Wilmington College Men Beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 75-68, in an OAC Game in Wilmington

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore guard Justin Gaines scored 15 points as the Wilmington College men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 75-68, today (Saturday, February 3, 2007)  in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington.

With its win, Wilmington is now 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the OAC and swept the season series against B-W.  The Yellow Jackets are now 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Gaines for the Quakers, freshman forward Brandon Rogers had 12 points and sophomore guard Kerry Wilkinson had 11.  Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian) led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 17 points and freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had 11.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an 10-5 lead at the 15:06 mark when Davis made a jump shot. Then Wilmington went on a 21-8 run to take a 26-18 lead at the 7:31 mark when sophomore center Sam Lahmers made a jumper.  B-W then went on a 15-8 run to close within one point at 34-33 with 34 seconds left before the intermission when Tumblin made one of two foul shots.  Wilmington led at halftime, 36-33.

In the second half, B-W went on a 6-2 run to take a 39-38 lead at the 17:32 mark when junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry Pa./ Corry) made a three-pointer.  Wilmington then went on a 13-4 run to lead 51-43 at the 12:55 mark when Gaines canned a triple. B-W went on a 7-4 run to close to within two points at 55-53 at the 10:30 mark when Tumblin made a jumper and again at 66-64 with 3:25 left when sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinkley/ Medina Highland) made a jumper, but that was as close as B-W would get as the Quakers  closed on a 9-4 run to win the game and sweep the series.

The Yellow Jacket men next play on Wednesday, February 7 when they travel to Westerville to play OAC rival Otterbein College in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #21 at Wilmington College

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Wilmington, Ohio on Saturday, February 3, 2007 to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m . This is the second of two regular season games between the two schools.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game and remain in the hunt for the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 13-7 overall and 8-5 OAC record following their 93-80 victory against Heidelberg College last Wednesday (Jan. 31) in Berea. B-W is currently tied with Heidelberg for fourth place in the OAC Standings but just one game back of league-leaders Capital University, John Carroll University and Ohio Northern University and just one game ahead of its next two opponents, Wilmington and Otterbein College (Feb. 7 in Westerville).

The Quakers enter this game at 12-8 overall and 7-6 in the OAC following their 71-67 loss at Muskingum College last Wednesday (Jan. 31) in New Concord. Wilmington has won four of its last six games, including a win at B-W on January 17 (see more below).

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Wilmington-- Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington have previously met 19 times in men's basketball. B-W leads the all-time series, 13-6, but the Quakers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 95-88 in overtime, in the last meeting between the two teams on January 17, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. B-W won two-of-three meetings a year ago, including a 64-63 victory against the Quakers in the semifinals of the 2006 OAC Tournament in Berea.

The Last Meeting on January 13, 2007 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 88, Wilmington -- 95-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Wilmington, on January 13, 2007 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Quakers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 95-88 in overtime. Leading the way for Wilmington were 6'7" freshman forward Brandon Rogers and 6'1" sophomore guard Kerry Wilkinson with 19 points each. B-W was led by 6'4" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) with 29 points. In addition to Davis, 5'11" junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored 22 points and had seven assists and both 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) and 6'0" junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) each had 11 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.8 points per game and give up 73.3 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.5 ppg. B-W is grabbing 36.4 rebounds per contest, 4.4 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 48.9 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from three-point range and 74.6 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start Tori Davis and 6'6" sophomore Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for Tyler Sekerak, Brendan Schuler and 5'11" sophomore wing Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to start.  Davis tops the team in scoring at 22.0 points per game, in rebounding with 8.6 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.2 percent on 150-of-230 attempts and with 44 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.4 ppg, grabs 3.7 rpg. and tops the team with 115 assists, shoots a team-leading 92.6 percent (50-of-54) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 44 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 6.7 ppg., is second with 5.3 rpg., shoots 50.0 percent (54-of-108) from the floor and 69.4 percent (25-of-36) from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 11.7 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and is second on the team with 37 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.4ppg.,has 16 triples and is third with 15 steals.

