Baldwin-Wallace College Men Defeat Muskingum, 76-66, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO — Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School)scored 23 a game-high-tying points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 76-66, today (Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007) at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. It was B-W's fourth straight win versus the Fighting Muskies.

With its win, B-W is 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the OAC and is now tied for third place with Ohio Northern UNiversity with two regular season games left. The Fighting Muskies are now 11-11 overall and 5-11 in the OAC.

In addition to Davis, junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) had 17 points and freshman guard Louis Tumblin had a career-high 16 points. For Muskingum, freshman guard Cory Borquin came off the bench to lead the team with 23 points. He was aided by junior guard Brandon Todd with 13 points and freshman guard Pat Byrne with 11. 

In the first half, after two ties and three lead changes, the Yellow Jackets built a seven-point lead at 23-16 with 9:10 left before the intermission when freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) made a jump shot. The Fighting Muskies then outscored B-W 16-6 to take their largest lead at 32-29 with 1:12w left when freshman guard Pat Byrne made a foul shot to complete a three-point play. B-W scored the final four points of the half to lead 33-32 at the break.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 23-13 run to build their largest lead of 11 points at 56-45 at the 11:16 mark when freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/Senior) made two foul shots. The Muskies got as close as 56-52 with 9:00 left when Borquin made a three-pointer. B-W then had a 7-0 run to build another 11-point advantage. Muskingum could only get as close as six points after that point.

With his 23 points today, Davis remained in ninth place on the all-time OAC scoring list with 2,133 points and is 14 points shy of the eighth position. Davis also had eight rebounds to become the fifth player in B-W history to surpass the 900-rebound mark as he now has 905. Davis is B-W's all-time leading shot blocker with 232.

The Yellow Jacket men next play on Wednesday February 14 when they host OAC and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways and sweep a season series when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College in the Ursprung Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 14-8 overall and 9-6 OAC record following their 84-76 win at Otterbein College on Wednesday night in Westerville. B-W has won two of its last three games and is two games back of OAC leaders John Carroll University and Capital University (11-4) and one game back of third place Ohio Northern University (10-5) and tied for fourth place with Heidelberg College.

The Fighting Muskies enter this game at 11-10 overall and 5-10 in the OAC following their 64-58 win against Marietta College on Wednesday night in New Concord. Muskingum has won two of its last three games and is all alone in eighth place in the OAC Tournament. A win versus B-W would ensure the Fighting Muskies a spot in the upcoming OAC Tournament, Feb. 21-24.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Muskingum-- B-W and Muskingum have previously met 86 times in men's basketball. The Fighting Muskies lead the all-time series, 49-37, but B-W has won the last three contests, including a 74-61 victory on January 6, 2007 in New Concord. Muskingum's last win was a 65-62 decision in Berea on Feb. 12, 2005.

The Last Meeting on January 6, 2007 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 74, Muskingum -- 61-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Muskingum, on January 6, 2007 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Fighting Muskies, 74-61. Highlighting that win was veteran Head Coach winning his 400th career game at B-W and becoming the fourth coach in the 104-year history of the OAC to win 400 games. Leading the way for B-W was 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 5'11" junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored 14 points each. In addition, 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark) had 12 points and 6'6" sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 10. For Muskingum, 6'2" sophomore guard Trevor Scott led all-scorers with 20 points, 5'7" junior guard Brandon Todd had 18 and 6'2" freshman guard Pat Byrne added 11.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.6 points per game and give up 73.5 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.1 ppg. B-W is grabbing 36.1 rebounds per contest, 3.9 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 48.8 percent from the field, 39.6 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start Tori Davis and Andrew Bene at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" junior wing Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa), Brendan Schuler and Dennis Santiago to start. Davis tops the team in scoring at 22 points per game, in rebounding with 8.7 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.4 percent on 166-of-254 attempts and with 49 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.6 ppg, grabs 3.8 rpg. and tops the team with 125 assists, shoots a team-leading 92.3 percent (60-of-65) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 49 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 6.6 ppg., is second with 5.2 rpg., shoots 49.6 percent (58-of-117) from the floor and 72.5 percent (29-of-40) from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 11.4 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is second on the team with 39 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 7.0 ppg.,has 20 triples and is third with 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin averages 5.7 ppg. and has 19 three-pointers. Clark scores 7.6 ppg. and grabs 2.6 rpg. Jesko scores 3.6 ppg. and has 17 triples.

Muskingum College Probable Starters and Information-- The Fighting Muskies score 67.2 points per game and give up 64.8 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 2.4 ppg. Muskingum is grabbing 32.0 rebounds per contest,2 rebounds less per game than its opponents. Muskingum shoots 41.8 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from three-point range and 72.2 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Geno Ford to start 6'1" junior Jeremy Ady and 5'7" junior Brandon Todd in the backcourt, 6'2" junior Patt Byrne and 6'2" sophomore Trevor Scott in the wing and 6'4" sophomore Andy Glass in the post. Todd tops the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg., grabs 4.0 rpg.,is first on the team with 36 three-pointers, 112 assists and 51 steals. Scott averages 15.3 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., has 33 three-pointers and shoots 45.8 percent from three-points range Byrne scores 10.9 ppg., grabs 5.3 rpg. and has 30 steals. Ady scores 6.5 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and has 21 three-pointers. Glass, who is the older brother of B-W's Paul Glass, scores 6 ppg. and grabs 3.7 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Ford to play to utilize many players and look for 6'1" freshman guard Cory Bourquin, 6'6" senior forward Jason Dicken, and 6'7" sophomore center Andrew Chonko to receieve most of the playing time. Bourquin scores 5.5 ppg. and is third in three-pointers with 28. Dicken scores 5.0 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg. Chonko scores 3.2 ppg. In addition, 6'10" sophomore center Mike Seibert has played in 20 contests and scores 0.6 ppg. and grabs 1.0 rpg.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Otterbein College on Feb. 7 in Westerville, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Otterbein-- 76-- In B-W's last game, an 84-76 victory at Otterbein College on Wednesday (Feb. 7) night, Tori Davis led the way as he scored a game-high 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. In addtion, Tyler Sekerak scored 19 points and Brendan Schuler added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Keys to the win were shooting 52.7 percent from the floor, including making seven-of-12 three-pointers; and making 19-of-21 foul shots for 90.5 percent, including their final nine in the last 1:07 of the game.

In Muskingum's Last Game Versus Marietta on Feb. 7 in New Concord, Ohio: Muskingum-- 64, Marietta-- 58-- In Muskingum's last game, a 64-58 victory over OAC rival Marietta College in New Concord on Wednesday night, Brandon Todd scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and added eight assists for the Muskies. In addition to Todd, Pat Byrne scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Andy Glass had 11 points and five rebounds.

Steve Bankson Becomes Fourth Coach in OAC History to Win 400 Games -- When B-W beat Muskingum on Saturday, January 6 in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution. He already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 404 victories and has a 404-312 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 685 career wins in 43 years overall and a 685-426 mark overall. The College made a special presentation to Bankson on his latest milestone prior to the Yellow Jackets home game against Capital University on Saturday, January 20, 2007. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.

 

Tori Davis Has 2,110 Career Points and is First All-Time at B-W -- Tori Davis is B-W's all-time leading scorer with 2,110 career points and stands ninth all-time in OAC history. He needs 40 more points to surpass Kenyon's Scott Rogers (1976-80) for eighth place and 47 more to pass Kenyon's John Dunlop (1965-69) for seventh place.

In addition, Davis is fifth all-time in rebounding with 897 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 232 career blocked shots.
