BEREA, OHIO -- Nate Stahl scored 18 points as the Capital University Crusaders men’s basketball team defeated the Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets, 103-76, today (Saturday, January 5, 2008) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at The Capital Center in Columbus.
With its victory, Capital improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W fell to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the OAC.
In the first half, following a number of lead changes, the Yellow Jackets took a 13-9 lead at the 15:06 mark when sophomore forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville). Capital then went on a 23-10 run to take a 32-23 lead at the 8:03 mark when senior forward Steve Kyser made a layup. The Crusaders extended their lead to 15 points at 45-30 when Kyser made a three-pointer with 3:03 left before the intermission. B-W went on a 10-4 run, capped by a senior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) layup with 13 seconds left, to trail at halftime, 49-40.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets closed to within 51-46 with 18:16 left when sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) made a layup. Capital then went on a 32-11 run to build its lead to 26 points at 83-57 with 8:35 left when Kyser scored, was fouled and made a foul shot. The closest B-W would get after that point was 20 points at 91-71.
In addition to Stahl, Kyser had 16, and Ryan Wood and Quintin Mitchell each had 12 points. B-W was led by junior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Media Highland) with 17 points, Tumblin with 15 and Schuler and Brown with 15 each.
B-W will next play on Wednesday, January 9 when it hosts Otterbein College in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Columbus, Ohio and play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University on Saturday, January 5 in The Capital Center at 2:00 p.m. This is the fourth OAC regular season game for the Yellow Jackets.

B-W comes into this game with a 4-6 overall and 1-2 OAC mark following an 82-65 win against Earlham (Ind.) College in the consolation game at the Franklin (Ind.) College Goaltenders-Bankers Classic Tournament on December 28-29, 2007. B-W lost to Aurora (Ill.) University, 78-71, in its first game at the Franklin tourney.
Capital enters this contest with a 8-2 overall and 3-0 OAC record following a 71-65 loss to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University in Columbus on Dec. 31. The loss ended Capital's seven-game winning streak.
The All-Time Series Between B-W and Capital -- This is the 85th meeting between B-W and Capital in men's basketball with the Crusaders leading the all-time series, 45-39. The teams split last seasons matchups with each team winning on its home floor. Capital beat B-W, 93-85, on Dec. 2, 2006 in Columbus and the Yellow Jackets defeated the Crusaders, 81-78, on Jan. 20, 2007 in Berea. In the last 10 meetings between the two teams, each school has won five games.

In Last Year's Second B-W vs. Capital Game: B-W -- 81, Capital -- 78 -- In the second matchup between B-W and Capital, the Yellow Jackets beat the Crusaders, 81-78, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Jan. 20, 2007. Current B-W 5' 11'' senior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) hit a game-winning threepointer with 3.9 seconds remaining. B-W was led by Tori Davis with 21 points and Capital was led by current 6' 3'' junior guard Ryan Wood with 18 points.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Baldwin-Wallace College scores 79.0 points per game and allows 79.5 ppg. for a minus 0.5 ppg. differential. B-W shoots 47.1 percent (280-of-594) from the field, including 40.8 percent (91-of-223) from three-point range, and 70.9 percent (139-of-196) from the free throw line. They average 32.5 rpg. and give up 36.8 rpg. for a minus 4.3 rpg. differential.
Look for veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players court time. Traditionally, B-W likes to run with the basketball and will play aggressive man-to-man defense. Look for Bankson to start 6' 6" junior Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 6' 4" sophomore transfer Kyle Brown (Strongsville via Division II Hillsdale College, Mich.) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6' 0" senior defensive specialist Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), 6' 1'' sophomore guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) and Brendan Schuler to start.
Brown tops the team in scoring at 19.7 ppg., is second with 5.3 rpg. and has canned the most three-pointers (26) and overall field goals (63). Schuler, this week's OAC Co-Player of the Week, is second in scoring at 17.1 ppg., leads the team and OAC in assists with 56 and has an impressive 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also leads the team in field goal shooting at 57.8 percent on 59-of-102 attempts, including 53.3% percent from three-point range on 23-of-43 attempts. Bene is third in scoring at 10.7 ppg. and leads the squad by pulling down 7.6 rpg. and in blocked shots with 19. Sekerak averages 9.4 ppg., leads the team and OAC in steals with 31, is second with 24 assists, and is third on the team in rebounds with 3.7 rpg. Tumblin averages 8.2 ppg. and 3.2 rpg., and is third with 16 assists.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 5'10" junior All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark), 5'11" freshman guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview), 6' 5" freshman forward Kyle Rockwell (Salem/ West Branch), 5' 7" freshman point guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley), 6' 2" sophomore wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) and 6' 5" freshman post Jeff Cannan (Dublin/ Coffman) to all possibly see action. Santiago tops the players off the bench with 7.4 ppg. and 11 three-pointers.

