Baldwin-Wallace College defeats Oberlin College, 96-80, in Oberlin to Improve to

3-0; Play at the Allegheny Tournament This Weekend

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated traditional rival Oberlin College, 96-80, tonight (Nov. 22) at the Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio. The win was B-W's 11th straight against the Yeomen.

With its win, B-W is now 3-0 overall and Oberlin is 0-3. The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, Nov. 26 against Allegheny College in the first round of the Allegheny Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania at 8:00 p.m.

In the first half, B-W had an early 10-5 lead at the 17:59 mark and later extended the lead to 19-9 with 15:10 left in the half after junior preseason All-American forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) scored nine straight points and finished the half with 18 points to lead all scorers. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 18 points at 51-33 with 20 seconds left before halftime when senior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) hit his fourth three-pointer. Aufmuth connected on 4-of-6 from behind the arc in the half for 16 points. B-W led at the intermission, 51-36.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 31 points at 94-63 with 4:47 left in the game when senior post player Charod Hale (Akron/ Kenmore) connected on a layup. The Yeomen finished the game on a 17-2 run, but it would not be enough as B-W went on to win by the final score of 96-80. B-W controlled the glass throughout the game, out rebounding Oberlin 41-26. Davis led the Yellow Jackets with 25 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. He was joined in double figures by Aufmuth with 21 points and senior post Dan Gundert (Wellington) who chipped in with 18 points.

Oberlin was led by junior guard Quentin Spencer with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Godwin added 19 points, freshman Mike Loll chipped in with 16 points and fellow freshman Omari Hall added 12 points for the Yoemen. As a team, Oberlin shot 58% (14-of-24) from behind the three-point arc.

The winner of this Saturday's B-W versus Allegheny game will play the winner of the eighth-ranked Albion (Mich.) College and Juniata (Pa.) College game on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 3:00 p.m. Following its trip to Meadville, B-W is idle until it opens 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference play at rival Otterbein College in Westerville on Saturday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team travels to Oberlin, Ohio to play traditional rival Oberlin College in a nonleague game on Tuesday, November 22 in the Phillips Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to extend its winning ways to three straight games when it plays traditional rival Oberlin College in a nonleague game at Oberlin.
        The Yellow Jackets opened the 2005-2006 campaign last weekend (Nov. 18-19) when they won the Westminster (Pa.) College Buzz Ridl Classoc Tournament. B-W beat seventh-ranked (d3hoops.com Internet Web site poll) St. John Fisher College of New York, 88-79, in the first round and then beat host Westminster, 133-113, in the championship game.  It marked the sixth season-opening tourney crown for B-W in the past 10 years.
        The Yeomen of Oberlin College enter this game at 0-2 overall following a 66-54 loss to St. Joseph's (Maine) College on Saturday in the consolation game of the Vassar (N.Y.) College Tournament.  Oberlin lost to Elms (Mass.) College, 80-60, in its first game at Vassar.

The B-W Versus Oberlin Series -- The Yellow Jackets and Yeomen have previously met 64 times and this series is one of the longest standing rivalries for B-W.  The Jackets' lead the series, 49-15, including a 97-62 win a year ago (Dec. 1) in Berea and the past 10 meetings overall.

The Last Meeting:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 97, Oberlin -- 62 in Berea, Ohio on December 1, 2005 -- The last time that the Yellow Jackets and Yeomen met, on December 1, in Berea, B-W won, 97-62.  Current senior All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  In addition, Tori's All-American brother, Thad Davis, scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, current junior guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) scored  eight points with two three-pointers and current junior forward Chad Clark (Fremont Ross) had nine points. Oberlin was led by current junior forward Quinton Spencer with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Current sophomore guard Matt Godwin also added 17 points for the Yeomen.  B-W outrebounded Oberlin, 53-28 for the game and shot 60.0 percent from the floor (39-of-65).

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters and Information -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” Tori Davis and 6'2" senior Dan Gundert (Wellington) at the post positions. In the backcourt, look for 6’0” sophomore guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./Corry), 5’10” sophomore Brenden Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) and 6’0” senior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) to start. Tori Davis tops the team in scoring with 24.0 points per game and rebounding with 9.5 rpg. He is canning 56.0 percent of his field goals (14-of-25) and tops the team with three blocked shots and is second with seven assists. Gundert is second in scoring at 17.0 ppg., second in rebounding with 8.5 rpg. and has canned 11-of-13 shots from the floor for 84.6 percent. Aufmuth leads the team in assists with nine and averages 10.0 ppg. Brenden Schuler is scoring 13.0 ppg. and is second with eight assists and leads the team with six three-pointers (six-of-11).  Sekerak is scoring 5.0 ppg. and is second with eight assists.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" junior post Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross), junior swingman Nick Meyer (Mentor), 5’11” freshman guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark), 6’2” junior guard  Luke Kyle (Fremont/Ross), 6’5” senior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore) and 6'2" junior guard Luke Lyle (Fremont/ Ross).  Clark is second on the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg., grabs 7.0 rpg. and canned 12-of-18 field goals at Westminster. Santiago is averaging 9.0 ppg and is four-of-five from behind the three-point arc.

