Baldwin-Wallace College Men Defeat John Carroll University, 81-77, in Berea as Tori Davis is

Now Seventh on the All-Time OAC Scoring List

BEREA, OHIO — Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School )scored 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 81-77, tonight (Thursday, February 15, 2007) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, B-W is 16-8 overall and 11-6 in the OAC and have beaten JCU  six straight times, including 80-73 earlier this season on January 3 in University Heights. The Blie Streaks are now 16-8 overall and 12-5 in the OAC and drop into second place in the OAC by virtue of a Capital University win versus Heidelberg College..

In addition to Davis for the Yellow Jackets, junior guards Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) and Tyler Sekerak (Corry Pa./Corry) had 13 points each and sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) had 10. JCU was led by senior guard Pete Moran with 17 points, freshman guard Rudy Kirbus with 16 and senior forward Terry Walsh wuth 15.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead and the 18:01 mark when Sekerak made a three-pointer before JCU took over.  The Blue Streaks then outscored B-W 40-16 to take their largest lead of 20 points at 43-23 at the 6:15 mark when junior guard John Curran made a layup.  The Blue Steaks also led at the intermission, 54-38.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Blue Streaks 39-18 to gain their first advantage at 62-61 with 11:18 left on a steal and layup by Sekerak.  After three lead changes and one tie, JCU regained a six-point lead at 73-67 with 7:37 left when Kirbus scored on a layup.  B-W outscored JCU 8-2 to tie it at 75-all with 4:40 left when Davis made two foul shots. It was tied again at 77-77 with 3:35 left when senior center Derek Smith made a pair of foul shots sandwiched by a B-W timeout. B-W scored its winning at the 1:02 mark when Davis made a jumper. JCU had a chance to win it when a Walsh three-pointer was of the mark, and Bene ended the scoring with two foul shots with less than a second remaining.

With his 32 points tonight, Davis surpassed former Kenyon College players Scott Rogers (1976-80) and John Dunlop (1965-69) to move into seventh place on the all-time OAC scoring list with 2,165 points. Davis also has 915 career rebounds to rank fifth and is B-W’s all-time leading shot blocker with 237.

The Yellow Jacket men end the OAC regular season this Saturday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play the Marietta College Pioneers at 3:00 p.m. in the Ban Johnson Arena.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of The Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. This is the second of two regular season games between the two longtime rivals.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to stretch its winning streak to three games, move one game closer to first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings, beat OAC and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival and first place John Carroll University for the sixth straight time and keep the Cuyahoga Golden Hoops Trophy in Berea when they face the Blue Streaks in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 15-8 overall and 10-6 OAC record following their 76-66 win against Muskingum College last Saturday (Feb. 10) in Berea. B-W has won two straight games and is tied with Ohio Northern University for third place in the OAC standings and two games back of league-leaders JCU and Capital University (both at 12-4).

The Blue Streaks enter this game at 16-7 overall and 12-4 in the OAC following their 85-58 win against Marietta College last Saturday (Feb 10) in Marietta. JCU has won eight of its last nine games and is playing its best basketball of the season.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and John Carroll-- This is the 98th all-time meeting between B-W and John Carroll in men’s basketball. B-W leads the series between the two schools, 54-43, including an 80-73 win in University Heights in the first meeting this season on January 3, 2007. The Jackets' have won five straight games against JCU, including the 2005 OAC Tournament Championship game and two straight in the Ursprung Gym, including a 78-56 win a year ago. The last JCU win against B-W came on Januaryt 12, 2005 in Berea by the score of 70-68.

The First Year for the Golden Hoops Trophy -- Designed by former B-W Alumni Director Ted Theodore, the Cuyahoga Golden Hoops Trophy is presented to the winning team following each B-W versus JCU regular game. This is the first year for the trophy and the Yellow Jackets won the inaugural meeting 80-73 on January 3 in University Heights.

The Last Meeting on January 3, 2007 in University Heights: Baldwin-Wallace -- 80--, John Carroll -- 73-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and John Carroll, on January 3, 2007 in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 80-73. Leading the way for B-W was 5'11" junior guard Brendon Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored a career-high 25 points as he connected on six-of-eight threepointers, grabbed six rebounds and passed for three assists. In addition, 6'3" senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) made all seven of his shots from the floor and added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) scored 14 points. The Blue Streaks were led by 6'3" senior forward Terry Walsh with 20 points and 6'0" senior guard Pete Moran with 17 points. In addition, 6'5" senior forward Brandon Mimes had 13 points and 11 rebounds and 6'4" freshman guard Rudy Kirbus had 11 markers. The game featured 41 turnovers, 46 fouls and 52 foul shots.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.5 points per game and give up 73.2 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.3 ppg. B-W is grabbing 36 rebounds per contest, 4.3 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 49.1 percent from the field, 39.3 percent from three-point range and 75.4 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start Tori Davis and 6'6" sophomore Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" junior wing Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa), Brendan Schuler and Dennis Santiago to start. Davis tops the team in scoring at 22.0 points per game, in rebounding with 8.7 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.9 percent on 174-of-264 attempts and with 49 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.8 ppg, grabs 3.8 rpg. and tops the team with 131 assists, shoots a team-leading 92.5 percent (62-of-67) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 52 threepointers.  Bene is scoring 6.5 ppg., is second with 5.3 rpg., shoots 48.8 percent (59-of-121) from the floor and 73.8 percent (31-of-42) from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 11.2 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is second on the team with 39 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.8 ppg.,has 20 triples and is third with 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin with 6.1 ppg. and has 21 three-pointers. Clark scores 7.3 ppg. and grabs 2.6 rpg. Jesko scores 3.7 ppg. and has 17 triples.

