
Bankson Wins His 700th Career Game
With its win, the B-W improved to 11-14 overall and ended the OAC regular season at 8-10. The victory also was B-W's third straight and its sixth in its last eight contests. With its loss, the Marietta dropped to 6-19 overall and 2-16 in the OAC. B-W will open 2008 OAC Tournament play next Wednesday, Feb. 24 at a site and against an opponent yet to be determined. Marietta does not qualify for the eight-team tournament. The winner of the OAC tourney receives an automatic berth in the 2008 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 19:42 mark when Bene made a layup. B-W increased its lead to 11-5 at the 16:44 mark when Bene made a jump shot. B-W increased its lead to 12 points at 23-11 at the 9:59 mark when freshman guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) made a three-pointer. B-W had its largest lead of the first half at 21 points at 39-18 at the 3:01 mark when senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) made a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 39-24.
In the second half, B-W regained its 18 point advantage at 42-24 with 18:38 when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw. The Pioneers then went on a 9-5 run to close to within 14 points at 47-33 with 16:17 left when senior center Adam Rockhold made a jump shot. Undaunted, B-W went on a 11-2 run to build a 23-point lead at 58-35 with 13:04 left when Schuler made a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets then built their lead to a game-high 29 points at the 75-46 mark when with 7:11 left when sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) made a layup. B-W then both coasted to victory and Bankson earned his 700th win.
In addition to Bene for B-W, sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) had 14 points, junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had 14 points and Cayton had 10. The Pioneers were led by Rockhold with a game-highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds and was joined in double figures by freshman guard Nathan Edick with 10 points.
Winners from next Wednesday's (Feb. 24) OAC quarterfinal games qualify for the OAC Final Four on Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1 at the site of the highest remaining seeded team. Game times on Friday are at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., respectively, and the 2008 OAC Championship Game is on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Marietta, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College on Saturday, February 23, 2008 in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m. This is the 18th OAC regular season game and the second of two meetings versus the Pioneers.

Pre-game Setup -- The B-W men's basketball team will look to end its regular season on a three-game winning streak and give veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson his 700th career victory when it travels to Mariertta to play OAC rival Marietta College in the OAC regular season finale. The 2008 OAC Tournament begins next Wednesday, February 27.
B-W comes into this game with a 10-14 overall and 7-10 OAC record following an 81-70 win against John Carroll University on Wednesday, February 20 in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won five of their last seven games.
Marietta enters the game with an 6-18 overall and 2-15 OAC record following its 72-51 loss versus Mount Union College on Feb. 20 in Alliance. The Pioneers have lost six straight games and eight of their last nine overall. Marietta will not qualify for the final eight-team OAC Tournament.
The All-Time Series Between B-W and Marietta-- This is the 75th all-time meeting between B-W and Marietta in men's basketball. B-W has a 48-26 advantage in the series, but the Pioneers won the first meeting this season, 86-82, on January 19, 2008 in Berea. B-W's last win against the Pioneers came on Feb. 17, 2007 in Marietta by a 74-68 score.

Leading all scorers was Pioneer 6'0" junior guard Isaiah Creasap with 26 points, including four three-pointers. Also for MC, 6'7" senior center Adam Rockhold scored 21 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, 6'7" junior forward Daun Lutes had 15 points and seven caroms and 5'10" freshman guard Jordan Cox with 10 points. For B-W, 5'11" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) led the way and scored 21 points and passed for eight assists. In addition, 6'4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) came off the bench to score 16 points, 6'2" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. The key to the Pioneer win was outrebounding B-W, 40-32, connecting on 56.9 percent of their field goal attempts (33-of-58), including eight-of-16 three-pointers..
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.7 points per game and allows 82.0 ppg. for a minus 1.3 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.9 percent (695-of-1482) from the field, including 37.8 percent (189-of-500 from three-point range, and 75.3 percent (357-of-474) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 33.8 rpg. and give up 36.9 rpg. for a minus 3.1 rpg. differential.
Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and Kyle Brown on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area),Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg., is third with 4.4 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 60. Schuler is second in scoring at 14.2 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., leads the team in assists with 137 and is second with 42 three-pointers and 32 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 13.1 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.2 rpg. and in blocked shots with 39. Tumblin is fourth with 12.5 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg., and is third with 32 three-pointers and 41 assists. Sekerak averages 7.9 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., is second on the team with 56 assists and leads the team with 52 steals.

Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.8 ppg. and has 23 three-pointers. Glass scores 5.3 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg.

The win was B-W's second straight and the 699th in the career of Head Coach Steve Bankson. In addition for B-W, Andrew Bene had 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots, Louis Tumblin had 12 points, Tyler Sekerak had 11 points and Brendan Schuler had eight points, eight assists and five rebounds. A key to the win was outrebounding the much taller Blue Streaks, 48-34.
Marietta Information and Probable Starters -- Marietta scores 69.9 ppg. and allows 84.0 ppg. for a minus 14.1 ppg. differential. The Pioneers shoot 42.9 percent (615-of-1432) from the field, including 38.1% (211-of-554) from three-point range, and 64.4% from the free throw line (237-of-368). Marietta grabs 35.6 rpg. and allows 38.9 to its opponents for a minus 3.3 rpg. differential.
Look for first-year Head Coach John VanderWal to start Isaiah Cresap and Jordan Cox in the backcourt, 6'3" junior forward Matt Kubachka on the wing and Daun Lutes and Adam Rockhold on the inside. Cresap tops the Pioneers in scoring at 14.8 ppg. He also has 66 three-pointers and 51 assists. Cox scores 10.1 ppg. with 49 triples and a team-leading 68 assists. Kubachka has played in 18 games, including six starts, and scores 4.4 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg. He also has 22 blocked shots for 1.3 bpg. Lutes scores 8.1 ppg. and grabs 5.3 rpg. He also shoots 52.7% from the floor. Rockhold is second in scoring at 12.8 ppg. and first with 10.2 rpg. and 26 blocked shots.
Off the bench, look for Coach Vander Wol to play 5'9" freshman guard Nathan Edick, 5'10" junior guard Mike Stanek, 6'0" freshman guard Jay Chadwell, 6'1" freshman guard Blaine Carey and 6'3" freshman forward Bradley Hinton. Edick is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.5 ppg. and is second with 61 three-pointers.
In the Pioneers Last Game on Feb. 20 at Mount Union College in Alliance: Mount Union -- 72, Marietta -- 51-- In Marietta's last game, a 72-51 loss on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Mount Union College in Alliance, the Pioneers were led by Nathan Edick off the bench with 17 points and five three-pointers. In addition, Adam Rockhold had 15 points and eight rebounds. The keys to the loss were shooting just 39.6% from the field (19-of-48), committing 17 turnovers and being outrebounded, 42-29.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Has 699 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson looks to win his 700th career game when the Jackets play at Marietta.
Bankson enters the game with 699 career wins and a 699-441 record in 44 years as a head coach at the Division III, junior college and high school levels. Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W with 418 victories and a 418-327 mark in 28 seasons in Berea. Bankson previously had a 232-90 record in 12 seasons at Lorain (Ohio) County Community College from 1968-80 and had a 49-24 slate in three seasons as a high school coach in both Indiana and then Michigan. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
Brendan Schuler 21st All-Time in Scoring -- In Wednesday's 81-70 win against JCU, Brendan Schuler scored eight points to give him 1,141 career points and he surpassed Keith Aufmuth (2002-2006) for 20th on the all-time scoring list. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 475 and seventh in three pointers with 180.
Dennis Santiago is an Academic All-OAC Candidate -- A year ago, Dennis Santiago earned Academic All-OAC accolades for his efforts on the basketball court. The political scienece major who carries a 3.27 grade average is a candidate again this season.
