Baldwin-Wallace Falls to Heidelberg, 75-72, in Men's Basketball in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO — Junior guard Shawn Shriver scored 23 points tonight (Tuesday, January 17, 2007) as the Heidelberg College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College, 75-72, in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin.

With its win, Heidelberg is now 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W is now 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the OAC.

In addition to Shriver, sophomore guard Chad Szaley and junior center Brian Schmidt each had 13 points for the Student Princes.  Senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) led B-W with a game-high 24 points.  In addition, senior post Chad Clark (Freemont/Ross) had 14 and junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) had 11.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 22-12 lead when Clark hit a jumper at the 9:11 mark.  The Student Princes then went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 24-24 when Shriver hit a three-pointer with 4:24 left in the first half.  B-W closed out the first half on a 7-4 run to lead 31-28 a halftime.

In the second half, Heidelberg opened with an 8-0 run to take a 36-31 lead at the 18:37 mark when junior guard Matt Eberle connected on a three-pointer.  Szalay gave the Student Princes' their biggest lead of the night at 10 points when he hit a three-pointer with 14:00 left in the game.  The Jackets battled their way back and tied the score at 60-60 with 5:24 left when freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/Senior) hit a three pointer.  Sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) gave B-W its last lead of the night at 70-69 when drove and made a lay-up with 1:01 left in the game.  Then Szalay drove the court and hit a 12-foot jumper with 0:01 left in the game to give Heidelberg a 74-72 lead.  Then Shriver made one of two foul shots for the final score of 75-72.

With his 24 points tonight, Davis now has 1,970 career points and is second place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list and needs 93 more points to surpass the all-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73) who had 2,062 career points. In addition, Davis now also has 849 career rebounds to rank seventh all-time and has a school career-record 215 blocked shots.

The Yellow Jacket next play on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Capital University at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Tiffin, Ohio on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. This is the first game of two regular season meetings between the two schools.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team look to regain a share of the top spot in the OAC when it travels to conference-leading Heidelberg College.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-5 overall and 5-3 OAC record following their 95-88 overtime loss to OAC foe Wilmington College on Saturday (Jan. 13) in Berea. The loss dropped B-W into a five-way tie for second place in the OAC with Capital University, John Carroll University, Ohio Northern University and Otterbein College.

The Student Princes enter this game with a 10-5 overall and a conference-best 6-2 record in the OAC following their 74-70 win against Marietta College in Marietta on Saturday. After starting the season 3-4, the Student Princes have won seven of their last eight, including three straight heading into Wednesday's game.

The All-Time Series Between B-W and Heidelberg -- Baldwin-Wallace and Heidelberg have previously met 96 times in men's basketball with B-W leading the all-time series, 59-37, including winning the last two meetings. The last Heidelberg victory came on Feb. 2, 2005 when the Student Princes beat the Yellow Jackets, 96-86, in Berea.

Leading the way in the B-W win was current 6'3" senior forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) with 31 points and current 6'0" junior wing Tyler Sekerak (Corry,Pa./Corry) with 19 points. Current 6'0" sophomore guard Chad Szalay led the Student Princes with 27 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- The Yellow Jackets score 78.2 points per game and give up 72.3 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 5.9 ppg. Davis tops the team in scoring at 21.2 points per game, in rebounding with 9.4 rpg., field goals shooting at 67.3 percent on 107-of-159 attempts and with 32 blocked shots. Schuler is second scoring at 12.7 ppg, grabs 3.3 rpg. and tops the team with 85 assists, shoots a team-leading 89.5 percent (34-of-38) from the charity stripe and is first on the team with 34 three-pointers. Bene is scoring 6.3 ppg., is second with 5.5 rpg., shoots 48.1 percent (37-of-77) from the floor and 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the foul line. Santiago is third in scoring with 11.9 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is second on the team with 28 three-pointers. Sekerak scores 6.5 ppg.,has 13 triples and is third with 15 steals.

Off the bench, look for 6'4" senior forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), 6'1" freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior), 6'3" freshman guard Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior), 5'10" sophomore point guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and 6'6" sophomore post Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa./ Oil City Area) all to see action. Also, 6'2" freshman wing Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) has played in nine games. Tumblin with 5.8 ppg. and has 16 three-pointers. Clark scores 7.5 ppg. and grabs 2.7 rpg. Jesko scores 4.1 ppg. and has 13 triples.

Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Information-- The Student Princes score 76.1 points per game and give up 67.5 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 8.5 ppg. Heidelberg is grabbing 36.7 rebounds per contest,4.5 more per game than its opponents. Heidelberg shoots 48.6 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the foul line.

Look for Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 6'0" junior guard Shawn Shriver and 6'2" junior guard Matt Eberle in the backcourt and 6'5" junior guard Greg Tyson, Jr. and 6'5" junior forward Andrew Lemmon on the wings and 6'6" junior center Ryan Schmidt in the post. Tyson Jr. scores 8.2 ppg. and grabs 5.6 rpg. Shriver scores 11.5 ppg. and grabs 2.7 rpg. Eberle scores 3.4 ppg. and averages 2.6 assists a game. Lemmon scores 10.4 ppg. and grabs 6.6 rpg. Schmidt scores 12.8 ppg. and grabs 7.1 rpg.

Off the bench, look for 6'0" sophomore guard Chad Szalay, 6'9" senior center Ron Higgins, 6'1" freshman guard Josh Calver, and 5'11" sophomore guard Jake Hessey to all see action. Szalay leads the team with 13.1 ppg. and is first on the team in three pointers with 27. Higgins scores 9.2 ppg. and grabs 5.4 rpg. Calver scores 3.5 ppg. and shoots 93 percent from the free throw line. Hessey scores 2.7 ppg. and has made nine three pointers thus far.

In Heidelberg's Last Game Versus Marietta on Jan. 13 in Marietta, Ohio: Marietta -- 70, Heidelberg-- 74-- In Heidelberg's last game, a 74-70 win against Marietta on January 10 in Marietta, the Student Princes were led in scoring by guard Chad Szalay with 17 points with 12 of those points coming from behind the three-point arc.

Steve Bankson Becomes Fourth Coach in OAC History to Win 400 Games -- When B-W beat Muskingum on Saturday, January 6 in New Concord, veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson became just the fourth coach in OAC history to achieve 400 wins at an OAC institution. He already is the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 400 victories and has a 400-308 record in 27 seasons. Bankson also has 681 career wins in 43 years overall and a 681-422 mark overall. The College will make a special presentation to Bankson on his latest milestone prior to the Yellow Jackets next home game against Capital University on Saturday, January 20. Banckson also serves as the school's athletic director.

Tori Davis Has 1,946 Career Points and is Second All-Time at B-W -- Tori Davis with 29 points last Saturday against Wilmington passed his older brother, former All-American Thad Davis (2001-2005), to move into second place on the B-W all-time scoring list with 1,946 career points. Davis needs 117 points to pass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school record of 2,062 points and become B-W's all-time leading scorer.

In addition, Davis is seventh all-time in rebounding with 846 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 215 career blocked shots.