John Carroll University Probable Starters and Information-- The Blue Streaks score 79.9 points per game and give up 74.7 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.2 ppg. John Carroll is grabbing 39.5 rebounds per contest,1.6 more per game than its opponents. John Carroll shoots 44.6 percent from the field, 32.3 percent from three-point range and 67.2 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Head Coach Mike Moran to play at least 11-to-12 players during the game. He will start 6'0'' senior guard Pete Moran, 6'4'' freshman guard/forward Rudy Kirbus, and 6'1'' senior guard Chris Day in the backcourt and 6'5'' senior forward Brandon Mimes and 6'3'' senior forward Terry Walsh in the post. Mimes tops the team in scoring and rebounds with 20.7 ppg. an 10.7 rpg. He also has 35 assists, 36 blocked shots and 40 steals. Walsh is second in scoring with 15.0 ppg., grabs 5.5 rpg., has a team-leading 46 three-pointers and has 39 assists and 27 steals and shoots 82.6 percent from the foul line. Moran scores 10.8 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg., has a team-leading 107 assists and is third with 29 steals. Day scores 8.7 ppg., grabs 3.7 rpg., is second with 31 steals, has 46 assists and has connected on 19 triples. Kirbus has started four games and scores 5.4 ppg.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" freshman guard Chris Zajac, 6'0" junior guard John Curran, 6'3" freshman guard Joe Haffey, 6'3'' senior forward Joe Kimener, 6'4'' freshman guard T.J. DiSanto, 6'7'' senior center Derek Smith and 6'6" freshman forward Brian Hamrick all to see action. Smith tops the "bench bunch" by scoring 6.3 ppg., grabbing 4.2 rpg. and shooting 57.1 percent from the floor.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Muskingum College on Feb. 10 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 76--, Muskingum-- 66-- In B-W's last game, the Yellow Jackets defeated Muskingum College, 76-66, in Berea last Saturday. Leading the way was Tori Davis with a game-high-tying 23 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six assists. He was also awarded the Al Sirat Grotto Player of the Game award. In addition,Brendan Schuler had 17 points and six assists and Louis Tumblin had a career-high 16 points. Keys in the win included shooting 56.8 percent from the floor on 25-of-44 attempts and 84 percent from the foul line on 21-of-25 attempts and outrebounding the smaller Muskies, 36-23.

In John Carroll's Last Game Versus Marietta on Feb. 10 in Marietta, Ohio: John Carroll-- 85, Marietta-- 58--In John Carroll's last game, the Blue Streaks defeated Marietta College, 85-58, in Marietta last Saturday. Leading the way for JCU was Terry Walsh and Derek Smith with 16 each points and Brandon Mimes had 12 points. Keys to the win were shooting 53.6 percent from the floor on 30-of-56 attempts, outrebounding the Pioneers, 45-35, and forcing Marietta into committing 22 turnovers.

Steve Bankson Becomes Fourth Coach in OAC History to Win 400 Games -- When B-W beat Muskingum on Saturday, January 6 in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution. He already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 405 victories and has a 405-312 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 686 career wins in 43 years overall and a 686-425 mark. Bankson also serves as the school's athletic director.

Two of the Best Coaches in Division III -- B-W's Steve Bankson (405) and JCU's Mike Moran (267) have a combined 672 wins at the collegiate level and more than 1,000 if you count their high school and junior college victory totals. Now, that's outstanding.

Tori Davis Has 2,133 Career Points and is First at B-W and Ninth in OAC History -- Tori Davis is B-W's all-time leading scorer with 2,133 career points and stands ninth all-time in OAC history. He needs 17 more points to surpass Kenyon's Scott Rogers (1976-80) for eighth place and 24 more to pass Kenyon's John Dunlop (1965-69) for seventh place.

In addition, Davis is fifth all-time in rebounding with 905 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 232 career blocked shots.

Schuler Likes Playing Against JCU -- Brendan Schuler has had some sucess in games against John Carroll. He had a career-high 25 points in the Jan. 3 meeting in University Heights. Overall in six games, Schuler has scored 51 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, passed for 13 assists and made six steals. He has connected on 16-of-30 field goals for 53.3 percent, including nine-of-14 three-pointers and 10-of-14 foul shots.
