Baldwin-Wallace Men's Basketball Team Falls to Muskingum College, 97-91, in Overtime in New Concord

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard Brandon Todd scored a game-high 34 points and passed for 12 assists as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team was defeated by Muskingum College, 97-91, in overtime today (Saturday, January 12. 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Muskingum Recreation Center in New Concord.
 
With its loss, B-W falls to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.  With its win, Muskingum improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 17:44 mark when Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) made a jump shot.  B-W extended its lead to 17 points at 37-20 at the 4:44 mark when junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Highland) made two free throws.  The Yellow Jackets, who made 60 percent of their first half field goals and all nine of their free throws, led at halftime, 48-35.
 
In the second half, the Fighting Muskies opened with a 23-12 run to cut B-W's lead to two points at the 9:01 mark when junior forward Tyler Felt hit a three pointer.  The Yellow-Jacket then outscored the Fighting Muskies 10-2 to rebuild their lead to 10 points at 70-60 with 6:34 left when sophmore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) made a three pointer.  B-W led by eight points at 79-71 with 58 seconds left when Muskingum went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 81-81 with 17 seconds left when Todd made a lay-up.  B-W had a chance to win the game in regulation but a Schuler jumper was off the mark.
 
In the overtime, Muskingum took its first lead of the game at 83-81 with 4:35 left when sophmore guard Pat Byrne made a lay-up.  B-W then scored the next seven points to lead 88-83 with 3:26 when a Schuler made two free throws.  Muskingum outscored B-W 9-3 to take the lead for good at 92-91, with 53 seconds left when sophmore guard Cory Bourquin made a three pointer.  Following a B-W turnover, Bourquin sealed the game for the Fighting Muskies with his second straight three pointer, and Felt hit two free throws with three seconds left to finish the scoring.
 
In addition to Todd, Felt had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Byrne had 11 points.  For the Yellow Jackets, Tumblin had career-highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds, Bene had his second straight double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Schuler also had a double-double with 17 points and 13 assists and Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) came off the bench to score 10 points 
 
B-W will next play on Wednesday, January 16 when it travels to University Heights to play OAC and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. The next Yellow Jacket home game is on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #13 at Muskingum College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to New Concord, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College on Saturday, January 12, 2008 in the Muskingum College Recreation Center at 3:00 p.m. This is the sixth OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the first of two regular season meetings versus the Fighting Muskies.

     

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak this season to two straight games as the Yellow Jackets travel to New Concord to play the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum College. B-W also has beaten Muskingum four straight times over the past two seasons.

B-W comes into this game with a 5-7 overall and 2-3 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 93-87 overtime win against Otterbein College on January 9 in Berea. B-W has won two of its lat three games.

Muskingum enters today's contests with a 7-3 overall and 3-2 OAC record following its 86-73 win versus Marietta College on January 9 in Marietta. Muskingum also has won two of its last three games.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Muskingum -- This is the 88th meeting between B-W and Muskingum in men's basketball. The Fighting Muskies lead the series, 49-38, but B-W has won the last four meetings, including both games a year ago. In the first meeting, on Jan. 6, 2007 in New Concord, B-W won, 74-61. In the second meeting, on Feb. 10 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets won, 76-66. The last Muskie win came on February 12, 2005 by a score of 65-62 in Berea.

B-W was led by 2-time All-American Tori Davis and current 6' 0" senior 2-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) with 14 points, current 5' 11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) with 12 points and current 6' 6" junior forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with 10 points. The Muskies top scorer was current 6'0" sophomore guard Trevor Scott with 20 points.

In Last Year's Second B-W vs. Muskingum Game in Berea: B-W -- 76, Muskingum -- 66 -- In the second matchup between B-W and Muskingum, on Feb. 10 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets beat the Fighting Muskies, 76-66, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. B-W was led by Tori Davis with 23 points, Brendan Schuler had 17 points and current 6'1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had 16 points. The Fighting Muskies were led by current 6'1" sophomore guard Cory Bourqin with 23 points, current 5'7" senior All-OAC guard Brandon Todd with 13 points and current 6'2" sophomore guard Pat Byrne with 11 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 79.9 points per game and allows 82.1 ppg. for a minus 2.2 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46 percent (342-of-741) from the field, including 39 percent (106-of-269) from three-point range, and 71percent (169-of-238) from the free throw line. They average 33.6 rpg. and give up 38.1 rpg. for a minus 4.5 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start.  Brown tops the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg., is second with 5.0 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers (32) and overall field goals (72). Schuler is second in scoring at 16.7 ppg., leads the team in assists with 60. He also leads the team in field goal shooting at 56.6% on 69-of-122 attempts, including 51.9 percent from three-point range on 27-of-52 attempts. Bene is third in scoring at 11.3 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.5 rpg. and in blocked shots with 24. Sekerak averages 9.2 ppg., leads the team and OAC in steals with 33, is second with 29 assists and third with 3.6rpg. Tumblin averages 9.8 ppg. and 3.6 rpg., and is third with 20 assists.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Dennis Santiago, 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview),6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/Sandy Valley), 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6' 5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/Coffman) to all possibly see action. Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.8 ppg. and 13 three-pointers.

