Day at the OAC Championships
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's indoor track and field team leads after the first day of competition at the 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet at Marietta College. The Yellow Jacket men stand in eighth place. The Yellow Jacket women are seeking their 16th OAC title in the last 18 years.
The Yellow Jacket women have 24 points after three scored events to lead the 10-team field and the B-W men total three points.
For the women, junior Angela Gruss (Tiffin/ Calvert) placed second in the pole vault with a career-best vault of 10-feet and 11 and one-half inches (10'11.5"). In the long jump, sophomore Kara Weaver (Myrtle Creek, Ore./ South Umpqua) placed second with a jump of 18' 1.75" and bettered her NCAA Division III national qualifying distance by one-quarter of an inch. In addition, freshman Megan Cathcart (Parma/ Senior) placed sixth with a jump of 16' 8.5". In addition the distance medley relay team of senior Courtney Stelzer (Sunbury/ Big Walnut), senior Lisa Bartkiewicz (Berea), sophomore Megan Via (Brookville) and junior Rebecca Price (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) placed fourth with a time of 12:51.02.
Also, in the unscored women's weight throw, junior Megan McDannel (Berea) placed second with a throw of 48' 2", junior Kim Lammers (Liberty Center) was fourth with a throw of 40' 9" and junior Amy Mauceri (Solon) was fifth with a toss of 40' 6.75".
For the men, the distance medley relay team placed sixth to score the team's three points. The teams was comprised of freshman Jeff Smearcheck (North Canton/ Hoover), freshman Aaron Apathy (Parma/ Padua), freshman Ian Michalik (Sandusky/ Perkins) and freshman D.J. Hanigosky (North Royalton/ St. Ignatius) as they finished with a time of 10:46.30.
In the unscored men's weight throw, senior Jon Shoffstall (Lakeview/ Indian Lake) was second with a throw of 53' 11'.25" which bettered his NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance by 8.25 inches. Also, sophomore Adam Eltrich (Lorain/ Amherst Steele) was third with a throw of 48' 10.25", junior Dan LaRocco (Brook Park/ Midpark) was fifth with a toss of 44' 4" and sophomore Chris Aurand (Hudson) was ninth with a throw of 40' 9.5".
The second day of competition is on Saturday, March 5 with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running events beginning at 2:00 p.m.
