Women Win CWRU Invite; Men Finish Second

BEREA, OHIO -- The Lady Yellow Jacket's captured their first meet title of the season by scoring 128 points to win the CWRU Invite and the men had their best showing of the season, scoring 109 points to finish second to CWRU by four and one half points.

The women's only winner was senior Stacey Havaich (Austintown/Fitch) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.  However, the women had some other strong finishes.  In addition, to Havaich's first place in the 800, freshman Rihana Knotts (Middletown/Madison) finished second with a time of 2:25.  The women's 4x200-meter relay made up of sophomores Mary Griglak (Cleveland/Lutheran West) and Lizz Redd (North Canton/Glen Oak), junior Jayna Rasmussen (Cleveland/Lutheran West) and senior Nikki Bell (McDonald) finished second by crossing the finish in 1:51.  Finally, sophomore Amy Mauceri (Solon) was the runner-up in the women's weight throw with a career best throw of 41'3".

On the men's side, three seniors continued to impress with more success.  For the second consecutive week senior Alex Johnson (Olmsted Falls) won the men's shot put with a throw of 50'0.50" and senior Jon Shoffstall (Lakeville/Indian Lake) won the men's weight throw with a new career best of 50'2.50".  Also senior Brian Adkins (Berea) captured his second individual win of the season by winning the men's 1500-meter run in a time of 4:15.  In addition, the men's 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Adkins and freshmen Nile Smith (Killbuck/Millersburg West Holmes), Chris Smolinski (Parma/Padua), and Sean Johnson (Alliance/St. Thomas Aquinas) was second with a time of 3:36 and sophomore Mark Miracola (Olmsted Falls) was second in the high jump with a leap of 6'2".  Finally freshman Steve Johnson (Canton/Central Catholic) was the runner-up in the pole vault with a career best vault of 13'6".

The Yellow Jackets will next be action next Friday night February 13 when they host the annual Sparky Adams Meet, on the Harrison Dillard Track, which begans at 5:30 p.m..
