BEREA, OHIO—Baldwin-Wallace College junior women’s tennis standout Andrea Isaac (New Philadelphia) is the total package. She is active, engaging, involved and en route to being the most successful women’s tennis player in school history.
As the team’s number one singles player and a team-leader. She is a Dean’s List student who is involved in a number of honors groups, including holding a leadership position, and involved on campus in many other organizations, including her graduating class.
On the tennis court, Isaac is already a success. She is closing in on being the school’s all-time leader in victories in singles play, doubles play and the combination victory catagory. She set the school-record for wins as a freshman with 19 and a 19-1 record and was the first first-year player in Ohio Athletic Conference history to be named as the OAC Player of the Year. With two regular season matches and the 2006 OAC Tournament yet to play, Isaac already has 60 singles wins, 56 doubles victories and 116 combination wins.
As a sophomore, Isaac was even better as she had 22 singles wins and a 22-6 record to reset the school mark, earned All-OAC recognition for the second straight year and combined with then freshman Meggie Glassburn (Canton) to set another school-record with 22 wins and a 22-6 doubles slate. In addition, Isaac and Glassburn were a big reason why the team tied the school-record for wins in a season with 19 and had a 19-6 overall mark.
This season, Isaac is even better and is finally getting regional recognition as the first B-W player ever to be ranked by the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region ranking committee. She is 19-4 in singles play, including 16-1 in dual matches for the 12-5 overall Yellow Jackets who have won a season-high six straight matches. She and Glassburn also are 18-5 as the No.1 doubles tandem.
“Andrea is our first ranked player,” said 20-year veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy. “She is arguably the best women’s tennis player to ever play at the school. But that is just a part of Andrea being the total package.
“She is an outstanding tennis player, no question about it,” continues Bethlenfalvy. “Andrea is definitely one of the best I have ever coached and she also is an outstanding team leader. In addition, she is involved in her classes and has a very high grade point average; she is involved on campus and is a leader in her sorority and in her class; and she volunteers and is a member of a number of groups on campus. To me, Andrea is just the total package of what being a Division III student-athlete is all about.”
In the classroom, Isaac carries a 3.8 grade point average in special education. She is a member of the Dean’s List and Alpha Lambda Honor Society and served as the Alpha Lambda Vice President.
On campus, Isaac is a member a sorority and served as its Scholarship Chair. She was the secretary of the sophomore class two years ago, served as its secretary and was heavily involved in Homecoming 2004. Isaac also has been involved as the Student Director of the Health Promotions and Grant Board, served as a Summer Orientation and Weekend-of-Welcome leader and is a member of the Public Relations Club.
“I just enjoy being active and involved and tennis is a big part of it,” said Isaac, who is currently a candidate for ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-America honors. “When I came to B-W, I wanted to be involved in tennis and on campus and I have had a great opportunity to do just that. It has been an excellent experience and I am looking forward to the rest of my junior year and all of my senior year.”
From the sounds of it, even after Isaac establishes all of the women’s tennis records at the College as a seniorthat she plans to remain active, engaging and involved for the rest of her life.
