BEREA, OHIO — Three Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball players have been tabbed to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team. Headlining the list is senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) who was named as the Mike Gregory Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Player.
For McCormick it was the end to a great career. On the basketball court, McCormick is both one of the best to ever play at B-W and in the Ohio Athletic Conference. He was an All-OAC pick for four straight years, including a first-team selection this year. McCormick was joined on the All-OAC squad by sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) as a second-team choice and senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) on the honorable mention squad.
In addition to being a first-team All-OAC pick and the Mike Gregory Award winner, McCormick was already tabbed this winter as a unanimous first-team Academic All-OAC selection and as a first-team Verizon Academic All-Distrivct IV choice. Through his Verizon honor, he will now advance to the national Verizon Academic All-America ballot.† In the classroom, McCormick is a graduate student pursuing a master’s†degree in†Business Administration (MBA) and carries a 3.75 grade point average.
McCormick ended his career as the third all-time leading scorer in B-W history with 1,865 career points to go with 515 rebounds. He has led B-W in scoring for three straight years, is a four-time all-tournament team pick and a four-time OAC Player of the Week during his career (once each year). This winter, he topped the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 20.0 points per game, was second in rebounding with 4.9 rpg. and first with 49 three-pointers, 50 steals and shot 85.9 percent from the foul line.†As a freshman, McCormick also was named to the d3hoops.com All-Freshman team. In addition to taking MBA classes and being a standout on the basketball court, McCormick currently workds a 40-hour-a-week job as a Loan Officer at Huntington Bank in downtown Berea.
Davis, a computer information and computer science major,has been one of the top inside players in the OAC the past two years. This year, Davis established himself as a dominant force by averaging 16.9 points and a team-leading 8.3 rebounds per game. He also led the team in blocked shots with 40 and canned 56.6 percent of his field goals. After two years, Davis has already scored 847 career points, grabbed 382 rebounds, blocked 84 shots and shoots 55.6 percent from the floor.
In addition to being named All-OAC for the first time in his career, Carroll, a three-time Academic All-OAC player, including a unanimous first-team choice this winter, was also tabbed as a second-team Verizon Academic All-District IV. In the classroom, Carroll carries a better than 3.5 grade point average in business administration and sport management.† He is a two-time Academic All-OAC player who has scored 1,096 career points to rank 21st all-time at B-W.† Earlier this season, Carroll was tabbed as an OAC Player of the Week.
Carroll is also a Dean’s List student and a member of B-W’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Currently, Carroll is doing a gameday internship with the Cleveland CAVS Public Relations Office and would like to work either in professional or collegiate athletics. This season, Carroll was third on the team in scoring at 14.2 ppg. and second in both three-pointers with 44 and assists with 111.
This winter, the Yellow Jacket men's basketball team finished 13-13 overall and had its 14th season with a .500 or better record in the last 15 years. In addition to Shawn McCormick being the OAC Men's Player of the Year, another highlight was veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson winning the 600th game of his illustrious coaching career.
