Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Falls to John Carroll, 91-75, in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Dante Ledwell scored a team-high 19 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team fell to John Carroll University, 91-75, tonight (Wednesday, January 16, 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights.

With its loss, B-W falls to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the OAC.  With its win, John Carroll improves to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the OAC.

In the first half, John Carroll jumped out to an early 13-5 lead at the 14:58 mark when sophomore forward Rudy Kirbus knocked down a three pointer.  The Yellow Jackets outscored the Blue Streaks 14-2 to lead by four at 19-15 with 11:25  after a three pointer by sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville).  The Yellow Jackets built their lead to nine points on two separate occassions with the last being at 39-30 with 3:30 left when junior forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) scored on a layup.  B-W also led at halftime 44-39.

In the second half, John Carroll went on a 13-7 run to take the lead 52-51, on two free throws by freshman forward Maurice Haynes with 15:03 left.  John Carroll expanded their lead to 80-64 when senior forward Terry Walsh completed a three-point play with 4:35 left.  With 1:18 remaining, senior guard John Curran extended the John Carroll lead to 17 points at 87-70 with two made free throws.

In addition to Ledwell, senior forward Terry Walsh had 18 points, Kirbus had 12 points, and both sophmore forward Desmond Motley and senior forward Jason Thompson had 10 points.  For B-W, Brown had a game-high 21 points, sophmore forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior) had a career-high 17 points, senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 13 points, and Bene had 12 points.

B-W will next play on Saturday, January 19 when it hosts Marietta College in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #14 at John Carroll University

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to University Heights, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:00 p.m. This is the seventh OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the first of two regular season meetings versus the Blue Streaks.

             

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels cross-town to University Heights to play OAC and Greater Cleveland rival John Carroll University in a game that will be televised on a delay basis by SportsTime Ohio. This game almost always comes down to the final minute of play before the winner is decided.

B-W comes into this game with a 5-8 overall record and 2-4 OAC record following a 97-91 overtime loss against Muskingum College on January 12 in New Concord. The Yellow Jackets have split their last four games.

JCU enters the game with a 6-6 overall and 3-3 OAC record following its 86-45 win versus Marietta College on January 12 in University Heights to break a two-game losing streak. The Blue Streaks have won their of their last five contests overall.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and John Carroll-- This is the 100th meeting between B-W and JCU in men's basketball. The Yellow Jackets have a 55-44 advantage in the all-time series, but the Blue Streaks won the last game between the two team  a year ago with a 76-69 win in the semifinals of the 2007 OAC Tournament/ Final Four at Capital University in Columbus. B-W had previously won both regular season games and had a six-game winning streak versus its cross-town rival prior to the tourney. On Jan. 3 in University Hts., B-W beat JCU, 80-73, and on Feb. 10 in Berea, B-W came back from a large first half deficit to beat the Blue Streaks, 81-77. B-W and JCU also have a long history that includes games as part of the Big Four in Cleveland.

In Last Year's First B-W versus JCU Game in University Heights, Ohio: B-W -- 80, JCU -- 73 -- In the first of two regular season meetings between B-W and JCU last season, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 80-73, on Jan. 3, 2007 at the DeCarlo Center in University Hts. B-W was led by 2-time All-American Tori Davis with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, current 6' 0" senior 2-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored 25 points, current 5' 11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had 14 points and current 6'0" senior guard and defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) had 11 points. The Blue Streaks were led by current 6'5" senior forward Terry Walsh's 20 points.

In Last Year's Second B-W versus JCU Game in Berea: B-W -- 81, JCU -- 77 -- In the second regular season game between B-W and JCU last season, the Yellow Jackets came back from an 18-point first half deficit to beat the Blue Streaks, 81-77, in the Ursprung Gym in Berea on February 10, 2007. B-W was led by Tori Davis with 32 points and 10 rebounds, Brendan Schuler scored 13 points and passed for five assists and current 6'6" junior center Andrew Bene (Hinkley/ Medina Highland) scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Blue Streaks were led by graduated All-OAC point guard Pete Moran with 17 points, Terry Walsh added 15 points and seven rebounds and current 6'5" sophomore forward Rudy Kirbus had 16 points.

In Last Year's Third B-W versus JCU Game in the OAC Semifinals at Capital University in Columbus Ohio: JCU --76, B-W -- 69 -- In the final of the three 2006-2007 meetings bwteen B-W and JCU, in the semifinals of the 2007 OAC Tournament at Capital University in Columbus on Feb. 23, JCU defeated the Yellow Jackets, 76-69. Despite the loss, B-W was led by Tori Davis with 15 points and 17 rebounds. In addition, Brendan Schuler scored 13 points and Dennis Santiago had 14 points. The Blue Streaks were led by Terry Walsh with 23 points and 13 rebounds. In addition, graduated guard John Curran came off the bench to score 15 points and Brandon Mimes had 11 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.8 points per game and allows 83.2 ppg. for a minus 2.5 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.2 percent (373-of-807) from the field, including 39.9 percent (114-of-286) from three-point range, and 72.5 percent (190-of-262) from the free throw line. They average 34.2 rpg. and give up 37.8 rpg. for a minus 3.7rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak, 6'1'' sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) and Brendan Schuler to start. 