College Goaltenders-Bankers Classic Tournament: B-W -- 82, Earlham (Ind.) -- 65 -- In B-W's last game, an 82-65 win over Earlham (Ind.) College in the consolation game in the Franklin (Ind.) College Goaltenders-Bankers Classic Tournament, the Yellow Jackets were led by Brendan Schuler with 24 points and six assists. In addition, Kyle Brown had 17 points and six rebounds. Andrew Bene led B-W on the boards with seven rebounds and Tyler Sekerak had a game-high five steals. B-W also set a school-record by attempting 31 three-pointers and tied a school mark by making 14 triples. For his 50-point, two-game effort, Schuler earned all-tournament team accolades.
In B-W's First-Round Game on Dec. 28 versus Aurora (Ill.)at Franklin (Ind.): Aurora -- 78, B-W -- 71 -- In B-W's opening round game of the Franklin (Ind.) College Goaltenders-Bankers Classic Tournament, the Yellow Jackets lost to Aurora University, 78-71. B-W was led by Brendan Schuler with 26 points and seven rebounds. Also in double figures was Kyle Brown with 23 points. Andrew Bene had a team-high 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Capital Information and Probable Starters -- Capital scores 78.4 ppg. and allows 70.7 ppg. for a plus 7.7 ppg. differential. The Crusaders shoot 46.0% (273-of-593) from the field, including 35.3% (72-of-204) from three-point range, and 67.2% (166-of-247) from the free throw line. Capital also grabs 38.8 rpg. and gives up 34.1 rpg. for a plus 4.7 rpg. differential.
Look for veteran Head Coach Damon Goodwin to start 6' 5'' senior Steve Kyser and 6' 8'' senior Ben Gunn in the post. On the wing, expect to see 6' 6'' junior Nate Stahl and 6' 3'' junior Ryan Wood. Goodwin has also switched between 6' 2'' freshman wing D.J. Frazier or 5' 9'' junior point Jake Fanning to round out the starting five. Kyser leads the team in scoring at 13.8 ppg., is tied for the team lead in rebounds with 4.6 rpg., and his 53.3 shooting percentage (48-90) is second on the team. Stahl is second in scoring with 13.0 ppg. and rebounds with 4.3 rpg., but is first in assists with 21 and three-point shooting percentage as he shoots 40.4 (19-47) percent from beyond the arc. Wood is third on the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg. and is first in assists (21), steals (eight), and free throw shooting percentage at a 74.1 percent clip (20-27). Frazier tallies 6.9 ppg. and is first on the team with 21 assists and 4.6 rpg. Gunn scores 3.0 ppg., leads the team with 23 blocks, and is second with 4.3 rpg. Fanning averages 1.3 ppg.
Off the bench, look for 6' 5" junior post Casey Brown, 6' 6" junior forward Ross Niekamp, 6' 1" junior guard Jamie Yoder and 6'6'' junior forward Quintin Mitchell. Brown is the leading scorer off the bench at 7.9 ppg. and Niekamp scores 7.7 ppg.
In the Crusaders Last Game on Dec. 31 Versus Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) in Columbus: Carnegie Mellon -- 71, Capital-- 65 -- In Capital's last game, a 71-65 loss on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2007) against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University at The Capital Center in Columbus, the Crusaders were led by Steve Kyser with a game-high 19 points. Also in double figures for the Crusaders was junior guard Nate Stahl with 11 points and junior guard Ryan Wood with 10 markers.

Schuler Named to All-Tourney Team; OAC Co-Player of the Week -- Brendan Schuler was named to the alltournament team at the Franklin (Ind.) College Goaltenders-Bankers Classic and as this week's OAC Co-Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Marietta guard Isaiah Creasap.
Schuler scored 50 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and passed for eight assists in the two games. He had 26 points in a 78-71 loss to Aurora (Ill.) University and 24 points, including five three-pointers, in an 82-65 win versus Earlham (Ind.) College in the consolation game.
Schuler Nearing 1,000 Points -- Brendan Schuler enters the Capital game with 971 career points and is 29 points shy of becoming the 35th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He also is fifth all-time with 396 assists and 10th with 161 three-pointers.
Record-Setting -- In the 82-65 win versus Earlham (Ind.), B-W tied the school-record for three-pointers made with 14 and set a school-record with 31 three-point attempts.
Bankson Nearing 700 Career Wins -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson needs nine more victories to reach the 700-mark for his career. He is tied for third all-time in OAC history and is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 412 victories and has a 412-318 record in 27-plus seasons at B-W. Bankson also has 693 career wins in 44 years overall and a 693-432 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.
