Baldwin-Wallace Defeats Cross-Town Rival Case Western Reserve, 95-82, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark) scored a game and career-high 27 points as Baldwin-Wallace College defeated the Case Western Reserve University, 95-82, tonight (Thursday, November 29, 2007) in a battle of Greater Cleveland rivals in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.
 
With its win, B-W improved to 2-3 overall. In defeat, CWRU fell to 5-2 overall.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the 15:32 mark when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) connected on a three-pointer. CWRU then went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 10:11 remaining when junior center Ron Skoski scored on a layup.  Undaunted, B-W then outscored the visitors 31-17 the remainder of the half to take a 47-35 lead at the intermission.
 
In the second half, B-W built its biggest lead of 14 points on two separate occassions with the last being at 57-43 at the 16:47 mark when senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a three-pointer. CWRU then outscored the Jackets 20-9 to close to within three points at 66-63 with 9:22 left when junior forward Brad Sutton canned a three-pointer. Undaunted, B-W went on a 21-10 run to build its lead back to 14 points at 87-73 with 2:42 left when senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairvierw) made one of two foul shots.
 
In addition to Santiago, the other four starters all scored in double figures as Brown had 18, Schuler and junior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Highland) each had 16 points and Sekerak had 14.
 
For CWRU, senior center Mason Conrad led the way with 18 points.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Wednesday, December 5 when they open 2007-2008 Ohio Athletic Conference play at home by hosting Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #5 HOST Case Western Reserve University

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Greater Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Thursday, November 29 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. This is the home opener for the Yellow Jackets.

     

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. Pre-Game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track as they host Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University tonight in their home opener.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 1-3 record following an 87-84 loss to SUNY Cortland in the consolation game of the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Holiday Inn Airport Tournament. In the first round, B-W dropped a 98-68 decision to Ohio Wesleyan University. Following a season-opening win, B-W has lost three straight games.

Case Western Reserve enters this game with a 5-1 record following an 88-51 victory against Oberlin College in University Circle. The Spartans have won four straight games, including a pair last weekend when they won their own tournament.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Case Western Reserve-- This is the 140th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and the combination of Case Western Reserve University/ Case Tech and Western Reserve University. B-W has played Case more times than any other opponent in school history. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 73-66, including a 94-91 victory in the last meeting in 2004. B-W has won two straight against the Spartans.

In the B-W's Last Game vs. SUNY Cortland -- SUNY Cortland -- 87, Baldwin-Wallace -- 84 -- In B-W's last game, an 87-84 loss against SUNY/Cortland in the consolation game of the University of Rochester Holiday Inn Airport Tournament in Rochester, New York, the Yellow Jackets were led by a game-high 31 points from 6'4" sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville).

Joining Brown in double figures was 5'11" senior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) with 15 points and 5'11" senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) with 10 points and seven assists. Brown was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the game for his efforts.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- After four games, Baldwin-Wallace College averages 78.5 ppg. and gives up 83.5 ppg. for a minus 5.0 differential. B-W shoots 49.3 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three point range and 70.7 percent from the free throw line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 11 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and Kyle Brown at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak and Brendan Schuler to be joined by either 5'9'' junior Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) or 6'1" sophomore Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior).

Through four games, Brown is the leading scorer at 21.3 points per game. He is also grabbing 4.5 rebounds per game and shoots 50.8 percent from the field (31-of-61), including 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from three-point range. Schuler is second in scoring with 15.0 ppg., with a team-leading 19 assists. Sekerak is the best on-the-ball defender and scores 11.0 ppg., has a team-high six steals and is second with 12 assists. Bene also averages in double figures in scoring at 10.3 ppg., and leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 rpg. Santiago is averaging 5.3 ppg. and 2.5 rpg. and started against SUNY/Cortland. Tumblin started the first three games of the season and is averaing 5.3 ppg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play either Tumblin or Santiago and utilize 6'2" sophomore guard/ forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior), 5'11 freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ Beliot West Branch), 6'5" freshman Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman) and 5 ' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley). Tumblin is tied for fifth in scoring with 5.3 ppg., Meeder averages 4.7 ppg. in three games, Rockwell scores 4.0 ppg. and tallies 2.5 rpg., Glass scores 1.7 ppg. in three contests and Cayton averages 2.3 ppg. in three games.

Case Western Reserve University Probable Starters and Information-- Head Coach Sean McDonnell is no stranger to Northeast Ohio basketball as he previously served as head coach for the Hiram College Terriers for three seasons before coming to CWRU. As a team, Case averages 83.0 points per game and shoots 46.2 percent from the field, 41.8 percent from three-point range and 65.5 percent from the foul line. Defensively. the Spartans allow 69.3 ppg.

Look for McDonnell to rely on 6' 6'' senior center Mason Conrad in the post. Conrad leads the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg. and rebounding at 8.0 rpg. He has canned 61.5 percent of his field goal attempts and leads the team with five blocked shots. Starting along with Conrad in the post, expect to see 6' 4'' sophomore Anthony Durr. Durr scores 5.2 ppg. and adds 6.3 rpg. In the backcourt, the three guard lineup probably will consist of 5' 11'' senior Brandon Bradford, 6' 2'' junior Steve Young and 6' 0'' freshman Kevin Herring. Young is second on the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and tops the squad with 18 three-pointers and nine steals. Herring averages 10.2 ppg. and has 14 assists and 10 triples. Bradford scores 9.2 ppg. and tops the team with 24 assists.

Off the bench, look for McDonnell to utilize 6' 7" junior post Brad Sutton, 6' 4" freshman guard Alex Hildebrandt and 6' 1'' freshman guard Colin Mulholland. Sutton can be considered Case's sixth man as he averages 10.8 ppg., grabs 5.3 rpg. and has 10 three-pointers. Hildebrandt chips in with 3.8 ppg. and Mulholland scores 4.5 ppg. and has nine threepointers.

In CWRU's Last Game Versus Oberlin -- In CWRU's last game, an 88-51 victory against Oberlin College on Tuesday in University Circle, Young led the team in scoring with 18 points and Herring also was in double figures with 10 points. Fifteen of the 17 players that Sean McDonnell played scored. CWRU built a 49-19 halftime lead and coasted to victory.

Brown Named to All-Tourney Team; Good Start to B-W Career -- Kyle Brown was named to the all-tournament team at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Airport Holiday Inn Tournament. In the two games, Brown scored 44 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He had a career-high 31 points against SUNY Cortland. Brown also made the all-tournament team two weeks ago at Penn State Behrend (Pa.). He transferred to B-W this fall after spending his freshman season at Division II Hillsdale (Mich.) College.

Yellow Jackets Picked Fifth in OAC Preseason Poll -- The Yellow Jackets were picked by the Ohio Athletic Conference coaches to finish fifth in the OAC preseason poll. B-W received 52 points and trailed fourth place Ohio Northern University by one point. Defending OAC regular season and OAC Tournament champ Capital University was the favorite and received eight of 10 first place votes and 80 points. Heidelberg College got one first place vote and had 61 points and John Carroll University had one first place vote and 60 points.

OAC Opener Versus Mount Union Next Wednesday -- On Wednesday, December 5, the Yellow Jackets will host rival Mount Union College in their OAC opener at 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gym.

Steve Bankson is Fourth All-Time in the OAC With 409 Coaching Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 400 victories and has a 409-316 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 690 career wins in 44 years overall and a 690-430 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
