Heidelberg Men’s Basketball Team Beats Baldwin-Wallace, 100-96, in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior forward Brian Schmidt scored a team-high 21 points as the Heidelberg College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 100-96, tonight (Wednesday, January 23, 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin.

With its win, Heidelberg improved to 13-3 overall and ended the first half of the OAC regular season schedule with a 7-2 mark. The victory also ended a two-game B-W winning streak versus the Student Princes.  With its loss, B-W dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in the OAC. It also was B-W's fourth straight loss.

In the first half, B-W took a 8-7 lead at the 16:47 mark when senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) connected on two foul shots.  Then Heidelberg went on a 15-6 run to take a 22-14 lead with 11:10 left in the half when senior guard Greg Tyson, Jr. had a rebound and then made a basket.  The Student Princes had three leads of 16 points with the last being at 50-34 with 28 seconds left in the half when junior guard Jake Hessey made two foul shots.  Heidelberg took a 50-37 lead into locker room at halftime.  Junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) had 18 points in the first half.

In the second half, B-W opened with a 14-8 run to cut the lead to 58-51 when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) converted a three point play at the 15:28 mark.  The Student Princes would then respond with a 21-10 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 79-61 when sophomore forward Travis Kinn made a jumper with 9:51 left in the game.  B-W then went on a 30-13 run to cut the lead to one point at 92-91 with 1:04 left when Bene scored on a layup.  The Yellow Jackets and Student Princes traded baskets three times before junior guard Jake Hessey made two foul shots for a 96-93 lead with eight seconds left.  Schuler made a foul shot to cut the lead to two with four seconds left and intentionally missed the second shot, Heidelberg got the rebound and made two foul shots to close out the scoring. 

In addition to Schmidt, Hessey had 14 points and senior forward Andrew Lemmon and junior guard Chad Szalay each had 13 points.  For the Yellow Jackets, Bene had a career-high 30 points and joined in double figures by Tumblin with 19, Schuler with 12 and senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) had 10 points.

B-W will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when it hosts first place Capital University at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m. Heidelberg hosts Wilmington College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Tiffin.

Game Notes #16 at Heidelberg College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Tiffin, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. This is the ninth OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the first of two regular season meetings versus the Student Princes.

               

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to Tiffin to play Heidelberg College in the final game of the first half of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season schedule.

B-W comes into this game with a 5-10 overall and 2-6 OAC record following an 86-82 loss against Marietta College on Saturday, January 19 in Berea. The loss was the third straight for the Yellow Jackets.

Heidelberg enters the game with a 12-3 overall and 6-2 OAC record following its 83-67 win versus Muskingum College on Jan. 19 in Tiffin. The Student Princes have won five of their last six games and are all alone in second place in the OAC Standings.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg-- This is the 99th meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in men's basketball with B-W leading the series, 60-38, including wins in two-of-three contests last season and including in the 2007 OAC Tournament quarterfinal. B-W beat Heidelberg, 95-82, in the OAC Tournament in Berea on Feb. 21, 2007 and topped the Student Princes, 93-80, in Berea in the second meeting on Jan. 31. Heidelberg won the first meeting, 75-72, on Jan. 17 in Tiffin.

In Last Year's First B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Tiffin: Heidelberg -- 75, B-W -- 72-- In the first of two regular season games last season between B-W and Heidelberg, the Student Princes defeated the Jackets, 75-72, on Jan. 17, 2007 at Sieberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. B-W was led by 2-time All-American Tori Davis with a game-high 24 points and current 6'0" senior 2-time All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 11 points and six rebounds.  The Student Princes were led by current 6'0'' senior guard Shawn Shriver's 23 points.

In Last Year's Second B-W versus Heidelberg Game in Berea: B-W -- 93, Heidelberg-- 80 -- In the second game last season between B-W and Heidelberg, the Yellow Jackets beat the Student Princes, 93-80, in the Ursprung Gym in Berea on Jan. 31, 2007. B-W was lead by Tori Davis' 25 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, Brendan Schuler scored 20 points and current 5'10" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had 15 points. HC was led by current 6'5'' senior guard Andrew Lemmon and Shriver with 23 points each.

