Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Defeats Mount Union, 81-75, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO — Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) and sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) each scored 21 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 81-75, tonight (Wednesday, December 20, 2006) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  Santiago's 21 markers were a career-high.

The win was B-W’s third straight and the Yellow Jackets are now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.  With its loss, Mt. Union is 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the OAC

In addition to Davis and Santiago, freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) had a career-high 13 points.  Mt. Union was led by freshman guard Sam King with 15 points.  In addition, freshman center Justin Francis and freshman guard Nick Sefscik each had 11 points and senior forward Eric Fender added 11.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an early 8-4 lead at the 17:35 mark when Davis scored on a layup, was fouled and made the free throw. Following a 4-0 Mt. Union run to tie the score at 8-8, B-W went on a 11-4 run to take a seven-point lead at 19-12 with 12:28 left when Tumblin made a three-pointer. The Purple Raiders then outscored B-W 14-7 to tie it at 26-26 and then again at 29-29 before the Jackets took control. B-W went on a 12-1 run, including eight points by Santiago, to take its largest lead at 41-30 at the 2:41 mark when Santiago canned a trey. An 8-1 Mount run closed the gap to 42-38 at the intermission.

In the second half, Mount Union opened with a 10-4 run to take its first lead of the game at 48-46 at the 16:25 mark when freshman forward Chris Crawford scored on a jump shot. Following five lead changes and four more ties, B-W went on a 5-0 run to go from a 70-70 tie to a 75-70 lead with 1:56 left when Santiago canned a triple. Mt. Union got as close as 77-75 before Davis and sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinkley/Medina Highland) hit four foul shots in the final 15 seconds to seal the win.

With his 21 points tonight, Davis now has 1,804 career points and is now 37 shy of surpassing Yellow Jacket legend Bob Walter's (1959-63) 1,840 career point and move into fifth place on the all-time school scoring list.  He also has 770 career rebounds and tied an individual single-game high with seven blocked shots and now has a school career-record 201 overall.

The B-W men will next play on Wednesday, December 27 when they travel to Phoenix, Arizona and play Linfield (Ore.) College in the first round of the Cactus Hoop Jam Classic. B-W will then play either Colorado College or Edgewood (Wisc.) University in the second round on Dec. 28. The Jackets play their final game in Phoenix on Dec. 30.

None of the games in Phoenix will be broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM.  The next radio game is on Wednesday, January 3 when B-W travels to University Heights, Ohio to play Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team look to win its third straight game when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Mount Union College in Berea in the final OAC game prior to their holiday tournament in Phoenix.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-2 overall and 2-1 OAC record following their 65-57 win on Saturday, December 16 in Berea versus OAC rival Marietta College. It was B-W's second straight victory.

The Purple Raiders enter this game with a 4-3 overall and 1-2 OAC record following a 64-51 loss to Ohio Northern University in Alliance on Dec. 16.

The All-Time B-W and Mount Union Series -- B-W and Mount Union have previously met 116 times in men's basketball. B-W leads the overall series, 72-43, with B-W winning the last six contests, including a 96-84 victory on Feb. 22 in Berea to advance to the OAC semifinals. Mount Union's last win was an 82-74 victory in Berea in first round of the 2004 OAC Tournament.

The Last Meeting on February 22, 2006 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 96, Mount Union -- 84-- In the second meeting of the 2005-2006 season with Mount Union,current 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) led the way to victory by scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing six rebounds. In addition, current 6'0" junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) added a then career-high 18 points, including two three-pointers, and current 5'11" junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) added 14 points, including three triples. The Purple Raiders were led by current senior wing Eric Fender's 19 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 81.6 points per game and give up 72.1 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus +9.4 ppg. B-W is grabbing 34.4 rebounds per contest, four more per game than its opponents. B-W shoots 49.2 percent from the field, 37.3 percent from three-point range, and 73.9 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. Davis tops the team in scoring at 22.4 points per game, in rebounding with 8.3 rpg., field goal percentage at 62.8 (49-of-78) and with 11 blocked shots. Schuler is second in scoring at 11.1 ppg, has 10 steals,tops the team with 35 assists, and is first on the team with 12 triples. Bene is scoring 8.1 ppg., is second with 6.6 rpg., and shoots 56.4 percent (22-of-39) from the floor. Santiago tallies 10.9 ppg., and shoots 50 percent from behind the arc on nine-of-18 shooting. In his last three games, Santiago has been hot, knocking down 16-of-21 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range and seven-of-eight from the line, for a total of 44 points. Sekerak scores 7.6 ppg., and is first on the team with 11 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1'' freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name), and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in four games.

