BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's indoor track and field team placed first at the 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet at Marietta College. The Yellow Jacket men finished in seventh place. The Yellow Jacket women clinched their 16th OAC title in the last 18 years and Head Coach Dr. Bill Taraschke earned OAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors.
The Yellow Jacket women totalled 125 points. The B-W men finished with 50 total points.
For the women, junior Mary Griglak (Berea) won the 400-meter dash, with a time of 59.53 seconds and the 300-meter dash in 42.22. The 4x200 relay team, composed of Griglak, sophomore Kara Weaver (Myrtle Creek, Ore./ South Umpqua), junior Liz Redd (North Canton/ GlenOak), and freshman Jeanne Osborne (Oak Harbor), also took first place with a time of 1:45.30. Weaver placed in numerous events, including a second place finish in the 55-meter dash, with a time of 7.51 seconds. She also finished second in the 300-meter dash in 42.49 and sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 34' 09.75". Redd placed fifth in the 55-meter dash, in 7.60 and in the 300-meter dash in 43.26. Osborne also competed in the 55-meter hurdles and took second with a time of 8.62.
Senior Courtney Stelzer (Sunbury/ Big Walnut) finished ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.29. Freshman Rhiana Knotts (Middletown/ Madison) finished seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:26.58. Sophomore Megan Via (Brookville) competed in the 1000-meter run and finished in fifth place with a time of 3:10.38. She also finished eighth in the 1500-meter run in 5:01.74. Junior Rebecca Price (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) also finished eighth in the 1000-meter run in 3:15.83. Senior Lisa Bartkiewicz (Berea) finished fourth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:20.19 and seventh in the 1500-meter run in 4:57.06. Senior Jamie Luketic (Rootstown) finished eighth in the 5000-meter run in 18:48.69. The 4x400 relay team, composed of Griglak, Osborne, sophomore Stephanie Damas (Parma/ Padua) and Redd finished seventh in 4:17.45.
In the high jump, freshman Megan Cathcart (Parma/ Senior) took third place with a jump of 5' 01.75". Freshman Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/ Firelands) took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5' 00.50". Junior Kim Lammers (Liberty Center) took second place in the shot put with a toss of 39' 11.25".
For the men, freshman James Harris-Chappell (Jefferson) finished in eighth place in the 55-meter dash in 6.69 seconds. Senior Eric Schmuhl (Medina/ Senior) finished fifth in the 300-meter dash in 36.49 and third in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.92. Sophomore Nile Smith (Orrville/ Millersburg West Holmes) finished in third place in the 400-meter dash in 51.13. Sophomore Sean Johnson (Alliance/ St. Thomas Aquinas) finished eighth in the 500-meter dash in 1:08.9. In the 800-meter run, freshman Aaron Apathy (Parma/ Padua) took fourth place with a time of 2:00.07. Freshman D.J. Hanigosky (North Royalton/ St. Ignatius) finished seventh in the 1000-meter run in 2:40.55 and fifth in the 1500-meter run in 4:04.84.
Freshman Ian Michalik (Sandusky/ Perkins) finished third in the 5000-meter run in 15:30.15. The team composed of freshman Ed Trela (Brecksville/ Padua), Smith, senior Ian Gibson (Painesville/ Harvey) and Schmuhl finished fourth in the 4x200 relay in 1:32.23. In the 4x400 relay, Schmuhl, Gibson, Apathy and freshman Chris Hartzler (Burbank/ Norwayne) finished seventh in 3:32.65. Sophomore Steve Johnson (Canton/ Central Catholic) finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 14' 4". Sophomore Ben Price (Cleveland/ John Marshall) finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 41' 2.50". Senior Jon Shofstall (Lakeview/ Indian Lake) finished eighth in the shot put with a heave of 46' 9".
Following the meet, members of the Yellow Jacket men's and women's teams left Marietta and headed south to the Sunshine State of Florida on their annual Spring Break trip. On the trip, B-W will train and compete in Florida. On Friday, March 11, B-W will compete at the annual Disney Relay Meet in Orlando and then compete at the annual Florida State Open Meet on Saturday, March 12 in Tallahassee.