In Last Year's OAC Tournament Game Between B-W and Heideberg in Berea: B-W -- 95, Heidelberg -- 82 -- In last year's OAC Tournament qurterfinal in Berea on Feb. 21, No.3-seeded B-W defeated No.6-seeded Heidelberg, 95- 82. For B-W, Tori Davis dominated the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 80.5 points per game and allows 83.9 ppg. for a minus 3.5 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 46.8 percent (437-of-933) from the field, including 39 percent (128-of-328) from three-point range, and 73.2 percent (205-of-280) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets average 33.2 rpg. and give up 37.7 rpg. for a minus 4.5 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" junior Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6'4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions; athough 6'2" sophomore forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has started the past three games. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), 6'1'' sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg., is second with 4.5 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 37. Schuler is second in scoring at 16.7 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg., leads the team in assists with 92 and is second with 34 threepointers and 24 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 11.7 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.3 rpg. and in blocked shots with 31. Tumblin is fourth with 10.6 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg., and is tied for third with 18 three-pointers and 29 assists.  Sekerak averages 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.7 rpg., is second on the team with 35 assists and leads the team with 36 steals. If Glass starts his fourth straight game in place of Brown, he will take in season totals of 5.0 ppg. and 2.0 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Dennis Santiago, 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/Sandy Valley), 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6' 5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/Coffman). Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.7 ppg. and has 18 three-pointers.

In the B-W's Last Game on Jan. 19 versus Marietta College : B-W -- 82, Marietta-- 86-- In B-W's last game, an 86-82 loss to Marietta College last Satuday, January 19 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by Brendan Schuler with 21 points and eight assists. In addition, Kyle Brown came off the bench for the third straight game and had 16 points. Louis Tumblin had his second double-double in the past three games with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Andrew Bene added 10 points and six rebounds. Keys to the loss included letting Marietta shoot 60% in the second half on 18-of-30 shots; being outrebounded, 40-32; committing 17 turnovers and being outscored at the foul line, 12-8.

Heidelberg Information and Probable Starters -- Heidelberg scores 83.7 ppg. and allows 70.7 ppg. for a plus 13 ppg. differential. The Student Princes shoot 49 percent (460-of-947) from the field, including 36 percent (120-of-335) from three-point range, and 67 percent (216-of-323) from the free throw line. Heidelberg also grabs 38.9 rpg. and gives up 35 rpg. for a plus 3.9 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 6'6" senior Brian Schmidt in the post, 6'5" senior Andrew Lemmon and 6'5" senior Greg Tyson at the wing spots and 6'0" junior Chad Szalay and 6'1" sophomore Josh Calver at the guard positions. Last Saturday versus Muskingum, and for the first time this season, 6'0" senior guard Shawn Shriver did not start or play for the Student Princes. Szalay leads the team in scoring with 14.9 ppg. and three-pointers with 34, grabs 1.8 rpg., and leads the team in steals with 33. Lemmon is second in scoring with 14.1 ppg. and with 27 three-pointers and leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 rpg. and blocked shots with 16. He also shoots 56.3% from the floor (80-of-142). Schmidt is third on the team in scoring at 13.9 ppg., second with 7.1 rpg. and shoots 55.8% from the floor (86-of-154). He also is second with 32 assists. Tyson tallies 10.4 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., and is second with 14 blocks and has 24 assists. Calver scores 4.2 ppg. and leads the team with 47 assists. If Shriver is healthy enough to play, he scores 10.1 ppg., grabs 2.4 rpg., and has 27 assists and 24 triples.

Off the bench, look for 6'5" sophomore forward Travis Kinn, 5'11" junior guard Jake Hessey, 6'1" sophomore guard Jake Hessey and 6'2" senior guard Matt Eberle to all possibly see action for Sheldon's team. Kinn is the leading scorer off the bench with 6.3 ppg. and third with 4.3 rpg. Hessey scores 4.9 ppg. and has 16 three-pointers.

In the Student Princes Last Game on Jan. 19 versus Muskingum College in Tiffin: Heidelberg-- 83, Muskingum -- 67-- In Heidelberg's last game, a 83-67 victory versus the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum College in Tiffin, Ohio, the Student Princes were led by Andrew Lemmon with a game-high 19 points. He also had six rebounds and four blocked shots. Also for HC, Chad Szalay scored 16 points, Greg Tyson added 14 points and Jake Hessey came off the bench to score 10 points as Heidelberg moved into second place all alone in the OAC with its win versus Muskingum. Keys to the Heidelberg win included shooting 55.2% from the floor on 32-of-58 attempts, including eight-of-15 three-pointers and outrebounding the Muskies, 39-26.

Brendan Schuler 32nd All-Time in Scoring -- On January 9 in a 93-87 overtime win versus Otterbein College, Brendan Schuler scored his 1,000th career point and joined the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club. His current total of 1,051 career points ranks him 32nd on the all-time scoring list and six points shy of the Top-30. In addition, Schuler stands fourth all-time in assists with 430 and is now ninth in three pointers with 172.

Head Coach Steve Bankson Third All-Time in OAC History and Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson looks to win his 414th career game at B-W and in the OAC when the Jackets play at Heidelberg. Bankson ranks third on the OAC Coaching Win List and first all-time at B-W. Bankson needs six more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is 413-323 in 28 seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 694 career wins in 44 years overall and a 694-437 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
