Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa), 5'11" junior point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) and 5'11" sophomore wing Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to start. Davis tops the team in scoring at 22.4 points per game, in rebounding with 8.7 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.2 percent on 193-of-296 attempts and with 56 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.9 ppg, grabs 3.7 rpg. and tops the team with 140 assists, shoots a team-leading 92.2 percent (71-of-77) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 54 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 6.5 ppg., is second with 5.4 rpg., shoots 47.4 percent (65-of-137) from the floor and 75.0 percent (33-of-44) from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 10.9 ppg., grabs 3.5 rpg. and is second on the team with 41three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.9 ppg.,has 21 triples and is tied with Santiago for third in steals with 20.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name), 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Clark leads the "Bench Bunch" with 6.9 ppg. and 3.4 rpg. Tumblin scores 5.9 ppg. and is third on the team with 22 three-pointers. Jesko scores 3.6 ppg. and has 18 triples.  Glass averages 1.4 ppg, and is 4-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Mong scores 1.0 ppg. and grabs 1.1 rpg.

Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Information-- The Student Princes score 76.1 points per game and give up 72.3 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 3.9 ppg. Heidelberg is grabbing 36.4 rebounds per contest,2.4 more per game than its opponents. Heidelberg shoots 46.7 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from three-point range and 67.2 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 6'0" junior guard Shawn Shriver and 6'2" junior guard Matt Eberle in the backcourt and 6'5" junior guard Greg Tyson, Jr. and 6'5" junior forward Andrew Lemmon on the wings and 6'9" senior center Ron Higgins in the post. There also is a chance that 6'6" junior forward Brian Schmidt could return for this game. He started 18-of-the-first-19 games before missing the last six games due to illness.

Tyson Jr. scores 7.3 ppg., grabs 4.8 rpg., shoots 52.7 percent from the floor and has 44 assists, 20 steals and 17 blocked shots. Shriver tops HC in scoring at 13.7 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., has a team-leading 54 three-pointers and has 55 assists and 25 steals. Eberle scores 3.1 ppg. and tops the team with 61 assists. Lemmon scores 11.8 ppg., grabs a teamleading 7.0 rpg., shoots 52.2 percent from the floor, 81 percent from the foul line and is second with 49 triples. Higgins, who has been starting for Schmidt, scores 11.0 ppg., grabs 6.3 rpg., shoots 53.4 percent from the floor and tops HC with 23 blocked shots. Prior to his illness, Schmidt scored 12.5 ppg., grabbed 6.7 rpg., shot 67.1 percent from the floor but just 35.9 percent from the foul line.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" sharpshooting sophomore guard Chad Szalay, Higgins or maybe Schmidt, 6'1" freshman guard Josh Calver, and 5'11" sophomore guard Jake Hessey to all see action. Szalay scores 12.4 ppg. and has 44 threepointers and 43 assists. Calver scores 3.3 ppg. and is second with third with 52 assists. Hessey scores 2.8 ppg. and has 15 three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Marietta College on Feb. 17 in Marietta, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 74, Marietta --68-- In B-W's last game, a 74-68 Yellow Jacket victory at Marietta College last Saturday (Feb. 17), the Yellow Jackets were led my senior Tori Davis' 22 points and eight rebounds. Also contributing was Brendan Schuler with 16 points and three steals and Dennis Santiago with 12 points.

In Heidelberg's Last Game Versus Muskingum College on Feb. 17 in New Concord, Ohio: Muskingum -- 78, Heidelberg --66-- In Heidelberg's last game, a 78-66 loss at Muskingum last Saturday (Feb. 17) in New Concord, the Student Princes were led in scoring by Chad Szalay with 13 points. Also scoring double figures were Brian Schmidt with 12 points, Shawn Shriver and Ron Higgins with 11 each and Andrew Lemmon with 10. Heidelberg shot just four-of-23 from three-point range.

OAC Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets have captured the past two OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Overall, B-W has won five OAC Tournament titles (1967, 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006).

Current OAC Standings and OAC Tournament Seeding-- Capital University and John Carroll University tied for the OAC regular season title at 13-5 in league play. Capital won the tie-breaker and is the number one seed and JCU is No.2. B-W and Ohio Northern University both finished 12-6 to tie for third place and B-W is the No.3 seed and ONU is No.4. Otterbein College beat Capital on Saturday to earn the No.5 seed at 11-7. Heidelberg College (9-9) is No. 6 and Wilmington College (8-10) is No. 7. Muskingum (6-12), by virtue of its win versus Heidelberg on Saturday, is No. 8. Mt. Union (5-13) and Marietta College (1-17) were eliminated from tournament consideration.

Tori Davis Has 2,187 Career Points and is First at B-W and Seventh in OAC History -- Tori Davis is B-W's all-time leading scorer with 2,187 career points and stands seventh all-time in OAC history. In addition, Davis is fifth all-time at B-W in rebounding with 923 and is the school record-holder with 239 blocked shots.

When Sekerak Scores 13 or More -- When Tyler Sekerak has scored 13 or more points the past two years, B-W wins. The Yellow Jackets are 10-0 when B-W's top defender scores 13 or more points.

Steve Bankson is Fourth All-Time in the OAC With 407 Coaching Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 407 victories and has a 407-312 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 688 career wins in 43 years overall and a 688-425 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