In the B-W's Last Game on Jan. 9 versus Otterbein College: B-W -- 93, Otterbein-- 87-- In B-W's last game, an 93-87 overtime win against Otterbein College on Jan. 9, the Yellow Jackets were led by Louis Tumblin with 21 points and six rebounds. He was one of six players to score in double figures. In addition, Brenden Schuler had 16 points and six rebounds, Andrew Bene scored 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, Tyler Sekerak scored12 points, Dennis Santiago came off the bench to score 12 points and Kyle Brown had 11 points. B-W came back from a 15-point second half deficit to tie the game in regulation and force overtime. In the O.T., Schuler canned a key three-pointer with one second left on the shot clock and 27.4 seconds on the game clock and then scored his 1,000th career point on a foul shot with seven seconds left. Also, Head Coach Steve Bankson moved into third place on the all-time OAC win list for coaches with his 413th win.

Muskingum Information and Probable Starters -- Muskingum scores 70.4 ppg. and allows 65.1 ppg. for a plus 5.3 ppg. differential. The Muskies shoot 46 percent (247-of-541) from the field, including 34 percent (62-of-183) from three-point range, and 69 percent (148-of-215) from the free throw line. Muskingum also grabs 31.7 rpg. and gives up 33.5 rpg. for a minus 1.8 rpg. differential.

Look for first-year collegiate Head Coach Gene Ford to start Pat Byrne, Brandon Todd and 6'1" senior Jeremy Ady at guard. On the inside, Ford is likely to start 6'6" junior transfer Tyler Felt at forward and 6'5" sophomore transfer Nick Hershberger at center. Felt leads the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg., rebounding with 5.7 rpg. and is tied for first in three-pointers with 11. He also shoots 55.8% from the field on 48-of-86 attempts. Todd is tied for second in scoring with 11.1 ppg. and third in rebounds with 3.7 rpg., He also tops the team with 60 assists and 15 steals. Byrne is tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg. and is second on the team in rebounds with 4.7 rpg. Ady scores 7.7 ppg. and is tied for second in steals with 11. Hershberger scores 7.2 ppg. and grabs 3.6 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Ford to utilize Trevor Scott, 6'1" sophomore guard Cory Borquin, 6'8" junior transfer center Ben Miller and 6'5" senior forward Andy Glass, who is the brother of B-W sophomore forward Paul Glass. Scott is the top scorer off the bench and tallies 8.2 ppg., grabs 2.6 rpg. and has 10 three-pointers.

In the Fighting Muskies Last Game on Jan. 9 versus Marietta College in Marietta: Muskingum -- 86, Marietta -- 73 -- In Muskingums last game, a 86-73 win at Marietta on Jan. 9 in the The Ban Johnson Arena, the Muskies were led by Pat Byrne with 16 points and and seven rebounds. In addition, Tyler Felt, Brandon Todd and Trevor Scott each scored 13 points. Keys to the victory included outrebounding Marietta, 41-32, forcing the Pioneers into making 11 turnovers and outscoring Marietta from the foul line, 18-9.

Brendan Schuler Scores 1,000 Points -- Brendan Schuler scored his 1,000th career point in B-W's 93-87 overtime win against Otterbein. Schuler is the 35th Yellow Jacket to reach the 1,000-point plateau and the 1,000-Point Club. In addition, Schuler stands fifth all-time in assists with 398 and 10th in three pointers with 165.

Bankson Now Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 413th career game at B-W and in the Ohio Athletic Conference when B-W beat Otterbein in O.T. The win moved Bankson ahead of the legendary Mose Hole of Wooster and into third place on the all-time OAC Coaching Win List.  In addition, Bankson needs six more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 413-320 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 694 career wins in 44 years overall and a 694-434 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
