Heidelberg College Men Defeat Baldwin-Wallace College, 99-80, in OAC Semifinal Game in Columbus

B-W Finishes the Season at 12-15 overall

BEREA, OHIO --   The senior trio of guard Shawn Shriver, forward Andrew Lemmon and center Brian Schmidt combined to score 60 points and 30 rebounds tonight (Friday, February 29, 2008) as the No.two-seeded Heidelberg College men's basketball team defeated No.6-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College, 99-80, in the first semifinal game of the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Final Four being played at top-seeded Capital University in The Capital Center in Columbus.

Schmidt led the Student Princes with 21 points and 12 rebounds, Lemmon had 20 points and 11 rebounds had Shriver added 19 points and seven for Heidelberg, now 22-5 overall with seven straight wins. The last Student Prince defeat came on Feb. 2 when it lost to the Yellow Jackets, 87-84, in Berea. With its loss, B-W ends its season at 12-15 overall.

With the loss, veteran head coach Steve Bankson ends his 44th career season with an impressive 701-442 record, including 420 victories in 28 seasons and a 420-328 record at B-W. Bankson is the third winningest men’s basketball coach in OAC history.

In the first half, the Student Princes raced out to an early 10-4 lead at the 17:24 mark when Schmidt made a layup. Heidelberg built its lead to 17 points on two separate occassions with the last being at 29-12 with 6:21 left when Schmidt made a jump shot. The the Yellow Jackets went on a 8-0 run to cut the lead to nine points on two separate occasion with the last being at 29-20 with 3:06 left when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior). Then Heidelberg went on a 10-2 run to regain its 17-point advantage at 39-22 with 1:35 left when senior guard Shawn Shriver made a three-pointer. The Student Princes also led at halftime, 43-28.

In the second half, Heidelberg built its lead to 18 points at 48-30 with 18:54 left when Schmidt made a jumper. B-W then went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 11 points at 48-37 with 17:05 left when Tumblin canned two foul shots. Undaunted the Student Princes went on a 9-0 run of their own and led by 19 points at 56-37 with 15:26 when senior forward Andrew Lemmon made a three-pointer. The largest lead for Heidelberg was 27 points at the 95-68 mark when with 4:04 left when sophomore forward Travis Kinn scored on a layup.

In addition to the senior trio for Heidelberg, junior guard Jake Hessey had 11 points and senior guard Greg Tyson Jr. had 10. B-W was led by senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) with 16 points and Tumblin had 15.

In the nightcap, Capital plays No.3-seed Ohio Northern University in the second semifinal game at 8:00 p.m.  The OAC Championship Game is tomorrow (Saturday, March 1) at Capital at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #27 versus Heidelberg College in OAC Tournament Semifinals at Capital

The sixth-seeded BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team travels to Columbus, Ohio and host Capital University to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival and second-seeded Heidelberg College on Friday, February 27, 2008 in an OAC semifinal game at the Capital Center at 6:00 p.m. This is the third meeting this season between B-W and Heidelberg. The winner advances to the OAC Championship Game on Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. and will play the winner of the top-seeded Capital versus fourth-seeded Ohio Northern University semifinal game.

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to advance to the 2008 OAC Championship Game when it travels to Columbus, Ohio to play Heidelberg College in the first of two OAC semifinal games at host and top-seeded Capital University. It is B-W's fourth straight trip to the Final Four. The winner of this game advances to the OAC Championship Game on Saturday, March 1 at Capital.

B-W comes into this game with a 12-14 overall record and finished in a tie for sixth place during the OAC regular season with an 8-10 mark. The Yellow Jackets last played on Wednesday, February 27 when they upset third-seeded Wilmington College, 67-59, in Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington for Head Coach Steve Bankson's 701st career victory. The Yellow Jackets have won a season-high four straight games and seven of their last nine contests overall.

