Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Defeats Number Three Ranked Ohio Northern University

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior All-American foward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated third-ranked Ohio Northern University, 97-77, today (Saturday, December 9, 2006) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in Ada, Ohio at the ONU Sports Center.

With its victory, B-W is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.  With its loss, ONU is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC

In addition to Davis, junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview) and sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Midpark), each scored 19 points.  Junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Correy, Pa), added 13 points and senior forward Chad Clark (Freemont/Freemont Ross) came off the bench to add 12 points.  B-W made 32-of-52 field goals and shot 61.5 percent from the field.  B-W was also hot from three point range, making eight-of-twelve three pointers for a 66.7 percent average.  Ohio Northern was led by sophomore center Jake Cannan who scored 18 points.  Senior guard Greg Badenhop scored 13 points and senior guard Brian Lee came off the bench to score 12 points.

In the first half, B-W opened up an early 4-0 lead off of a Santiago layup at the 18:41 mark.  The two teams went back and forth throughout the first half.  B-W began to break away from the Polar Bears in the first half when Clark made both free throws at the 10:36 mark to extend B-W's lead to 28-20.  ONU cut the lead to 31-26 when Jake Cannan broke down the court for a layup with 8:19 left in the first half.  B-W extended its lead back to 10 points with 5:43 left in the half when Sekerak made a layup.  ONU later cut the lead to 41-38 off Cannan's layup at the 2:23 mark.  B-W had a good run late in the half to extend their lead to 51-39 at halftime.

In the second half, B-W kept a sizeable lead throughout the half, extending their lead to 15 points at the 10:36 mark when Schuler made a free throw completing the old-fashioned three-point play.  ONU cut the B-W lead to 10 points at the 7:54 mark when Loudan Hammersmith dunked the basketball.  The comeback was quickly erased though, when B-W extended it's lead to as much as 21 points, following a Clark jumper at the 1:24 mark. 

With his 24 points today, Davis now has 1,760  career points and is sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring chart.  His second blocked shot of the day gave him 192 for his career which surpassed his older brother, Thad Davis, who had the previous B-W career-record from 2001-2005.

The B-W men will next play on Saturday, December 16 when they host OAC foe Marietta College in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will seek to get back on the winning track when it travels to Ada, Ohio to play fourth-ranked Ohio Northern University in a key early-season Ohio Athletic Conference game. The Yellow Jackets and Polar Bears were picked one-two in the preseason OAC poll by leagues coaches and the two teams battled in last year's OAC Championship Game.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 3-2 overall and 0-1 OAC record following its 93-85 loss last Saturday in Columbus and against Capital University. The defeat ended a brief two-game win streak.

The Polar Bears of Ohio Northern are 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC following their 75-70 victory against Heidelberg College in Tiffin on Wednesday night. ONU opened its OAC schedule last Saturday (Dec. 2) by blasting Marietta College, 80-50, in Ada.

The All-Time B-W and ONU Series -- B-W and Ohio Northern have previously met 78 times in men's basketball with the Polar Bears holding a 50-28 advantage in the all-time series. B-W won two of three meetings a year ago, including a 91-84 triumph over ONU in the championship game of the OAC Tournament in Berea on February 25, 2006. The last ONU win came on February 15 in Ada by the score of 72-68.

The Last Game Against ONU, on February 25, 2006 in Berea in the OAC Championship Game: B-W -- 91, ONU -- 84 -- Baldwin-Wallace and Ohio Northern last met in the 2006 OAC Championship Game in the Ursprung Gym in Berea with B-W winning, 91-84 in overtime. The win gave B-W a berth in the 2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament. Current 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) led the way to victory by scoring a game-high 32 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. In addition, current 5'11" junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. ONU was led by 6'3" senior wing Bart Hostetler with 18 points, a game-high 15 rebounds and five assists.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 82.4 points per game and give up 74.2 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 8.2 ppg. B-W is grabbing 34.0 rebounds per contest, 3.0 more per game than its opponents. B-W shoots 48.1 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from three-point range and 72.5 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start Tori Davis and 6'6" sophomore Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" junior Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), Brendan Schuler and 6'1' freshman Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) to start in the backcourt. Davis tops the team in scoring at 21.0 points per game, in rebounding with 7.8 rpg., field goals percentage at 63.6 (35-of-55) and with seven blocked shots. Bene and Schuler are tied for second at 10.0 ppg. each. Bene also is second with 6.8 rpg., shoots 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from the floor and 80 percent (12-of15) from the foul line. Schuler also grabs 3.0 rpg. and tops the team with 23 assists and shoots a team-leading 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the charity stripe. Tumblin scores 8.0 ppg., grabs 2.6 rpg. and has six three-pointers. Sekerak scores 7.2 ppg. and tops the team with seven triples and nine steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in four games.  Santiago tops the "bench bunch" with 9.6 ppg., shoots 50 percent from the floor (17-of-34) and has five three-pointers.  Clark scores 7.0 ppg. and grabs 3.0 rpg. Jesko scores 4.6 ppg. and has five triples.

