BEREA, OHIO — Junior guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview) made a game-winning three-point shot with 3.91 seconds left today (Saturday, January 20, 2007) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 81-78, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its win, the Yellow Jackets is now 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the OAC and broke a three-game losing streak this season and a two-game losing skein to the Crusaders. With its loss, Capital is now 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the OAC.
In addition to Schuler, senior All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) had a game-high 21 points, sophomore guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/Midpark) had 11 and Schuler added 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Capital was led by sophomore guard Ryan Wood with 18 points and both sophomore guard Nate Stahl and sophomore forward Casey Brown each had 14 points.
In the first half, there were four lead changes and two ties, before the Yellow Jackets gained control. The Yellow Jackets had three leads of seven points with the last one being at 30-23 with 5:31 left when Davis made a pair of foul shots. B-W then increased its lead to eight markers on three separate occassions with the last one being at 38-30 with 1:17 left when freshman guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) made one of two foul shots. B-W built its largest lead of the half at 10 points at 40-30 with 33 seconds left before the intermission when Davis made a pair of foul shots. A pair of foul shots by Wood with six seconds remaining left B-W with a 40-32 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, B-W regained its 10-point lead at 42-32 with 19:30 left when Santiago made a jump shot. Capital then went on a 14-8 run to close within four points at 50-46 with 15:10 left when Wood made his third three-pointer in the half and fourth in the game. After B-W rebuilt its lead to 10 points at 57-47 with 11:51 left, Capital went on a 6-0 run to again close within four points at 57-53 with 10:46 left when Stahl made a triple. The Crusaders finally tied the score at 62-all with 8:00 left when Stahl made another three-pointer. B-W then went on a 6-0 run to lead 68-62 with 6:33 left when sophomore forward Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Media Highland) scored on a rebound of a missed shot. The Jackets' would builf their lead to seven points at 76-69 with 4:05 left when junior guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry) scored off a rebound of a missed shot. Capital then went on a 9-2 run to tie the game for the final time at 78-all when Gunn scored and was fouled at the 19-second mark but missed the foul shot. That set up Schuler's game-winner. A three-point attempt by Capital guard Jake Fanning at the buzzer was off its mark.
With his 21 points today, Davis now has 1,991 career points and is second place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list and needs 72 more points to surpass the all-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73) who had 2,062 career points. In addition, Davis now also has 855 career rebounds to rank sixth all-time and has a school career-record 216 blocked shots.
The Yellow Jacket next play on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when they travel to Allaince to play OAC arch-rival Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m.
Prior to the game, Baldwin-Wallace honored 27-year veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson on the occassion of his 400th win at the College. That win occurred on January 6, 2007 when B-W beat Muskingum College, 74-61, in New Concord.

Tori Davis Has 1,970 Career Points and is Second All-Time at B-W -- Tori Davis scored 24 points on Wednesday against Heidelberg and is in second place on the B-W all-time scoring list with 1,970 career points. Davis needs 93 points to pass Dean Martin's (1969-73) school record of 2,062 points and become B-W's all-time leading scorer.
In addition, Davis is seventh all-time in rebounding with 849 in his career, and is the school record-holder with 215 career blocked shots.
