Baldwin-Wallace College Junior Dan Larlham Seeks to be Among the B-W QB Greats

By Sports Information Summer Intern Jeff Hoedt

larlhamhead.jpgBEREA, OHIO -- Junior quarterback Dan Larlham is no stranger to success.

His success goes back to his high school playing days where, as a senior, he rushed for 1,900 yards and 22 touchdowns.  He also threw for 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Larlham then brought that success as a football player to Baldwin-Wallace.  In only two years playing on the varsity football team, Larlham has thrown for a total of 3,143 yards and 25 touchdowns.  During his freshman year after transfering to B-W from Big Ten football power Michigan State, Larlham took over for senior quarterback Kenny Leonard who broke his collarbone and was lost for the rest of the season. Larlham then made the best of his opportunity by passing for over 200 yards in three of the seven games he started.  He finished his first year of Yellow Jacket football with 1,370 passing yards and nine touchdowns. He also showed opponents his threat as a ball carrier by rushing for seven touchdowns.

Along the way during his first season, he received the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Week, Shriners/Al Koran Temple Player of the Game and Yellow Jacket Offensive player of the week for his performance against Muskingum in which he completed 17 of 21 passes for 264 yards and three TDs.  larlhamrun.jpg

On the field, Larlham has shown that not only is he a gifted passer and runner, he also shows great leadership qualities on the field.

"Dan is a great competitor," said head coach John Snell.  "Leaders must be competitors and he is one of the best competitors in the program."

As a sophomore, Larlham continued his success on the playing field.  He started all ten games and led the Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 overall record and their 35th consecutive winning season.  Larlham passed for 1,773 yards and 16 TDs along with 371 rushing yards and seven TDs.

"When I am done playing football, I’d like people to remember me as one of the best quarterbacks who led his team to an OAC Championship," said Larlham.  "I want people to believe that I lead through example."

One of his more impressive games during his sophomore season came against OAC rival Capital University.  During the game, Larlham fell nine yards shy of a 300 yard passing game in what turned out to be a quarterback dual between him and Capital QB Dan Bartholomew who threw for 305 yards and three TDs.

"I still need to become more comfortable in tough game situations." said Larlham.

However, throughout Larlham's two years as a Yellow Jacket quarterback, Coach Snell has seen a significant improvement.

"He has improved in the mental aspects of the game, and he has developed a very good understanding of our offense," said Snell.

In 2002, the Yellow Jackets will look to improve with the start of a new era in a new head coach.  Coach John Snell who is taking over for legendary B-W coach Bob Packard, will have a good group to begin his career as head coach.

"I had a great experience playing for Coach Packard and I am looking forward to the new season with Coach Snell," said Larlham.  "Coach Snell brings a new level of excitement to the team as there is when any new coach takes over."

With returning leaders such as Dan Larlham, the Yellow Jackets will be looking for their 36th consecutive winning season and quite possibly an OAC Championship and berth into the national playoffs.