Heidelberg enters the game with a 21-5 overall record and finished second during the OAC regular season with a 14-4 slate. The Student Princes have won six straight games, including a decisive, 104-74, win against John Carroll University on Wednesday in Tiffin.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg -- This is the 102nd all-time meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in men's basketball with B-W holding a commanding 62-39 advantage. The two teams split the season series as both teams won on their home court. Heidelberg beat B-W, 100-96, in Tiffin on January 23, 2008 and the Yellow Jackets beat the Student Princes, 87-84, on Feb. 6 in Berea. B-W has won nine of the last 13 games against The 'Berg, including a 95-82 OAC Tournament quarterfinal win last season on February 21, 2007 in Berea.

In This Season's First B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Berea on January 23, 2008: Heidelberg -- 100, B-W -- 96-- In the first of two regular season games between B-W and Heidelberg, the Student Princes won, 100-96, on Jan. 23, 2008 at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The 'Berg was led by senior center Brian Schmidt who scored 21 points on eight-of-11 shooting. Also in double figures for Heidelberg were junior guard Jake Hessey with 14, junior guard Chad Szalay with 13, and senior guard Andrew Lemmon with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. B-W was led by 6'6" junior forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with a game and career-high 30 points and was followed by 6'2" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with 19 points, 5'11" senior two-time All-OAC point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) with 12 points and 6'0" senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) with 10 points. Heidelberg was led by 6'6" senior center Brian Schmidt with 21 points. In addition, 5'11" junior guard Jake Hessey came off the bench to score 14 points, 6'5" senior forward Andrew Lemmon had 13 points and a gamehigh 10 rebounds and 6'0" junior guard Chad Szalay had 13 points. In this game, B-W overcame an 18-point second half deficit to almost pull out a victory.

In This Season's Second B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Berea on February 6, 2008: B-W -- 87, Heidelberg -- 84 -- In the second of two regular season contests between the B-W and Heidelberg, the Yellow Jackets prevailed, 87-84, on Feb. 6 at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. B-W was led by Louis Tumblin with a season-high-tying 27 points on nineof- 17 shooting overall, including three-of-four from three-point range. Also in double figures for the Yellow Jackets were Andrew Bene and Brendan Schuler each with 12 points, and Tyler Sekerak scored 10. Heidelberg was led by Chad Szalay with 20 points, Lemmon and Schmidt were joined by 6'1" senior guard Shawn Shriver with 16 each and Jake Hessey came off the bench to score 12. B-W overcame a four-point Heidelberg halftime lead to gain the win and the split of the season series.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.3 points per game and allows 80.3 ppg. for a 0.0 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.8 percent (748-of-1597) from the field, including 37.8 percent (204-of-539) from three-point range, and 74.5 percent (389-of-522) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 34.3 rpg. and give up 36.6 rpg. for a minus 2.3 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and 6' 4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) on the inside. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak, Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 16.9 ppg., is third with 4.1 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 64. Schuler is tied for second in scoring at 13.6 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., leads the team in assists with 142 and is second with 44 three-pointers and 34 steals. Bene is tied with Schuler for second in scoring at 13.6 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.5 rpg. and in blocked shots with 40. Tumblin is fourth with 12.5 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg., and is third with 36 threepointers and 43 assists. Sekerak averages 7.4 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., is second on the team with 56 assists and leads the team with 53 steals.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6' 2" sophomore guard Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior), 5' 11" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), 5' 11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch) and 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.8 ppg. and has 25 three-pointers. Glass scores 5.2 ppg. and grabs 2.2 rpg.

In the B-W's Last Game on Feb. 27, 2008 versus Wilmington College in Wilmington: B-W -- 67, Wilmington -- 59 -- In B-W's last game, a 67-59 upset win against third-seeded Wilmington College on Feb. 27 in the first round of the OAC Tournament at Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, B-W was led by Andrew Bene with game-high 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. In addition, Louis Tumblin had 20 points and Kyle Brown added 16. A key to the win was B-W outrebounded the Quakers, 44-33, and outscored Wilmington from the foul line, 18-5.

