The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University on Saturday, January 26, 2008 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 3:00 p.m. This is the 10th OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets and the second of two regular season meetings versus the Crusaders.

         

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, broadcasts selected Yellow Jacket games, home and away. The games also can be heard via the WBWC's Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show begins 15 minutes prior to tipoff. Pre-game Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts ninth-ranked (d3hoops.com) and first place Capital University in the first game during the second round of OAC regular season play. B-W brings a 3-2 home record into the contest.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-11 overall and 2-7 OAC record following a 100-96 loss at Heidelberg College on January 23 in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The Yellow Jackets have lost four straight games.

Capital enters the game with a 14-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 OAC record following its 79-53 win against Marietta College on January 23 at The Capital Center in Columbus. The Crusaders have won six straight games.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Capital -- This is the 86th meeting between B-W and Capital in men's basketball with Capital leading the series, 46-39. Capital won the first game this season, on January 5 by a 103-76 score in Columbus. In the last 11 contests, Capital has a 6-5 advantage. B-W last beat the Crusaders, 81-78, in last seasons second meeting on Jan. 20, 2007.

In The First B-W versus Capital Game on Jan. 5 in Columbus: Capital -- 103, B-W -- 76 -- In the first of two regular season matchups between B-W and Capital, the Crusaders dominated the Yellow Jackets, 103-76, on Jan. 5, 2008 in Columbus. B-W was led by junior 6'6" post Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with 17 points, 6'1" sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had 15 points and 6' 0" senior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) and 6'4" forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) each had 13 points. Capital was led by current 6'6'' junior wing Nate Stahl with 18 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 81.4 points per game and allows 84.9 ppg. for a minus 3.5 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 47.2 percent (471-of-998) from the field, including 39.0 percent (135-of-346) from three-point range, and 73.6 percent (226-of-307) from the free throw line.  They average 33.0 rpg. and give up 37.4 rpg. for a minus 4.4 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start Andrew Bene and either 6'2" sophomore Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) or Kyle Brown (Strongsville) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Louis Tumblin and Brendan Schuler to start. Brown tops the team in scoring at 17.4 ppg., is second with 4.5 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers with 38. Schuler is second in scoring at 16.4 ppg., leads the team and OAC in assists with 96 and is second with 34 three-pointers and 24 steals. Bene is third in scoring at 12.9 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.2 rpg. and is first with 32 blocked shots. Tumblin averages 11.1 ppg. and 4.4 rpg., and is third with 30 assists and 20 threepointers.  Sekerak averages 8.5 ppg., leads the team with 38 steals. He also is second with 36 assists and grabs 3.8 rpg.  Glass has started the past four games and scores 4.9 ppg. and grabs 2.1 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 5'10" junior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark), 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch) and 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) to all possibly see action. Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.6 ppg. and has canned 18 three-pointers.

In Baldwin-Wallace's Last Game on Jan. 23 at Heidelberg College in Tiffin: Heidelberg -- 100, B-W -- 96 -- In B-W's last game, a 100-96 loss at Heidelberg on Jan. 23 in Tiffin, the Yellow Jackets were led by Andrew Bene's career-high 30 points and team-high tying five rebounds. B-W rallied from 18 points down with 9:51 remaining to cut the Student Prince lead to one point on three separate occassions but just couldn't get the lead. Also scoring in double figures were Louis Tumblin with 19 points, Brendan Schuler with 12 and Tyler Sekerak with 10 points. Heidelberg shot 55 percent from the floor for the game and outrebounded B-W, 37-32. The Jackets also shot 52.3% from the floor.

Capital Information and Probable Starters -- Capital scores 81.4 ppg. and allows 69.8 ppg. for a plus 11.6 ppg. differential. The Crusaders shoot 45.7% (446-of-976) from the field, including 36.9% (121-of-328) from three-point range, and 70.6% (290-of-411) from the free throw line. Capital also grabs 41.5 rpg. and gives up 33.4 rpg. for a plus 8.1 rpg. differential.

Look for veteran Head Coach Damon Goodwin to start 6'5" senior Steve Kyser and 6'8'' senior Ben Gunn in the post and 6'3'' junior Ryan Wood, 6'2'' freshman D.J. Frazier and 6'6" junior Nate Stahl in the backcourt. Overall, Goodwin will rotate 11-to-13 different players. Kyser leads the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. and in rebounding with 5.4 rpg. He is shooting 51.9 percent (82-of-158) from the field and also has 10 three-pointers. Stahl is second in scoring with 12.6 ppg., second with 4.6 rpg. and second with 31 three-pointers. He also has 30 assists. Wood is third on the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg., second in assists with 33 and first in steals with 16 and three-pointers with 37. Frazier tallies 6.9 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg. and is first on the team with 35 assists. Gunn scores 3.5 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg. and leads the team and OAC with 40 blocks.

Off the bench, look for Goodwin to mainly utilize 5'9'' junior point guard Jake Fanning, 6'5'' junior post Casey Brown, 6'6'' junior forward Ross Niekamp, 6'1'' junior guard Jamie Yoder and 6'6'' junior forward Quintin Mitchell.  Niekamp is the leading scorer off the bench at 7.3 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and has 17 triples. Brown adds 6.4 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg. and has passed for 26 assists.

In the Crusders Last Game on Jan. 23 versus Marietta College in Columbus: Capital -- 79, Marietta -- 53 -- In Capital's last game, a 79-53 win against Marietta on Jan. 23 at The Capital Center in Columbus, the Crusaders were led by Nate Stahl and Steve Kyser with a game-high 19 points each. Stahl made four-of-six three-pointers and 15 Crusaders  saw playing time in the route. Capital opened up a 21-point halftime lead and its lead reached a high of 29 points with 13:05 left in the second half.

Better at Home, But Tough on the Road -- The Yellow Jackets are 3-2 at home this season, but 0-5 in OAC road games.

Brendan Schuler Enters The Top 30 in B-W All-Time Scoring -- In Wednesday's 100-96 loss to Heidelberg College, Brendan Schuler scored 12 points to give him 1,063 career points and move him into 29th place on the all-time scoring list by passing Kenn Kaminski (1987-91). In addition, Schuler also stands fourth in career assists with 434 and is now ninth in three pointers with 172.

Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs six more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. Bankson also has 694 career wins in 44 years overall and a 694-438 mark.  In addition, Bankson is fourth all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 413 victories. He has a 413-324 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W and in the OAC.

Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director, is a member of three halls-of-fame and received a national leadership award at last year's NABC National Convention.
