BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored 23 points tonight (Wednesday, February 20, 2008) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated John Carroll University, 81-70, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its win, the B-W improved to 10-14 overall and 7-10 in the OAC and won its second straight game and fourth in its last five. With its loss, the JCU dropped to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in the OAC.
In the first half, JCU jumped out to a 7-4 lead at the 16:24 mark when freshman forward Maurice Haynes made a layup. B-W earned its first lead at 12-11 at the 12:20 mark when sophomore forward Brown made a three. The Blue Streaks regained the lead at 13-12 and increased it to 17-14 with 9:39 left when junior guard Donte Ledwell made a jump shot. B-W then regained the lead and built it to 10 points on two separate occasions with the last one being at the 41-31 mark when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a three-pointer with 5.5 seconds left before the intermission. The Jackets also led at halftime, 41-31.
In the second half, B-W built its lead to 13 points at 51-38 with 16:37 left when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) made a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets built their largest lead of the game at 24 points at 67-43 with 11:02 left when junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) made two foul shots. JCU would go on a 18-3 run to get within nine points at 70-61 with 4:15 remaining when sophomore forward Desmond Motley made two foul shots.
In addition to Brown for B-W, junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with 15 points, Tumblin with 12 and Sekerak with 11. JCU was led by sophomore forward Rudy Kirbus withy 20 points, senior forward Terry Walsh with 19 points and Motley had 12.
B-W will return to action on Saturday, February 23 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play OAC rival Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m.

Pre-game Setup -- The B-W men's basketball team will host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival JCU in the second of two regular season games in Berea and at the Ursprung Gym. It is Seniors' Night at B-W. Before the game, 5'11" senior two-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) and 6'0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) will be honored.
B-W comes into this game with a 9-14 overall and 6-10 OAC record following an 87-74 win against Muskingum College on Saturday, February 16 in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won four of their last six games.
JCU enters the game with an 11-11 overall and 8-8 OAC record following its 93-65 win versus Marietta College on Feb. 16 in University Heights. The Blue Streaks ended a four-game losing streak by beating the Pioneers.
The All-Time Series Between B-W and John Carroll-- This is the 99th all-time meeting between B-W and JCU in men's basketball. B-W has a 54-44 advantage in the series, but JCU has won the last two games, including a 91-75 win in a game on January 16 in University Hts. B-W's last win against the Blue Streaks came on Feb. 15, 2007 in Berea when B-W won, 81-77.

Brown tops the team in scoring at 16.8 ppg., is third with 4.3 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 57. Schuler is second in scoring at 14.5 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., leads the team in assists with 129 and is second with 41 threepointers and 32 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 13.0 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.0 rpg. and in blocked shots with 37. Tumblin is fourth with 12.5 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg., and is third with 30 three-pointers and 40 assists. Sekerak averages 7.7 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., is second on the team with 54 assists and leads the team with 52 steals.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Paul Glass, 5'11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6'5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch) and 5'7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.8 ppg. and has 23 three-pointers. Glass scores 5.4 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg.
In the B-W's Last Game on Feb. 16 versus Muskingum College in Berea : B-W -- 87, Muskingum-- 74-- In B-W's last game, an 87-74 win against Muskingum College last Saturday, Feb. 16 in Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Louis Tumblin with a team-high 23 points and Kyle Brown scored 22. In addition, Andrew Bene scored 13 points and Brendan Schuler had 12 points, six assists and six rebounds. The key to the Yellow Jacket victory was shooting 65.2 percent from the field in the second half on 15-of-23 attempts, including six three-pointers. In comparison, after making nine-of-14 three-pointers in the first half, Muskingum made just three-of-16 after the intermission. B-W trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half.
John Carroll Information and Probable Starters -- John Carroll scores 77.0 ppg. and allows 77.5 ppg. for a minus 0.5 ppg. differential. The Blue Streaks shoot 45.4 percent (589-of-1297) from the field, including 33.2% (111-of-334) from three-point range, and 71.0 % (404-of-569) from the free throw line. JCU grabs 37.0 rebounds per game, while allowing 33.4 to their opponents for a plus 3.6 margin.
Look for Head Coach Mike Moran to start 6' 2'' junior Donte Ledwell and , 5' 11" senior Tony DeMichele. Up front, Moran will start 6' 4" freshman Maurice Haynes, 6'4'' sophomore Rudy Kirbus and 6'3" senior Terry Walsh. Walsh leads JCU with 17.9 ppg., 6.8 rpg., 34 three-pointers, 69 assists and 25 steals. Kirbus scores 13.1ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg and is second in three-pointers with 30. Haynes averages 8.4 ppg. and 3.3 rpg. Ledwell scores 6.0 ppg., and has 20 threepointers. DeMichele scores 1.4 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and has 34 assists.
Off the bench, look for Moran to play 6'7" senior forward Derek Smith, 6'0" senior guard John Curran, 6' 4" senior guard Jason Thompson, 6'4" sophomore guard TJ DiSanto and 6'4" sophomore forward Desmond Motley. Smith is the leading scorers off the bench with 7.9 ppg., grabs 5.7 rpg. and shoots 63.1% from the floor (70-of-111). Curran scores 5.5 ppg. and has 22 assists and 17 steals. Thompson scores 4.5 ppg. DiSanto scores 3.8 ppg. and 14 three-pointers. Motley scores 5.9 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg. Also, 6'5" freshman forward Kyle Hubbard has played the past eight games and scores 5.0 ppg.
In the Blue Streaks Last Game on Feb. 16 Versus Marietta College in Marietta: JCU-- 93, Marietta-- 65-- In JCU's last game, a 93-65 victory over Marietta College at the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta on Feb. 16, the Blue Streaks were led by Rudy Kirbus with a team-high 17 points. John Curran came off the bench to chip in with 13 points and Maurice Haynes had 12 and both Donte Ledwell and T.J. DiSanto had 10 each. The key to the JCU victory was shooting 61.4% from the field for the game on 35-of-57 attempts, including seven-of-12 from three-point range. JCU also outrebounded the Pioneers, 34-25, and forced 19 Marietta turnovers.

Brendan Schuler 21st All-Time in Scoring -- In Saturday's 87-74 win against Muskingum, Brendan Schuler scored 12 points to give him 1,133 career points. He needs three points to pass Keith Aufmuth (2002-2006) for 20th on the alltime scoring list. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 467 and ninth in three pointers with 179.
Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson looks to win his 699th career game at B-W and in the OAC when the Jackets play John Carroll. Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W. Bankson needs two more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 417-327 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 698 career wins in 44 years overall and a 698-441 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
Louis Tumblin Was the Grotto Player of the Game -- Louis Tumblin scored a team-high 23 points last Saturday and was named as the Al Sirat Grotto Player of the Game. The Grotto is a local charitable group who's philanthropy is children suffering from cerebral palsy. Partial gate proceeds went to benefit the charity. Muskingum's Player of the Game was junior forward Tyler Felt.
Dennis Santiago is an Academic All-OAC Candidate -- A year ago, Dennis Santiago earned Academic All-OAC accolades for his efforts on the basketball court. The political scienece major who carries a 3.27 grade average is a candidate again this season.
