B-W Men Beat Heidelberg, 93-80, in Berea as Tori Davis Becomes B-W's All-Time Leading Scorer

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) scored a game-high 25 points and became the school's all-time leading scorer as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 93-80, tonight (Wednesday, January 31, 2007)  in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the OAC and knocked the Student Princes out of first place.  Heidelberg fell to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the OAC and into a second place tie with B-W.

In addition, Davis had a game-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. He was aided by junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) had 20 points and senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/Ross) came off the bench to add 12 and sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) had 15 points.  Junior forward Andrew Lemmon and junior guard Shawn Shriver led Heidelberg with 23 points each and senior center Ron Higgins had 12.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead at the 19:01 mark when Schuler made a jump shot. Heidelberg came back to score the next five points and take a 5-4 lead before B-W outscored the Student Princes 13-3 to take a 17-8 lead at the 11:37 mark when Davis scored on a layup. The Jackets' extended their lead to 14 points at the 3:22 mark when freshman guard Louis Tumblin scored on a jumper. B-W also led at halftime, 39-28.

In the second half, B-W  regained its 14-point advantage at the 14:06 mark when Santiago canned a three-pointer. B-W built its largest lead of 16 points on three separate occassions with the last being at the 9:04 mark when freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/Senior) made a pair of foul shots.  The closest Heidelberg got to B-W was eight points at 76-68 at the 4:29 mark when Lemmon made another triple.

With his 25 points, Davis now has 2,066 career points. In addition, Davis now also has 877 career rebounds to rank fifth all-time and has a school career-record 227 blocked shots.

The Yellow Jacket next play on Saturday, February 3 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio to play OAC foe Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in The Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. This is the final of two regular season meetings between B-W and Heidelberg.

At halftime, B-W will honor its three 2006 fall sport ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-Americans.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track and regain a share of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference when it hosts OAC rival and first place Heidelberg College in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-6 overall and 7-5 OAC record following their 83-74 loss against Ohio Northern University last Saturday (Jan. 27) in Berea. The loss cost B-W a share of first place and left it one game back of league-leaders ONU, John Carroll University, Capital University and Heidelberg. B-W is tied with Otterbein College and Wilmington College for fifth place.

The Student Princes enter this game at 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the OAC following their 75-62 win against Mount Union College last Saturday (Jan. 27) in Tiffin and ended a two-game losing streak. Overall, Heidelberg has won five of its last seven games, including a 75-72 win versus B-W in Tiffin two weeks ago (see more below).

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg-- This is the 98th all-time meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in men’s basketball. B-W leads the series between the two schools, 59-38, despite a 75-72 loss in Tiffin in the first meeting this season on January 17. The last Yellow Jacket win was on February 1, 2006 when B-W beat the Student Princes, 108-93, in Tiffin.

The Last Meeting on January 17, 2007 in Tiffin: Baldwin-Wallace -- 72, Heidelberg -- 75-- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Heidelberg, on January 17, 2007 in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, the Student Princes defeated the Yellow Jackets, 75-72. Leading the way for Heidelberg was junior guard Shawn Shriver scored 23 points. In addition to Shriver, sophomore guard Chad Szaley and junior center Brian Schmidt each had 13 points for the Student Princes. Senior All-American and 6'3" forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) led B-W with a game-high 24 points. In addition, 6'4" senior post Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) had 14 points and 6'0" junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 11 markers.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.1 points per game and give up 73.0 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.1 ppg. B-W is grabbing 36.1 rebounds per contest, 4.2 more per game than their opponents. B-W shoots 48.5 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point range and 74.9 percent from the foul line.

Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to give at least 10 players game time. He will start 6'3" All-American senior forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian) and 6'6" sophomore Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6'0" junior wing Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa), 5'11" junior point guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) and 5'11" sophomore wing Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to start. Davis tops the team in scoring at 21.8 points per game, in rebounding with 8.5 rpg., field goals shooting at 65.3 percent on 139-of-213 attempts and with 39 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.0 ppg, grabs 3.7 rpg. and tops the team with 110 assists, shoots a team-leading 92.0 percent (46-of-50) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 40 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 6.8 ppg., is second with 5.4 rpg. Santiago is third in scoring with 11.5 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is second on the team with 35 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.3 ppg.,has 15 triples and is third with 15 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin with 5.4 ppg. and has 17 three-pointers. Clark scores 7.8 ppg. and grabs 2.6 rpg. Jesko scores 4.0 ppg. and has 17triples.

Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Information-- The Student Princes score 75.9 points per game and give up 69.4 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 6.5 ppg. Heidelberg is grabbing 36.4 rebounds per contest,2.9 more per game than its opponents. Heidelberg shoots 47.7 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from three-point range and 67.2 percent from the foul line.

Head Coach Duane Sheldon generally starts 6'0" junior guard Shawn Shriver and 6'2" junior guard Matt Eberle in the backcourt and 6'5" junior guard Greg Tyson, Jr. and 6'5" junior forward Andrew Lemmon on the wings and 6'6" junior center Ryan Schmidt in the post. Schmidt did not play on Saturday against Mt. Union and his status for ths game is unclear. Tyson scores 7.7 ppg., grabs 4.9 rpg. and shoots 56.7 percent from the floor on 55-of-97 attempts. Shriver scores 12.2 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., has a team-leading 36 three-pointers, is second with 37 assists and second with 21 steals. Eberle scores 3.2 ppg. and tops the team with 50 assists and 22 steals. Lemmon scores 11.1 ppg., grabs 7.0 rpg. and has 34 triples. Schmidt scores 12.5 ppg., grabs 6.8 rpg. and shoots 67.2 percent from the floor on 92-of-137 attempts. If Schmidt does not play, look for 6'9" senior center Ron Higgins to start. He scores scores 10.4 ppg. and grabs 6.2 rpg.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" sophomore guard Chad Szalay, 6'1" freshman guard Josh Calver, and 5'11" sophomore guard Jake Hessey to all see action. Szalay leads the team with 12.8 ppg. and is third on the team in three pointers with 32. Calver scores 3.4 ppg. and shoots 82.4 percent from the free throw line. Hessey scores 2.7 ppg. and has made 12 three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game Versus Ohio Northern University on Jan. 27 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 83, Ohio Northern -- 74-- In B-W's last game,the Yellow Jackets were defeated by Ohio Northern University, 83-74, in the Ursprung Gym in Berea on January 27. Despite the loss, B-W was led by Tori Davis with a game-high 34 points and five rebounds. Brendan Schuler added 12 points and eight assists. Keys to the Polar Bear win were out-three-pointing the Jackets' by 12 points (27-15), committing five less turnovers (12-7) and outscoring B-W from the foul line by seven points (26-19).

In Heidelberg's Last Game Versus Mount Union on Jan. 27 in Tiffin, Ohio: Heidelberg -- 75, Mount Union-- 62-- In Heidelberg's last game the Student Princes defeated Mount Union, 75-62, in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin.  The win broke a two-game losing streak. Heidelberg was led by Ron Higgins with 24 points and 14 rebounds as he filled in the starting lineup for center Brian Schmidt. Chad Szalay followed with 12 points and Andrew Lemmon added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Heidelberg outscored Mt. Union at the foul line by 12 points (22-10).

B-W to Honor its Three ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-Americans at Halftime -- At halftime of this game, the College will honor its three fall sport ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-Americans. They are football All-American and junior punter Kevin Soflkiancs (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark), senior men's soccer defender Tommy Ehrnfelt (Strongsville) and junior men's soccer forward Matt Pietro (Canfield). B-W President Richard W. Durst will make the presentations.

Steve Bankson is One of Four to Win 400 -- When B-W beat Muskingum on Saturday, January 6 in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution. He already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 402 victories and has a 402-311 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 683 career wins in 43 years overall and a 683-425 mark overall.

Tori Davis Has 2,041 Career Points and is Second All-Time at B-W -- Tori Davis scored a season-high 34 points last Saturday against Ohio Northern and is currently in second place on the B-W all-time scoring list with 2,041 career points. Davis needs 22 points to pass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school record of 2,062 points and become B-W's all-time leading scorer. He is just the 11th player in OAC history to score more than 2,000 career points. In addition, Davis is fifth alltime in rebounding with 866 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 222 career blocked shots.
