Baldwin-Wallace Falls to Wilmington, 95-88, in Men's Basketball

BEREA, OHIO — Senior captain Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School ) scored 29 points today (Saturday, January 13, 2007) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College, 95-88, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

Wilmington improves to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.  B-W falls to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the OAC.

In addition to Davis, junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) scored 22 points and added seven assists for the Yellow Jackets.  Senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/Ross) and junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry) were also in double-digits for the Yellow Jackets with 11 points each.  Brandon Rogers and Kerry Wilkinson each had 19 points to lead Wilmingon.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage at the 18:06 mark when Sekerak made his first of two three pointers in the half.  The Yellow Jackets continued to extend their lead with the biggest being 11 points at the 13:25 mark when freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) made a three pointer to make the score 18-7.  Wilmington stormed back, taking a 23-21 lead at the 4:46 mark when junior guard Fred Harrison made a layup.  B-W took the lead back at the 00:46 mark when Sekerak made his second three pointer of the game to make the score 33-30.  The two teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score 33-31. 

In the second half,  B-W jumped out early and extended their halftime lead to as much as 12 points, the biggest lead coming at the 7:30 mark when Clark made a jumper to make the score 66-54 .  The final 1:30 of the game was close as Wilmington tied the game back up at the 1:14 mark when Rogers made a jumper to tie the score 71-71.  Both B-W and Wilmington had chances to break the tie and win the game on their final possesions but neither could convert.

In overtime, Wilmington took the lead for most of the period.  B-W cut the lead to five points at the 00:08 mark when Schuler made a pair of free throws, making the score 93-88 but it was not enough as Wilmington dropped B-W 95-88.   

With his 29 points today, Davis now has 1,946 career points and moves into second place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list, surpassing his older brother Thad Davis (2001-2005), who had 1,921 career points. In addition, Davis now also has 846 career rebounds to rank seventh all-time and has a school career-record 215 blocked shots.

The Yellow Jacket next play on Wednesay, Jan. 17 when they travel to Tiffin to play Heidelberg College in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in an OAC game on Saturday, January 13, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of The Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m. This is the first of two games between the two schools during the regular season.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track and remain in first place in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference when it hosts a solid Wilmington College team in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-4 overall and 5-2 OAC record following their 83-74 loss to OAC rival Otterbein College on Wednesday (Jan. 10) in Berea. The loss ended a three-game winning streak and dropped B-W into a four-way tie for first place in the OAC with Capital University, Ohio Northern University and Heidelberg College.

The Quakers enter this game with a 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the OAC record following their 63-62 loss to fourth-ranked Ohio Northern University in Wilmington on Wednesday. After winning seven of their first 10 games, the Quakers have dropped three of their last four.

A Recent and Common Opponent.... and Loss -- Both B-W and Wilmington have played Otterbein in the past week and both lost by seven points. The only difference was that B-W lost at home on Wednesday and Wilmington lost at Otterbein in Westerville on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Wilmington -- Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington have previously met 18 times in men's basketball with B-W leading the all-time series, 13-5, including winning the last two meetings, including a 64- 63 decision in the semifinals of last year's OAC Tournament in Berea. The last Quaker win against B-W was a 64-61 triumph last season on Jan. 7, 2006.