Brown tops the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg., is second with 5.0 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers (32).  Schuler is second in scoring at 16.7 ppg. and three-pointers with 29, leads the team in assists with 73 and leads the team in field goal shooting at 54.0 percent on 74-of-137 attempts, including 50.9% percent from three-point range (29-of-57).  Bene is third in scoring at 11.8 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.8 rpg. and in blocked shots with 27. Sekerak averages 8.8 ppg., leads the team in steals with 34, is second with 32 assists\ and is third in rebounds with 3.6 rpg. Tumblin averages 11.1 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg., and is third with 21 assists and 18 triples.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Dennis Santiago, 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/Sandy Valley), 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6' 5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/Coffman). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.9 ppg. and 15 three-pointers.

In the B-W's Last Game on Jan. 12 versus Muskingum College : B-W -- 91, Muskingum-- 97 in Overtime-- In BW's last game, a 97-91 overtime loss to Muskingum College in New Concord on Jan. 12, the Yellow Jackets were led by Louis Tumblin with career-highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Brendan Schuler had a double-double 17 points and a season-high 13 assists, Andrew Bene had his second straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Dennis Santiago came off the bench to score 10 points. B-W had a 79-72 lead with 58 seconds left in regulation and also led by five points in overtime despite the loss.

John Carroll Information and Probable Starters -- John Carroll scores 76.2 ppg. and allows 76.9 ppg. for a minus 0.7 ppg. differential. The Blue Streaks shoot 42.1% (307-of-730) from the field, including 32.8% (65-of-198) from three-point range, and 70.2% (236-of-336) from the free throw line. John Carroll also grabs 39.6 rpg. and gives up 36.8 rpg. for a plus 2.8 rpg. differential.

Who veteran Head Coach Mike Moran starts is almost anyone's guess. To date, 10 different players have started and and 11 players have seen action in at least 10-of-12 contests. Moran likes to shuffle players in-and-out of the game and at times will replace five players at a time.

Look for 6'7" senior forward/ center Derek Smith and 6'3 senior forward Terry Walsh and 6'4" sophomore T.J. DiSanto to starts. In JCU's last game against Marietta College, Moran started 5'9" freshman DeAndre Richardson and 6'2" junior Donte Ledwell.

To date, Walsh leads the team in scoring with 18.8 ppg. and rebounding with 7.3 rpg. He also has the most assists (36), steals (14) and three-pointers (22) and shoots 81.8% from the foul oline. Rudy Kirbus, a 6'4" sophomore guard/forward who has started five games and is the back up quarterback on the football team, is second in scoring with 12.6 ppg., third in rebounding with 5.0 rpg. and second with 15 triples. Smith is third in scoring at 9.0 ppg and second in rebounding with 5.7 rpg. He shoots 65.6% from the floor on 42-of-64 attempts. Maurice Haynes, a 6'4" freshman forward, is fourth in scoring at 7.8 ppg. and grabs 3.6 rpg. John Curran, a 6'0" senior who has started six games, rounds out the top five scorers at 6.4 ppg. DiSanto scores 5.3 ppg. and has 11 three-pointers.

Off the bench, look for Kirbus, Haynes, Curran, 6'4" senior forward Jason Thompson, 5'11" senior guard Tony DeMichele, 6'3" junior guard Alex Kolstov and 6'1" sophomore guard Brian Dandrea all to play.

In the Blue Streaks Last Game on Jan. 12 versus Marietta College in University Heights: JCU-- 86, Marietta -- 45-- In John Carroll's last game, an 86-45 win against Marietta College at The DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights on Jan. 12, the Blue Streaks were led by Rudy Kirbus, who came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points and grab eight rebounds in 17 minutes of action. In addition, Donte Ledwell scored 12 points and Maurice Haynes had 11 points aand eight rebounds. JCU outrebounded ghe Pioneers, 56-44, and forced Marieta into making 25 turnovers.

Brendan Schuler 34th All-Time in Scoring -- On January 9 in a 93-87 overtime win versus Otterbein College, Brendan Schuler scored his 1,000th career point and joined the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club. His current total of 1,017 career points ranks him 34th on the all-time scoring list and four points shy of Jerry Schrock (1960-63) and Roland Gordan (1962-64) and 30 shy of the Top-30. In addition, Schuler stands fourth all-time in assists with 411 and 10th in three pointers with 167.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 413th career game at B-W and in the OAC when the Jackets beat Otterbein. The win moved Bankson ahead of the legendary Mose Hole of Wooster and into third place on the all-time OAC Coaching Win List.  In addition, Bankson needs six more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 413-321 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 694 career wins in 44 years overall and a 694-435 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.

Louis Tumblin Has Strong Week -- Louis Tumblin had a good week in games versus Otterbein and Muskingum by scoring 47 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. He had career-highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds at Muskingum.
