Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat Heidelberg College, 87-84, in Berea and Stretch Win Streak to Three

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) scored a career-high 27 points tonight (Wednesday, February 6, 2008) as Baldwin-Wallace College defeated Heidelberg College, 87-84, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, the B-W improved to 8-12 overall and 5-8 in the OAC and has won three straight. With its loss, Heidelberg dropped to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Student Princes jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 18:46 mark when junior guard Chad Szalay made a three-pointer. B-W then outscored Heidelberg 15-7 to take a 15-13 lead with 13:02 left when freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ Beliot West Branch) scored on a layup.  Heidelberg then went on a 29-17 run to build it largest lead of the game at 42-32 with 2:42 left before the intermission when senior forward Andrew Lemmon followed a missed shot with a rebound basket. Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points to cut the lead to 42-40 with 1:14 left when sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) rebounded a missed B-W free throw and scored a two-point basket. B-W also trailed at halftime, 44-40.

In the second half, B-W cut the lead back to two points at 44-42 when junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) scored on a jumper. Heidelberg then outscored the Jackets 13-7 to build an eight-point lead with at 57-49 with 16:04 left when senior center Brian Schmidt made two foul shots. B-W came back to tie the game at 64-64 with 10:35 left when Tumblin scored, was fouled and made a foul shot.

The Yellow Jackets then gained the lead at 68-64 with 9:48 left when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made a jump shot. It was the first of six four-point leads with the last at 79-75  at the 4:42 mark when senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) made two foul shots. The lead went to six points at the 3:50 mark when Glass tipped in a missed B-W shot for an 81-75 lead.

Heidelberg then scored the next four points to cut the lead to two points. A layup by senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) gave B-W a four-point lead at 83-79 with 2:20 left. Szalay countered with a three-pointer at the 1:17 mark to make it a one-point game at 83-82. Bene then made a jumper with 19 seconds left to make it 85-82 and Schmidt countered with six seconds remaining to make it 85-84. Tumblin then put the finishing touch on a career-night by making two foul shots with three seconds left to end the scoring.

In addition to Tumblin, Schuler and Bene had 12 points each and Sekerak had 10. For Heidelberg, Szalay led the way with 20 points and was joined in double figure scoring senior guard Shawn Shriver, Schmidt and Lemmon with 16 each and junior guard Jake Hessey had 12. Lemmon also had a game-high 14 rebounds.

B-W will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers in the Fred Razik Arena at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #20 HOST Heidelberg College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m in Berea. This is the 13th OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the second of two regular season meetings versus the Student Princes.

                               

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to stretch its winning ways to a seasonhigh three straight games when it hosts Heidelberg College in the second of two regular season games against the rival Student Princes. The game also matches B-W veteran coach Steve Bankson as the mentor versus the pupil in former BW standout and current Heidelberg coach Duane Sheldon.

B-W comes into this game with a 7-12overall and 4-8 OAC record following an 82-69 victory against Ohio Northern Unversity on Saturday, February 2 in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won two straight games. The first being an 81- 72 victory versus Mount Union College in Alliance on January 30.

Heidelberg enters the game with a 15-4 overall and 9-3 OAC record following its 68-50 win versus Mt. Union on Feb. 2 in Tiffin. The Student Princes have won eight of their last 10 games and are all alone in second place in the OAC Standings.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg-- This is the 100th meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in men's basketball with B-W leading the series, 60-39, despite a 100-96 loss in the first meeting this season with the Student Princes on Jan. 23, 2008 in Tiffin. B-W's last victory was a 95-82 win in the OAC Tournament in Berea on Feb. 21, 2007.

In the First B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Tiffin: Heidelberg -- 100, B-W -- 96-- In the first of two regular season games between B-W and Heidelberg, the Student Princes defeated the Yellow Jackets, 100-96, on Jan. 23, 2008 at Sieberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. B-W was led by 6'6" junior forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Highland) with a game and career-high 30 points and five rebounds. In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) scored 19 points, 6'0" senior 2-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 12 and 6'0" senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry Pa./ Corry Area) added 10. The Student Princes were led by 6'6'' senior center Brian Schmidt's 21 points. B-W overcame a 17-point second half deficit but could get no closer than two points down the stretch.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.9 points per game and allows 83 ppg. for a minus 2.1 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.9 percent (552-of-1,177) from the field, including 38.5 percent (155-of-403) from three-point range, and 74.9 percent (278-of-371) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 33.3 rpg. and give up 37.5 rpg. for a minus 4.2 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and 6'4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak, Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 17.3 ppg., is second with 4.4 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 46. Schuler is second in scoring at 15.5 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg., leads the team in assists with 110 and is second on the team with 39 three-pointers and 27 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 13.7 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.2 rpg. and in blocked shots with 36. Tumblin is fourth on the team in scoring with 11.3 ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg., and is third on the team with 22 three-pointers and 35 assists. Sekerak averages 7.7 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., is second on the team with 41 assists and leads the team with 45 steals.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior), 5'11" junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Hts. Midpark), 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch) and 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/Sandy Valley). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 8.1 ppg. and has 20 three-pointers.