Off the bench, look for Chad Clark, 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin with 5.5 ppg. and has 17 three-pointers. Clark scores 8.1 ppg. and grabs 2.6 rpg. Jesko scores 3.9 ppg. and has 17 triples.

Wilmington College Probable Starters and Information-- The Quakers score 73.2 points per game and give up 69.0 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 4.2 ppg. Wilmington is grabbing 32.0 rebounds per contest, 3.5 less per game than its opponents. Wilmington shoots 47.4 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from three-point range and 67.8 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Scott Reule to start 5'11" junior guard Zach Broermann and Kerry Wilkinson to start in the backcourt and 6'4" junior Scott Walters and 6'5" junior Fred Harrison to start in the wing position and 6'7" sophomore Sam Lahmers to start in the post position. Broermann scores is second in scoring with 12.0 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg. Wilkinson scores 7.2 ppg. has 37 steals on the season. Walters averages 4.8 ppg. and grabs 3.9 rpg. Harrison scores teamleading 12.4 ppg. and leads the team in both steals and blocks with 45 and 24, respectively. Lahmers scores 7.2 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Coach Reule to utilize many players in his rotation. Look for 6'2" sophomore David Diaby, 6'3" junior Nick Berter, 6'3" sophomore Justin Gaines to see some action in the backcourt and 6'7" sophomore Kevin Colson, Brandon Rogers to see the time in the wing position. Diaby scores 3.1 ppg. and grabs 0.9 rpg. Berter scores 3.0 ppg. and 1.4 rpg. Gaines averages 8.9 ppg. and has 19 steals on the season. Colson averages 4.8 ppg. and 2.7 rpg.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Heidelberg College on Jan. 31 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 93, Heidelberg -- 80-- In B-W's last game, the Yellow Jackets beat Heidelberg College, 93-80 in Berea. Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 25 points and became B-W's all-time leading scorer and moved into 10th place on the all-time OAC scoring list when he scored with 5:31 left in the game. Davis, who made 11-of-17 field goal attempts, also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and blocked five shots. Brendan Schuler followed with 20 points and five assists, Dennis Santiago had 15 points and seven rebounds and Chad Clark came off the bench to scored 12 points and make six-ofeight field goal attempts. The keys to the victory for B-W was making 55.7 percent of its field goal attempts (34-of-61), including seven-of-12 three-pointers, and outrebounding the much taller Student Princes, 48-35.

In Wilmingtons Last Game Versus Muskingum on Jan. 31 in New Concord, Ohio: Muskingum -- 71, Wilmington-- 67 in Overtime-- In Wilmington's last game, a 71-67 overtime loss at Muskingum College, the Quakers were led by Fred Harrison with a team-high 18 points and Zach Broermann had 12 points, all on three-pointers. Keys to the loss for the Quakers was connecting on just 44.1 percent of their field goal attempts (26-of-59) and committing 19 turnovers.

Tori Davis Becomes B-W's All-Time Leading Scorer -- With his 25 points on January 31 against Heidelberg College, Tori Davis surpassed Dean Martin (1969-73) and became the all-time leading scorer in school history with 2,066 points. Martin had 2,062. In addition, Davis is fifth all-time in rebounding with 877 and first with 227 career blocked shots.  He also holds multi other school single-game and single-season records.

Top 10 All-Time in OAC History -- In addition to passing Martin on the B-W all-time scoring list, Tori Davis passed him and Kenyon's Terry Appleton (1973-77) to rank ninth on the all-time OAC scoring list. Both Martin and Appleton had 2,062 points. Next on the OAC list is Kenyon's Scott Rogers (1976-80) who had 2,149 career points.

 

Steve Bankson is Fourth All-Time in OAC Coaching Wins -- When B-W beat Muskingum, 74-61, on Saturday, January 6 in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution.

Bankson already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 403 victories and has a 403-311 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 684 career wins in 43 years overall and a 684-425 mark overall. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.

Next up on the all-time OAC Coaching Win List for Bankson is The College of Wooster legend E.M. "Mose" Hole, who had 412 wins in 32 years of the sideline.