Clark tops the "bench bunch" with 8.2 ppg. Jesko averages 4.7 ppg.

Mount Union College Probable Starters and Information -- The Purple Raiders score 73.3 points per game and give up 65.9 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 7.4 ppg. Mount Union is grabbing 38.4 rebounds per contest, 2.3 more per game than its opponents. Mt. Union shoots 49.2 percent from the field, 37.3 percent from three-point range and 64.0 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Head Coach Lee Hood to start 6'0" freshman Sam King and 6'3" freshman Nick Sefscik in the backcourt, 6'3" senior Eric Fender at the wing and for 6'4" sophomore Stu Anglum and 6'6'' freshman Justin Francis to play the post positions. Anglum tops the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg. and in rebounding with 9.0 rpg. and shoots 51.3 perecent from the field. King averages 8.4 ppg. and tops the team with 32 assists. Fender is scoring 6.6 ppg. and grabs 5.3 rpg. Sefscik scores 6.3 ppg., and has tallied 13 assists. Francis rounds out the starting five at 6.0 ppg. and 4.1 rpg.

Look for Coach Hood to utilize his bench. Look for 6'7'' freshman postman Chris Crawford, 6'0'' sophomore guard Luke Conley, 5'9'' junior L.J. Helton, and 6'3'' junior wing Mike Fatigante.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Marietta on Dec. 16 in Berea: B-W -- 65, MC -- 57 -- In B-W's last game, a 65-57 victory against Marietta on December 16, Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets as he scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, passed for three assists and blocked two shots. In addition, Tom Jesko had a career-high 10 points. The Jackets' overcame an eight-point first half and 11-point second half (11:49 left in the game) deficits to win their second straight game. B-W's second half play was the key to its win as the Yellow Jackets shot 50 percent from the floor (11-of-22), including 66.7 percent from three-points range (four-of-six), and 80 percent from the foul line (12-of-15). Davis' two blocked shots increased his school career record to 194 overall.

In Mount Union's Last Game Versus Ohio Northern on Dec. 16 in Alliance: Ohio Northern -- 64, Mt. Union -- 51-- In Mt. Union's last game, a 64-51 loss to Ohio Northern University in Alliance on December 16, the Purple Raiders were led in scoring by Stu Anglum with 16 points. In addition, Sam King had 11 points and four assists. Keys to the loss, were Mt. Union shooting just 42.9 percent from the floor (18-of-42) and a dismal 38.1 percent from the foul line (eight-of-21) and committing 17 turnovers. ONU also won the rebounding battle, 41-36.

B-W Picked by OAC Coaches to Win the Conference -- In their annual teleconference on November 1, 2006 the OAC coaches picked B-W to win the 2006-2007 OAC title. A year ago, B-W won the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles for the first time in the same season in school history.

Santiago is Hot -- Sophomore guard Dennis Santiago became a starter two games ago (versus Ohio Northern) but his HOT play began three contests ago. During the streak, Santiago has scored 44 points (14.7 ppg.). He has made 16-of-21 field goals for 76.1 percent, including five-of-seven three-pointers, and seven-of-eight foul shots.

Tori Davis Has 1,783 Career Points to Rank Sixth All-Time at B-W -- Senior post player Tori Davis has scored 1,783 career points at B-W and is 57 points shy of cracking the Top Five all-time. Davis also needs 138 points to tie his brother, former former All-American Thad Davis (2001-2005) for second place, and 280 points to pass Dean Martin (1969-73) and become B-W's all-time leading scorer.

Steve Bankson is B-W's Winningest Coach in School History -- Head Coach Steve Bankson enters this game as the winningest men's basketball coach with 395 victories. His 395-306 school record gives him a .563 winning percentage. Bankson has 675 career wins overall. He also serves as the school's athletic director.
