Strong at Mid-January Meet in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- The men's and women's track & field team opened the season with strong performances at the Mid-January Meet hosted by B-W on the Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Rec Center in Berea.
The men recorded one first place, one second place, one third place, and three fourth place finishes. Leading the way for the men's team was junior Steve Johnson (Canton/ Central Catholic) with a first place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 14'5.5". Also in the field events, senior Josh Svenson (Wadsworth) placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 43'9", senior Adam Eltrich (Lorain/ Amherst Steele) placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 46'7.25", and senior Chris Aurand (Hudson) placed fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 43'1.75". Freshman J.P. Kraft (Bolier/ Tuscarawas Central Catholic) placed fifth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.80, followed by sophomore James Harris-Chappell (Jefferson), who placed seventh with a time of 6.85. Chappell came back latter in the meet to place fourth in the 300-meter dash with a time of 37.95. Also placing in the 300-meter dash was senior Mike Morningstar (Canton/ Central Catholic) in sixth place with a time of 38.85 and sophomore Ed Trela (Brecksville/ Padua) in eighth with a time of 39.03. Sophomore Aaron Apathy (Parma/ Padua) placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.78 and freshman Nate Bowen (Fremont/ Ross) placed sixth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:47.73.
The women recorded five first place, nine second place, four third place, and eight fourth place finishes. Leading the way for the women's team was freshman Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg), who won the 300-meter dash in a time of 44.25 and the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.84. Sophomores Jeanne Osborne (Oak Harbor) and Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/ Firelands) placed first second in the 55-meter hurdles, respectively, with times of 8.97 and 8.99. Seniors Liz Redd (North Canton/ Glen Oak) and Mary Griglak (Berea/ Lutheran West) took second and third in the 55-meter dash, respectivly, recording times of 7.64 and 7.72. Redd came back to take second place in the 300-meter dash, behind Paul, with a time of 44.85 and was followed by junior Kim Johnson (Athens) in third place with a time of 46.13. Senior Ashlee Pence (Reynoldsburg/ Licking Heights) and freshman Andrea Phllips (Akron Manchester) joined Paul and Johnson to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:21.21. Placing second in the 800-meter run was freshman Cassandra Turic (Poland) in a time of 2:28.56, followed by junior Rihana Knotts (Middletown/ Madison) in third with a time of 2:29.37. Junior Megan Via (Brookeville) also placed second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:28.27. In the field events, Paulsen also placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5'2", junior Kara Weaver (Myrtle Creek, Ore./ South Umpqua) placed second in the long jump with a national provisional qualifying mark of 17'11.5", senior Megan McDannel (Berea) placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 42'9.5", and seniors Kim Lammers (Liberty Center) and Amy Mauceri (Solon) place first second in the shot put with marks of 40'4.25" and 37'3.75", respectively.
The Yellow Jacket indoor track teams will next be in action on Saturday, January 28 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio for the OAC Relays. B-W also will host its annual Mid-February Meet on Feb. 10 and the annual Greater Cleveland College Indoor Championship Meet on Feb. 17.
