B-W Men's Basketball Team Loses to Edgewood (Wisc.), 72-64, in Semifinals of the Cactus Jam Classic

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore forward Chris DeMarco scored a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds tonight (Thursday, December 28, 2006) as Edgewood (Wisc.) College defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 72-64, in a semifinal game at the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. The loss ended a four-game Yellow Jacket winning streak.

With its win, Edgewood is now 5-4 overall and plays Simpson (Iowa) in Saturday's championship game.  B-W is now 7-3 overall and will play Ramapo (N.J.) in the consolation game at 4:00 p.m. E.S.T.

In addition to DeMarco for Edgewood, senior guard Scott Kyle and junior forward Evan Klees each had 15 points and junior center Charlie Averkamp had 11 points. B-W was led by senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) with 19 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) had 11 points.

Keys to the Yellow Jacket loss were making just 21-of-67 shots from the floor for 31.3 percent, including five-of-22 three-pointers for 22.7 percent. The Yellow Jackets also were outrebounded, 46-37.

With his 19 points today, Davis now has 1,844 career points and surpassed Bob Walters (1959-63) to move into fifth place all-time. Davis now also has 799 career rebounds to rank ninth all-time and has a school career-record 205 blocked shots.

Following Saturday's consolation game, B-W returns to Berea and resumes rugged Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 when it travels to University Heights, Ohio to play Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Basketball Team Faces Edgewood (Wisc.) in Semifinals the Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Phoenix, Arizona 

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team will seek its fifth straight victory tonight (6:00 p.m. E.S.T. game time on Thursday, December 28, 2006) when it faces Edgewood (Wisc.) College in the semifinals of the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately this game will not be broadcast via radio. We will have results posted on this Web site (www.bw.edu/athletics) as soon as they are made available to us via telephone from Phoenix.

Last night, the Yellow Jackets defeated Linfield (Ore.) College, 69-61, in its first of the three games that will be played in Phoenix. With its win, B-W is 7-2 overall and has won four straight games. Edgewood, a 72-57 victor last night against Colorado College, has a 4-4 record, including two straight wins.

In beating Linfield last night, senior Division III All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) led the way with a game-high 21 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. He canned eight-of-13 shots from the floor and five-of-nine foul shots. His career-high 18 rebounds eclipses his previous best of 17 that he had a year ago in a 113-108 double overtime upset of then No.1-ranked The College of Wooster. Davis also had three blocked shots to increase his B-W career-record to 204 overall.

In addition to Davis for B-W, freshman guard Louis Tumblin scored 11 points and sophomore guard Dennis Santiago had 10 points and seven rebounds. Linfield (4-5 overall) was led by senior forward Evan Timperly with 16 points and junor guard Steve Taylor had 10.

Keys to the Yellow Jacket victory were holding Linfield to just 30.8 percent field goal shooting (20-of-65) and outrebounding Linfield, 52-34. The Yellow Jackets led at halftime, 34-27 and outscored Linfield in the second stanza, 35-34.

With his 21 points last night, Davis now has 1,825 career points and is sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring chart. He needs 16 more points to surpass Bob Walters (1959-63) to move into the Top-Five all-time. Davis now also has 788 career rebounds and a school career-record 204 blocked shots, including three today versus Linfield.

If B-W beas Edgewood, it would play in the championship game against the winner of the Simpson (Iowa) versus Ramapo (N.J.) game on Saturday, December 30 at 6:00 p.m. E.S.T. The losers play at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game.

After nine games, Davis tops the team and Ohio Athletic Conference in scoring at 22.1 points-per-game and tops B-W in rebounding at 9.2 rpg., blocked shots with 21 and field goal shooting at 63.1 percent on 65-of-103 attempts. Santiago is second in scoring at 11.9 ppg. and tops the team with 15 three-pointers. Junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) tops B-W with 50 assists and 13 steals. The Yellow Jackets scored 80.1 ppg. and allow 71.2 ppg. B-W also outrebounds its opponents by 6.1 rpg.

Following its games in Phoenix, B-W returns to Berea and returns to OAC play on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 when it travels to University Heights to play cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.