In the B-W's Last Game on Feb. 2 versus Ohio Northern University : B-W -- 82, Ohio Northern-- 69-- In B-W's last game, an 82-69 victory against Ohio Northern University last Saturday, February 2 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Brendan Schuler with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Andrew Bene chipped-in the with 20 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots and Louis Tumblin scored 16 points. Keys to the victory included shooting 52 percent from the floor in the second half, including 50% from three-point range (six-of-12), and making 11-of-13 free throws down the stretch in the final 5:06 of the contest.

Heidelberg Information and Probable Starters -- Heidelberg scores 83.1 ppg. and allows 72 ppg. for a plus 11.1 ppg. differential. The Student Princes shoot 48.3 percent (567-of-1,175) from the field, including 35.3 percent (148-of-419) from three-point range, and 68.5 percent (296-of-432) from the free throw line. Heidelberg also grabs 37.8 rpg. and gives up 34.9 rpg. for a plus 2.9 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 6'6" senior Brian Schmidt in the post, 6'5" senior Andrew Lemmon and 6'5" senior Greg Tyson at the wing spots and 6'0" junior Chad Szalay and 6'1" sophomore Josh Calver at the guard positions. Last Saturday versus Muskingum, and for the first time this season, 6'0" senior guard Shawn Shriver did not start or play for the Student Princes. Szalay leads the team in scoring with 14.5 ppg. and three-pointers with 42, grabs 1.7 rpg., and leads the team in steals with 35. Lemmon is third in scoring with 13.2 ppg., is second with 32 three-pointers and leads the team in rebounding with 8.9 rpg. and blocked shots with 21. He also shoots 54.4% from the floor (93-of-171). Schmidt is second on the team in scoring at 14.2 ppg., second with 7.6 rpg. and shoots 55.8% from the floor (110-of-197). He is leading the team with 41assists. Tyson tallies 10.4 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., and is second on the team with 15 blocks and has 28 assists. Calver scores 4.7 ppg. and leads the team with 58 assists. If Shriver is healthy enough to play, he scores 9.9 ppg., grabs 2.3 rpg., and has 32 assists and 29 triples.

Off the bench, look for 6'5" sophomore forward Travis Kinn, 5'11" junior guard Jake Hessey, 6'1" sophomore guard Jake Hessey and 6'2" senior guard Matt Eberle to all possibly see action for Sheldon's team. Hessey is the leading scorer off the bench with 6.6 ppg. and has 22 three-pointers. Kinn scores 6.0 ppg. and third with 4.2 rpg.

In the Student Princes Last Game on Feb. 2 versus Mount Union College in Tiffin: Heidelberg-- 68, Mount Union-- 50-- In Heidelberg's last game, a 68-50 victory versus the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College in Tiffin, Ohio, the Student Princes were led by Brian Schmidt with 21 points, 17 rebounds. Jake Hessey chipped-in with 16 points. Greg Tyson Jr. added 11 points and five rebounds. Mount Union was led by Chris Crawford with 11 points.

Brendan Schuler 26th All-Time in Scoring -- In Saturday's 82-69 win over Ohio Northern University, Brendan Schuler scored 22 points to give him 1,094 career points. With that total, he surpasses Brian Newland (1987-91) and moved into 26th place on the all-time scoring list. He is now one point shy of Joe Mackey (1991-95) and the Top-25 and four points from tying former B-W standout and Heidelberg assistant coach Jon Carroll (1999-2003) for 24th place. In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 448 and eighth in three pointers with 177.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson looks to win his 416th career game at B-W and in the OAC when the Jackets play at Heidelberg. Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W.

Bankson needs four more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 415-325 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 696 career wins in 44 years overall and a 696-439 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
