Against Curry (Mass.) and Play in Title Game Tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) scored a career-high 19 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team opened its 2006-2007 season tonight (Friday, November 17) with a 110-70 victory against Curry (Mass.) College in the first round of the Alvernia College Sheraton-Reading Tipoff Tournament in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets will play the winner of host Alvernia and Rutgers-Camden (N.J.) in tomorrow's championship game at 3:00 p.m.
In addition to Santiago, senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in 25 minutes of action and the trio of junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park), sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and freshman Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) each scored 12 points. Junior point guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) ran the offense and scored nine points and passed for a game-high 10 assists.
After jumping out to a 48-35 halftime advantage, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 43 points at 110-67 with 1:32 left in the game when sophomore forward Brad Howell (Cleveland/ Benedictine) made a jumper.
The Coronels, 0-1, were led by junior forward Loice Williams with 20 points, senior forward Toby Brittian with 16 and senior guard Stephen Prescod had 14.
Following its title game appearance tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 18), the B-W men will next play on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when it hosts traditional and nonleague rival Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m. in the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader on Obie Bender Night in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. The B-W women host Cleveland cross-town rival Case in the first game at 6:00 p.m.

The top-seeded BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Reading, Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday, November 17-18, 2006 to participate in the 2006-2007 season-opening Alvernia College Tournament. The Yellow Jackets will play Curry (Mass.) College in its first game on Nov. 17 at 6:00 p.m. Alvernia plays host to the University of Rutgers - Camden in the nightcap. The winners of each game will play in the championship game at 3:00 p.m. on Nov. 18. The championship is preceeded by the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will play its season-opening night of basketball. The Yellow Jackets are coming off of an appearance in last year's NCAA Division III National Tournament, return concensus All-American post player Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and are picked to win the prestigious Ohio Athletic Conference title again this season. Curry College of Massachusetts provides strong oppositionfor B-W on its opening night.
The All-Time B-W and Curry Series Series -- This is the first-ever meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Curry College in the sport of men's basketball.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Last season the Yellow Jackets averaged 86.7 points per game and gave up 76 ppg. for a scoring differential of plus 16.7 ppg. The Yellow Jackets grabbed 38.6 rebounds per contest,6.7 more per game than their opponents. B-W shot a school-record and Division III-leading 53.5 percent from the field, including 40.6 percent from three-point range, and 73.8 percent from the foul line.
Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to play as many as 10 or 11 players in this game. He will start Tori Davis and 6'4" senior Chad Clark (Freemont/Freemont Ross) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6’0' junior Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area), 5’11" junior All-OAC guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) and 5'11" sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) to start. Davis topped the team and OAC in scoring in 2005-2006 with 23.4 ppg. and topped B-W in rebounding with 8.5 rpg. He shot 64.4 percent from the field and 73.6 percent from the line and tops the team with 63 blocked shots. Schuler scored 11.5 ppg., grabbed 3.2 rpg., shot 50.7 percent from the floor and 81.4 percent from the line and led the team with 145 assists and 68 thre-pointers. Sekerak scored 8.0 ppg.,grabbed 3.3 rpg., was third on the team with 67 assists and third with 33 steals. Clark scored 6.7 ppg. and grabbed 3.1 rpg. and has the talent to shoot from the perimeter. Santiago saw action in 26 games as a freshman and scored 4.3 ppg. and canned 17 triples.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'6'' sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland), 6'6'' sophomore forward Steven Mong (Oil City, Pa/Oil City Area), 5'10'' sophomore guard Doug Moderick (North Royalton/Parma Heights Holy Name), 6'1'' sophomore guard Stephen Hunter (Norwalk/Senior) and freshmen guards Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) and Tom Jesko (Salem/ Senior).
Two Pieces of the Puzzle Will Be Missing -- Two important players on last season's OAC regular season and OAC Tournament championship team, current senior guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) and senior guard Luke Lyle (Fremont/ Ross) both will not play this season due to injuries. Both will play next season. Meyer is serving as a student assistant coach this season. A year ago, Meyer came off the bench in all 30 games, scored 4.2 ppg., grabbed 1.9 rpg. and shot 56.5 percent from the floor. Lyle was the back up point guard and averaged 1.7 ppg. with 24 assists and made 17-of-18 foul shots.
Curry College Probable Starters and Information-- Last year the Colonels of Curry College scored 64.1 points per game and gave up 63.0 ppg. for a plus 1.1scoring differential per game. Curry shot 42.0 percent from the floor, 31.8 percent from three-point range and 66.6 percent from the foul line.
Look for fourth-year Head Coach Malcolm Wynn to pick his starters from among three returnees and a host of newcomers. The three returning players are 6'1'' senior guard Stephen Prescod, 6'4'' senior forward Marvin Lamarre and 6'3" senior forward Christopher Landford. Prescod and Lamarre each saw time as starters and Landford played in 12 games, all coming off the bench. Prescod played in 25 games, started 14, scored 7.8 ppg., grabbed 4.2 rpg. and had 41 steals. Lamarre played in 25 games, including 10 starts, and scored 2.6 ppg., grabbed a team-leading 6.7 rpg. and had 23 blocked shots. Landford scored 0.7 ppg.

B-W is Picked to Win 2006-2007 OAC Title Again -- The B-W men are picked to win the OAC title again this year by the OAC Coaches. B-W received five first place votes and 75 points.
Defending OAC Regular Season and Tourney Champ -- B-W is the defending OAC regular season and OAC Tournament champion. Last year's regular season and OAC Tournament titles in the same season marked a first in school history. The regular season title was its first since the 1978-79 season and the fourth in school history. The Yellow Jackets have won five OAC Tournament titles (1966-67, 1995-96, 1997-98, 2004-05 and last season).
The School-Record for Victories in a Season -- B-W won 25 games last season to set the school single season record. The previous record of 23 win, was set during the 1966-67 season when the Yellow Jackets finished 23-9 overall.
Tori Davis' Records -- Tori Davis enters the season ranked eighth all-time in scoring with 1,626 career points and needs 437 more this season to become B-W's all-time leading scorer. He would surpass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school-record of 2,062 career points. Davis already owns single-season records for points (703), field goal percentage (.644 on 250-of-388 attempts), scoring average (23.4 ppg.), free throws attempted (240) and made (176) and blocked shots (64 in 2004-2005). His 183 blocked shots are seven shy of tying his older brother, Thad Davis' (2001-2005) record of 190.
Steve Bankson is B-W's Winningest Men's Basketball Coach -- Yellow Jackets veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest men's basketball coach in B-W's school history with 390 wins in 27 years. He has 671 victories in his 43-year career. Bankson is 390-304 at B-W, was 232-90 at Lorain County Community College and 49-24 in three seasons at the high school level. Bankson also serves as the Men's Director of Athletics.
