BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College senior women's swimmer Megan Calvey (Brooklyn Heights H.S.) has been chosen as the STARR Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of January.
The STARR of the Month program stands for Students Taking Active Responsible Roles. The program was developed in conjunction with two NCAA-related programs: CHAMPS/Life Skills and the STARR pilot program of which Baldwin-Wallace is one of eight NCAA Division III grant recieving recipients. The STARR of the Month Program recognizes exceptional student-athletes who are showing a great balance between athletic, academic, personal, service, leadership and other involvement.
Calvey is a business administration major with an emphasis in accounting. She also has a minor in speech comunications and will also graduate from the honors program. She plans to start her career as an auditor at Grant Thornton, an accounting firm in downtown Cleveland.
In swimming, Calvey is a three-year letter winner and a team captain. She competes primarily in the freestyle and butterfly events. She has season-bests of 1:11.12 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:45.18 in the-200-yard butterfly.
A year ago at the 2002 OAC Championship Meet, Calvey helped B-W to win its first-ever swim title by a men's or women's team. Individually, she finished in 10th place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.50) and 11th in the 200 fly (2:44.19). In addition, Calvey finished 16th in the 1650-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 21:20.54. For her efforts in the classroom and in swimming, Calvey was named to the Academic All-OAC squad and helped the B-W swim team acheive Academic All-America status.
At B-W, Calvey is involved with many different organizations on campus. Last year, she was a regional presenter for Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). She currently serves on the Panhellenic Council as the treasurer and is highly involved with her sorority. In the past, Calvey served on both the executive boards of her sorority and Newman Student Organization.
Calvey is the daughter of Maureen Rudd and Tim Calvey of Brooklyn Heights.