Ohio Northern University Probable Starters and Information-- The Polar Bears score 82.0 points per game and give up 57.0 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 25.0 ppg. Ohio Northern is grabbing 37.3 rebounds per contest,9.1 more per game than its opponents. ONU shoots 49.2 percent from the field, 34.2 percent from three-point range and 75.4 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Jeff Coleman to start 6'1" sophomore Kurtis Brown and 6"1" junior Kyle Gehle at the guard spots, 6'4" senior Greg Badenhop at the wing and 6'6" senior Michael Hunter and 6'8" sophomore Jake Cannan at the post positions. Badenhop tops the team in scoring at 20.2 ppg., has 19 three-pointers (19-of-46) and 14 assists and is second with 19 steals. Gehle is third in scoring at 12.8 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg. and has eight three-pointers. Cannan scores 8.7 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg. and shoots 57.5 percent from the floor (23-of-40). Brown scores 5.7 ppg., has seven triples and 12 assists. Hunter scores 3.6 ppg. and grabs 5.2 rpg. and has played and started in five-of-six games this season.

Off the bench, look for Bart Hostetler, 6'6" senior Sean Kobilis, 6'5" senior Ryan Lee, 6'7" sophomore Loudan Hammersmith, 6'2" sophomore Mitch Anderson and 6'4" senior Jared Bostelman all to see action. Hostetler is second in scoring at 13.3 ppg., first with 7.8 rpg., shoots 66.7 percent from the floor (30-of-45) and 80 percent from the foul line (20-of25) and tops the team with 15 assists and 20 steals. Lee scores 4.0 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg.

In B-W's Last Game versus Capital University on December 2 in Columbus, Ohio: Capital -- 93, B-W -- 85 -- In B-W's last game, a 93-85 loss to Capital University on December 2 in Columbus, senior All-American forward Tori Davis scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed five rebounds despite the loss. In addition to Davis, sophomore guard Dennis Santiago came off the bench to score 16 points and junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler had 14.

In Ohio Northern's Last Game versus Heidelberg on Dec. 6 in Ada, Ohio: Ohio Northern -- 75, Heidelberg -- 70 -- In Ohio Northern's last game, a 75-70 victory against Heidelberg College in Tiffin, the Polar Bears were led by senior forward Greg Badenhop's game-high 26 points. Bart Hostetler came off the bench to score 12 points and grab a game-high nine rebounds and Jake Cannan had 10 markers.

B-W is Picked to Win 2006-2007 OAC Title Again -- The B-W men are picked to win the OAC title again this year by the OAC Coaches. B-W received five first place votes and 75 points. Ohio Northern was picked second and received three first place votes and 74 points.

Defending OAC Regular Season and Tourney Champ -- B-W is the defending OAC regular season and OAC Tournament champion. Last year's regular season and OAC Tournament titles in the same season marked a first in school history. The regular season title was its first since the 1978-79 season and the fourth in school history. The Yellow Jackets have won five OAC Tournament titles (1966-67, 1995-96, 1997-98, 2004-05 and last season).

Tori Davis' Records -- Tori Davis currently ranks sixth all-time in scoring with 1,736 career points and needs 327 more this season to become B-W's all-time leading scorer. He would surpass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school-record of 2,062 career points. Davis already owns single-season records for points (703), field goal percentage (.644 on 250-of-388 attempts), scoring average (23.4 ppg.), free throws attempted (240) and made (176) and blocked shots (64 in 2004-2005).  His 190 career blocked shots tie him with his older brother, Thad Davis, who had 190 from 2001-2005.

Steve Bankson is B-W's Winningest Men's Basketball Coach -- Yellow Jackets veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest men's basketball coach in B-W's school history with 393 wins in 27 years. He has 674 victories in his 44-year career (674-420). Bankson is 393-306 at B-W, was 232-90 at Lorain County Community College and 49-24 in three seasons at the high school level. Bankson also serves as the Men's Director of Athletics.