Oberlin Probable Starters and Information -- The Yeomen only list 10 players on their entire roster.  Look for Head Coach Frank “Happy” Dobbs to start 5'9" Matt Godwin, 5'11" sophomore Jordan Beard in the backcourt, 6'3" Noah Goldman and 6'1" Quinton Spencer as his swingmen and 6'7" freshman Brad Spelich at center. He also will play 6'0" freshman guard Omari Hall, 6'5" freshman forward Mike Loll, 6'5" freshman forward D.J. Maynard and 6'0" freshman guard Colin Sallee.  After two games, Spencer tops the team in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and in rebounding at 7.5 rpg. He also has an amazing 12 steals in two games. Loll comes off the bench and is second in scoring at 10.0 ppg. and grabs 7.0 rpg. Godwin scores 9.0 ppg. and has a team-leading four treys. Spelich scores 6.5 ppg. and grabs 6.0 rpg.  Beard and Salleeand hall is at 4.0 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game:  B-W -- 133, Westminster College (Pa.)  -- 113 on Saturday, November 19 in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania -- B-W's last game was on November 19 when it defeated host Westmister (Pa.) College, 133-113, to win the Westminster Buzz Ridl Classic.  The Yellow Jackets also beat seventh-ranked St. John Fisher of New York, 88-79, in the first round.  The 133 points scored by the Yellow Jackets set a school single-game scoring mark.
        The Yellow Jackets had seven players score in double figures, led by Tori Davis with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  All-tournament team selection Dan Gundert had a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds and Chad Clark had a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds.  In addition, Keith Aufmuth had 18 points, Charrod Hale had a career-high a career-high 14 points, tourney Most Valuable Player Brenden Schuler had 12 points and Nick Meyer had 10 markers.

In B-W's Victory Against St. John Fisher (N.Y.):  B-W -- 88, St. John Fisher -- 79  -- On the first night of the Westminster Tournament, B-W led from start to finish as it defeated previously seventh-ranked St. John Fisher College of New York, 88-79. St. John Fisher was 28-1 overall a year ago. Tori Davis led B-W in that win wity a game-high 26 points and was joined in double figures by Dan Gundert with 15 points and eight rebounds, Brendan Schuler with 14 points and Chad Clark with 12 markers.  A key in the win was B-W making all 15 of its foul shots in the second half.

In Oberlin's Last Game:  St Joseph's College (Me.) --- 66, Oberlin College --- 54:  In their last game, the Yeomen lost to St. Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday November 19, in the consolation game of the Vasser College of New York Tournament. Despite the loss, Quinton Spencer led Oberlin with 10 points and six rebounds. He was the only OC player in double digits. The game was tied 27-27 at halftime but St. Joseph's outscored the Yeomen 39-27 in the second stanza. Noah Goldman also had nine markers for Oberlin.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

The Single-Game Scoring Record -- The 133 points scored against Westminster is s school single-game record and is two more than the previous record of 131 set a year ago in a win against Marietta College. In addition, the 74 rebounds that B-W had versus Westminster is believed to be a school-record.  We are researching it!

Brendan Schuler is the MVP and Dan Gundert Makes All-Tourney --  Brendan Schuler was named the Buzz Ridle Classic Most Valuable Player and Dan Gundert was tabbed to the all-tournament team.  Schuler earned his honor by scoring 26 points, including canning six-for-11 three-pointers, grabbing nine rebounds and passing for eight assists. Gundert scored 34 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, passed for six assists and canned 11-of-13 field goals for 84.6 percent.

Tori Davis Quickly Approaching 1,000 Career Points -- Tori Davis enters the Oberlin game with 971 career points and needs 29 more to join the 1,000-Point Club.

Bankson Inducted into his High School Hall of Fame -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson was recently inducted into the Port Huron (Mich.) High School Hall of Fame. Bankson is the winningest men's basketball coach in B-W school history with 367 wins in 26 years. He has 648 in his 41-year career.

Season-Opening Tourney Success -- B-W has won six of the last 10 season-opening tournaments that it has competed in and has a 15-5 record and a .750 winning percentage during that time.

The 2005-2006 Ohio Athletic Conference Polls --  The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish second in the Ohio Athletic Conference this year by a vote of the OAC Coaches.  B-W opens the OAC schedule on Saturday, December 3 at Otterbein College at 7:30 p.m.
