BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore Forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored a game-high 26 points tonight (Wednesday, January 30, 2008) as Baldwin-Wallace College defeated Mount Union College, 81-72, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Timken PE Building in Alliance
With its win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in the OAC, and beat the Purple Raiders twice this season. With its loss, Mount Union dropped to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in the OAC.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the 16:46 mark when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) made a three pointer. Later Mount Union came within four points at 12-8. B-W went on an 8-2 run to build its largest lead of the half of ten points at 20-10 with 12:32 left when Brown made a jumper. Then Mount Union went on a 9-3 run, to get within three points at 22-19 with 10:01 left when freshman guard Dave Reichlin made a three pointer. B-W then built back its lead to eight points on two occasions with the last being at 35-27 with 4:25 left when senior two time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) made a layup. B-W also led at halftime 37-30.
In the second half, B-W rebuilt its lead to ten points at 47-37 with 15:17 left when sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior) made a jump shot. The Purple Raiders then went on a 17-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at seven points with 11:57 left when sophomore guard Sam King made two free throws. B-W then outscored Mount Union 9-2 to tie the game at 56-56 with 7:48 left when Brown made a jump shot. The game was tied again at 58-58 before Mount Union gained a 59-58 lead with 6:45 left when freshman forward David Pellerite made a free throw. Seven straight points by junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) gave B-W a 65-59 lead with 5:35 left. Mount Union's junior guard Chris Switzer made back-to-back three pointers to tie the game at 65-65. Switzer then made three free throws to give Mount Union its final lead at 68-65 with 4:20 left. After it was tied at 70-70, B-W gained the lead for good when junior post Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw for a 73-70 lead with 2:36 left. The closest Mount Union would get was 75-72 when Switzer made a layup with 1:42 left. The Yellow Jackets then made their final six free throws to close out the scoring.
In addition to Brown, Bene scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high-tying 10 rebounds and Santiago had 12 points. For Mount Union, sophomore center Chris Crawford led the Purple Raiders with a career-high-tying 22 points and a game-high-tying 10 rebounds. In addition, Switzer had 18 points and Pellerite had 14.
B-W will return to action on Saturday, February 2 when it hosts Ohio Northern University at 3:00 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Prior to the varsity game, B-W will celebrate Alumni Basketball Day and its annual Alumni Game at 1:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Alliance, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 in the Timken PE Building at 7:30 p.m. This is the 11th OAC regular season game for each team and the second of two meetings this season between the Yellow Jackets and Purple Raiders.

The Yellow Jackets currently stand in ninth place in the OAC Standings and are one game back of both Otterbein College and Mt. Union. The top eight teams make the season-ending OAC Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-12 overal and 2-8 OAC record following a 77-71 loss to first place Capital University last Saturday, January 26 in Berea. The loss was a season-high fifth straight for B-W.
The Purple Raiders enter this game with a 6-11 overall and 3-7 OAC record following a 72-60 loss to Muskingum College in New Concord last Saturday, Jan. 26. Mt. Union has won three of its last four games.
The All-Time Series Between B-W and Mount Union-- This is the 119th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 75-43, including nine straight wins against the Purple Raiders, including a 65-63 victory earlier this season in Berea on December 5, 2007. The last Purple Raider win came on February 25, 2004 when the Raiders upset B-W, 80-74, in the first round of the OAC Tournament in Berea.

Brown is the leading scorer at 17.5 ppg. He also grabs 4.6 rpg. and leads the team with 41 three-pointers. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.6 ppg. with a team-leading 99 assists. He also is second in three-pointers with 35 and steals with 24. Sekerak scores 8.0 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., has a team-high 42 steals and is second with 38 assists. Bene scores 13.1 ppg., leads the team with 7.1 rpg. and 33 blocked shots and shoots 52 percent from the floor (84-of-161). Tumblin scores 11.1 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg. and is third with 20 three-pointers and 32 assists.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 5'11" junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), 5'11 freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5 ' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley), 6'2" sophomore Paul Glass (Medina Senior) and 6'5" freshman Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman). In B-W's Last Game versus Capital in Berea on Jan. 26: Baldwin-Wallace -- 71, Capital -- 77 -- In B-W's last game, a 77-71 loss versus Capital University on January 26 in the Ursprung Gym in Berea, Kyle Brown had a game-high 20 points and six rebounds in the loss. In addition, Andrew Bene added 16 points and six rebounds, Dennis Santiago added 12 points and guard Louis Tumblin scored 11 points. The loss was B-W's fifth straight loss.
Mount Union College Probable Starters and Information-- Mount Union averages 71.8 ppg. and gives up 73.6 ppg. for a minus 1.8 ppg. differential. The Purple Raiders shoot 45.2 percent from the field (457-of-1010), 30.3% from three-point range (84-of-277) and 63.4% from the foul line (222-of-350).
Look for veteran Head Coach Lee Hood to start 5'11" sophomore Sam King at the point guard and for 6'0" junior Chris Switzer and 6'3" senior Mike Fatigante to also start in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 6'3" freshman wing Dave Pellerite and 6'4" junior Jay Mathias to start. Switzer tops the team in scoring at 16.3 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg. and has the most three-pointers with 31. He also has 27 assists and 20 steals. King scores 10.1 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 86 assists and 26 steals. Fatigante scores 4.9 ppg. and 3.9 rpg. and also has 29 assists and 25 steals. Pellerite is second in scoring at 11.9 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg., is second with 18 three-pointers and 44 assists. Mathias scores 9.5 ppg., grabs a team-leading 6.3 rpg. and is second with 12 blocked shots.
Off the bench look for Hood to play 6'7" sophomore forward Chris Crawford, 6'3" freshman guard Dave Reichlin, 6'1" freshman guard Tyler Knoff, 6'9" sophomore center Steven Shepherd and 6'6" freshman forward Andrew Hofener as well as possibly 6'1" junior guard Luke Conley. Crawford is third in scoring at 10.2 ppg. and rebounding with 4.4 rpg., shoots 60.9 percent from the floor (78-of-129) and leads the team with 19 blocked shots.
In the Purple Radiers Last Game versus Muskingum in New Concord on Jan. 26: Muskingum -- 72, Mt. Union -- 60 -- In Mt. Union's last game, a 72-60 loss to Muskingum College last Saturday (Jan. 26) in New Concord, the Purple Raiders were led in scoring by Sam King and Chris Switzer with 16 points each. In addition, Jay Mathis added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Brendan Schuler Enters The Top 30 in B-W All-Time Scoring -- In Saturday's 77-71 loss to Capital University, Brendan Schuler scored three points in limited action to give him 1,066 career points and stayed in 29th place on the all-time scoring list. He recently passed Kenn Kaminski (1987-91), who scored 1,059 points in his career. Up next in 28th place is Ryan Sooy (1993-97), who had 1,072 career points; then Brian Newland (1987-91), who had 1,076 points, and is 27th. Schuler is 34 popints shy of 1,100 points and the Top-23 all-time scorers. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 437 and is now ninth in three pointers with 173.
Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs six more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. Bankson also has 694 career wins in 44 years overall and a 694-439 mark. In addition, Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 413 victories. He has a 413-325 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W and in the OAC.
Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director, is a member of three halls-of-fame and received a national leadership award at last year's NABC National Convention.
