Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Defeats Mount Union College, 65-63, in its OAC Opener

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) made two foul shots with 7.57 seconds left in the game and  scored a game-high 16 points and the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Mount Union College, 65-63, tonight (Wednesday, December 5, 2007) at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. This was the OAC opener for B-W.
 
With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-3 overall, 1-0 in the OAC and have now beaten the Purple Raiders nine straight times dating back to 2004. Mt. Union fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Purple Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead and extended the lead to 15 points at 31-16 with 2:47 left when freshman guard Dave Pellerite made a three-point shot. The Yellow Jackets then scored the final nine points of the stanza, including a layup by Schuler with 40 seconds left to close to within 31-25 at halftime.      
 
In the second half, Mt. Union rebuilt its lead to eight points at 43-35 with 15:17 left when sophomore guard Sam King made a jump shot. The Yellow Jackets then scored the next eight points to tie the game at 43-43 with 13:46 left when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made a three-pointer. B-W gained its first lead of the game when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a three-pointer at the 12:49 mark.
 
Following five lead changes and four ties, B-W gained a 62-61 lead with 1:44 left when Schuler made a three-pointer. The Purple Raiders regauined the lead with 12.65 seconds left when sophomore forward Chris Crawford made a difficult jumper in the lane. That set up Schuler's two foul shots for the lead and junior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Highland) added the final point of the game on a foul shot with 0.36 seconds remaining. Mt. Union had one last desperate shot that fell well short of the rim.
 
In addition to Schuler's 16 points, Brown had 14, Sekerak 13 and sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) added 11. Mt. Union was led by Crawford's 12 points and King and junior guard Chris Switzer had 11 each.

Game Notes #6 HOST Mount Union College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, December 5 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. This is the first OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets. 

     

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game, even its overall record and begin its 2007-2008 Ohio Athletic Conference regular season on a positive note when it hosts OAC arch-rival Mount Union College.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game and the OAC regular season with a 2-3 overall record following an 95-82 victory over Cleveland cross-town- and traditional-rival Case Western Reserve University last Thursday (Nov. 29) in Berea. The win ended a three-game losing streak.

The Purple Raiders enter this game with a 2-3 overall and 0-1 OAC record following a 67-62 loss to Muskingum College in Alliance last Saturday. Overall, Mt. Union has lost three of its last four games.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Mount Union-- This is the 118th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 74-43, including an 84-66 victory in the last meeting in Alliance on January 24, 2007. B-W has won eight straight games against Mt. Union. The last Purple Raider win came on February 25, 2004 when it upset B-W by an 80-74 count in the first round of the OAC Tournament.

In the Last B-W versus Mt. Union Game of 2006-2007: B-W -- 84, Mt. Union 66 -- In the last B-W versus Mt. Union game of the 2006-2007 season, on January 24, 2007, B-W won its eighth consecutive game against the Purple Raiders and prevailed in Alliance, 84-66. Current junior 5'11" Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) scored 20 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. In addition, graduated 2-time Division III All-American and OAC Player of the Year Tori Davis scored 18 points and became the 11th player in the history of the OAC to top the 2,000- point plateau in men’s basketball. Also, current 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 17 points. Current junior guard Chris Switzer led Mt. Union with 16 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- After five games, Baldwin-Wallace College averages 81.8 points per game and allows 83.2 ppg. for a -1.4 point-per-game differential. B-W shoots 48.8 percent (143-of-293) from the field, 43.9 percent (47-of-107) from three-point range, and 72.4 percent (76-of-105) from the free throw line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Dennis Santiago and 5'11" two-time All-OAC point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) to start. Through the first five games this season, four of the five starts are averaging double-digit points per game. Brown is the leading scorer at 20.6 ppg. He also grabs 4.2 rebounds-per-game and leads the team with 16 threepointers. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.2 ppg. with a team-leading 27 assists and seven steals. Sekerak scores 11.6 ppg., has a team-high 13 steals, is second with 15 assists and leads the team by shooting 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from the field, including 53.8 percent (seven-of-13) from three-point range. Bene scores 11.4 ppg., leads the team with 8.0 rpg. and nine blocked shots aand shoots 55.3 percent from the floor (21-of-38). Santiago scores 9.6 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 5'11 freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5 ' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley), 6'2" sophomore Paul Glass (Medina Senior) and 6'5" freshman Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman). Tumblin is scoring 4.2 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Case Western Reserve in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 95, CWRU -- 82 -- In B-W's last game, a 95-82 victory against Case Western Reserve University on November 29 in the Ursprung Gym in Berea, Dennis Santiago scored a game and career-high 27 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to victory. In addition to Santiago, the other four starters all scored in double figures as Kyle Brown had 18 points, Brendan Schuler and Andrew Bene (each had 16 and Tyler Sekerak had 14.

Mount Union College Probable Starters and Information-- Mount Union averages 78.4 ppg. and gives up 73.2 ppg. for a +5.2 ppg. differential. The Purple Raiders shoot 46 percent from the field (144-of-313), 40.8% from three-point range (31-of-76) and 64% from the foul line (73-of-114).

Look for veteran Head Coach Lee Hood to start 5'11" sophomore Sam King or 6'1" freshman Tyler Knoff at the point guard. Also look for 6'0" junior Chris Switzer and 6'3" senior Mike Fatigante to start in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 6'7" sophomore post player Chris Crawford and 6'4" junior Jay Mathias to start. Switzer tops the team in scoring at 17.5 ppg., grabs 3.3 rpg. and has the most three-pointers with eight. King scores 8.6 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and tops the team with 25 assists and eight steals. Knoff started his first career game last Saturday and scores 0.8 ppg. Fatigante scores5.8 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg. Crawford is second in scoring at 11.4 ppg., tops the team with 5.6 rpg. and shoots 54.3 percent from the floor (25-of-46). Mathias scores 10.0 ppg., grabs 4.8 rpg. and also shoots 54.3 percent from the floor (19-of-35).

Off the bench look for Hood to play 6'3" freshman wing Dave Pellerite, 6'3" freshman guard Dave Reichlin, 6'9" sophomore center Steven Shepherd and 6'6" freshman forward Andrew Hofener as well as possibly 6'1" junior guard Luke Conley. Pellerite leads the "bench bunch" with 10.4 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.

In the Purple Radiers Last Game vs. Muskingum in Alliance: Muskingum -- 67, Mt. Union -- 62 -- In Mt. Union's last game, a 67-62 loss to Muskingum College last Saturday (Dec. 1) in Alliance, the Purple Raiders were led in scoring by Chris Switzer with 23 points and Chris Crawford had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Yellow Jackets Picked Fifth in OAC Preseason Poll -- The Yellow Jackets were picked by the Ohio Athletic Conference coaches to finish fifth in the OAC preseason poll. B-W received 52 points and trailed fourth place Ohio Northern University by one point. Defending OAC regular season and OAC Tournament champ Capital University was the favorite and received eight of 10 first place votes and 80 points. Heidelberg College got one first place vote and had 61 points and John Carroll University had one first place vote and 60 points.

Steve Bankson is Fourth All-Time in the OAC With 410 Coaching Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 400 victories and has a 410-316 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 691 career wins in 44 years overall and a 691-430 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