Heidelberg Information and Probable Starters -- Heidelberg scores 85.0 ppg. and allows 73.5 ppg. for a plus 11.5 ppg. differential. The Student Princes shoot 48.6 percent (791-of-1629) from the field, including 36.7 percent (219-of-597) from three-point range, and 68.7 percent (409-of-595) from the free throw line. Heidelberg also grabs 38.2 rpg. and gives up 34.8 rpg. for a plus 3.4 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 6' 6" senior Brian Schmidt in the post, 6' 5" senior Andrew Lemmon and 6' 0" junior Chad Szalay at the wing spots and 6' 0" senior Shawn Shriver and 6'1" sophomore Josh Calver at the guard positions. The key player off the bench is 6'5" senior Greg Tyson. Lemmon is tied for first in scoring with 14.5 ppg., is tied for second with 47 three-pointers and leads the team in rebounding with 9.7 rpg. and blocked shots with 25. Schmidt is tied with Lemmon for first on the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg., second with 7.5 rpg. and shoots 55.9% from the floor (156-of-279). Szalay is third in scoring with 14.3 ppg. and is first with 61 three-pointers and leads the team in steals with 43. Shriver scores 11.4 ppg. in 23 games with 2.8 rpg.  He also has 47 three-pointers, 48 assists and 25 steals. Calver scores 4.5 ppg. and leads the team with 88 assists. Tyson scores 10.1 ppg. and grabs 4.0 rpg.

In addition and off the bench, look for 6' 5" sophomore forward Travis Kinn, 5' 11" junior guard Jake Hessey, 6' 1" sophomore guard Jim Smalley and 6' 2" senior guard Matt Eberle to all possibly see action. Hessey scores 6.7 ppg. and has 32 three-pointers. Kinn scores 5.5 ppg. and grabs 3.9 rpg. Smalley scores 2.5 ppg.

In the Student Princes Last Game on Feb. 27 versus John Carroll University in Tiffin: Heidelberg -- 104, JCU -- 74 -- In Heidelberg's last game, a 104-74 victory versus No.7-seed John Carroll University in a first-round OAC Tournament game on Feb. 27 at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Heidelberg was led by Andrew Lemmon with a teamhigh 18 points. He was one of six Student Prince players to score double figures. In addition, Chad Szalay had 16 points, Shawn Shriver and Jake Hessey had 14 each, Greg Tyson had 11 and Brian Schmidt had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Heidelberg raced to a 58-30 halftime lead and never looked back. The Student Princes made 14-of-27 threepointers, including nine-of-17 in the first half.

Brendan Schuler 19th All-Time in Scoring -- In Wednesday's 67-59 win at Wilmington, Brendan Schuler scored seven points to give him 1,153 career points and move him into 18th place on the school's all-time scoring list and surpass Hall-of-Famer Dick Selgo (1947-1950) who had 1,152 points. Schuler now needs 78 more points to pass All-American and Academic All-American Bob Scelza (1981-84) for 17th place. In addition to his scoring prowess, Schuler also stands third in career assists with 480 and seventh in three pointers with 182.

Steve Bankson Wins His 700th Career Game -- 44-year veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 700th career game last Saturday (Feb. 23, 2008) when B-W beat Marietta College, 86-60, in Marietta. Bankson now has a 701-441 career mark that includes 28 years at B-W, 12 at Lorain (Ohio) County Community College and four at the high school level. He is 420-327 at B-W, was 232-90 at LCCC and 49-24 at the high school level.

Bankson Also is Third All-Time in OAC History in Wins -- Steve Bankson's 420 at B-W wins also ranks him third on the all-time OAC Coaching Win List. He also is first all-time at B-W. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.

Dennis Santiago is an Academic All-OAC Candidate -- A year ago, Dennis Santiago earned Academic All-OAC accolades for his efforts on the basketball court. The political science major who carries a 3.27 grade average is a candidate again this season.