The Last Meeting on February 24, 2006 in Berea in the Semifinals of the OAC Tournament: Baldwin-Wallace -- 64, Wilmington -- 63 -- In the third and final meeting of the 2005-2006 season with Wilmington, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Quakers 64-63 in the semifinals of the OAC Tournament in Berea. B-W went on to beat ONU in the OAC Championship Game the next evening. In its win versus Wilmington, current 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) led the way with 21 points and graduated All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth had 20 points. Eric Stirling led the Quakers with 20 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 77.5 points per game and give up 70.7 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 6.8 ppg. Davis tops the team in scoring at 20.6 points per game, in rebounding with 9.3 rpg., field goals shooting at 66 percent on 96-of-145 attempts and with 29 blocked shots. Schuler is third scoring at 12.0 ppg, grabs 3.4 rpg. and tops the team with 78 assists, shoots a team-leading 87 percent (26-of-30) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 30 three-pointers. Bene is scoring in scoring at 6.6 ppg., is second with 5.6 rpg., shoots 48 percent (36-of-75) from the floor and 71 percent (20-of-28) from the foul line. Santiago is second in scoring with 12.4 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. is second on the team with 28 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.2 ppg.,has 11 triples and third with 14 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin with 5.7 ppg. and has 14 three-pointers. Clark scores 7.3 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg. Jesko scores 4.4 ppg. and has 13 triples.

Wilmington College Probable Starters and Information-- The Quakers score 72.6 points per game and give up 68.4 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 4.2 ppg. Wilmington is grabbing 31.6 rebounds per contest,3.7 less per game than its opponents. Wilmington shoots 48 percent from the field, 36.7 percent from three-point range and 66.9 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Scott Reule to start 5'11" junior guard Zach Broermann and 6'1" sophomore guard Kerry Wilkinson to start in the backcourt and 6'4" junior Scott Walters and 6'5" junior Fred Harrison to start in the wing position and 6'7" sophomore Sam Lahmers to start in the post position. Broermann scores a team-leading 11.9 ppg. and grabs 3.6 rpg. Wilkinson scores 7.4 ppg. has 23 steals on the season. Walters averages 4.9 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. Harrison scores 11.4 ppg. and leads the team in both steals and blocks with 32 and 17, respectively. Lahmers scores 8.3 ppg. and grabs 3.7 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Coach Reule to utilize many players in his rotation. Look for 6'2" sophomore David Diaby, 6'3" junior Nick Berter, 6'3" sophomore Justin Gaines to see some action in the backcourt and 6'7" sophomore Kevin Colson, 6'7" freshman Brandon Rogers to see the time in the wing position. Diaby scores 2.6 ppg. and grabs 1.6 rpg. Berter scores 3.2 ppg. and 1.5 rpg. Gaines averages 9.4 ppg. and has 16 steals on the season. Colson averages 4.2 ppg. and 2.4 rpg.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Otterbein College on Jan. 10 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 74, Otterbein -- 83-- In B-W's last game, a 83-74 loss against Otterbein College on January 10 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets were led by BW was led by senior All-American forward Tori Davis with a game-high 30 points. In addition, junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler had 19, including five three-pointers. Davis also had a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots. The key to the loss was that the Cardinals outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 34-26, including 14-7 on the offensive end of the court, and committed four less turnovers.

In Wilmington's Last Game Versus Ohio Northern on Jan. 10 in Wilmington, Ohio: ONU -- 63, Wilmington-- 62-- In Wilmington's last game, a 63-62 loss to Ohio Northern on January 10 in Wilmington, the Quakers were led in scoring by Zach Broermann with 18 points, all on three-ponters, and three steals. Fred Harrison chipped in with 12 points. The key to the loss was the fact that ONU outrebounded the Quakers, 51-28, and Wilmington made just two of 10 foul shots. Wilmington forced ONU into making 25 turnovers.

Steve Bankson Becomes Fourth Coach in OAC History to Win 400 Games -- When B-W beat Muskingum last Saturday in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution. He already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 400 victories and has a 400-308 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 681 career wins in 43 years overall and a 681-422 mark overall. He also serves as the school's athletic director.

Tori Davis Has 1,917 Career Points and is Third All-Time at B-W -- Tori Davis enters this game with 1,917 career points and is third all-time in scoring in B-W history. Davis needs four more points to tie his older brother, former former All-American Thad Davis (2001-2005), for second place. Davis needs 146 points to pass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school record of 2,062 points and become B-W's all-time leading scorer.

In addition, Davis is seventh all-time in rebounding with 835 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 212 career blocked shots.
